Lunar Eclipse during October 2004:

October 27th28th, 2004:
A total eclipse of the Moon, centered on 3:04 UT, will be visible for skywatchers in Europe and western Africa (during the morning of the 28th) and for observers in much of North America and all of South America (late in the evening of the 27th). Totality lasts 81 minutes. Much of Asia and Africa will see the eclipsed Moon setting; the Moon will rise in eclipse for observers in Alaska and on the west coast of North America.

Visibility of the Total Lunar Eclipse of October 27-28, 2004
http://sunearth.gsfc.nasa.gov/eclipse/LEmono/TLE2004Oct28/TLE2004Oct28.html

October's lunar eclipse is well-placed for North and South America as well as western Europe and Africa. From the United States, the eastern two-thirds of the country will see the entire eclipse (weather permitting). In the western third of the USA, the faint penumbral phase begins before moonrise but this is the least interesting and dramatic part of the eclipse. The more important and photogenic partial and total phases will be visible from all of North America with the exception of Alaska. From the Alaskan panhandle, the partial phases begin at moonrise, but further west the Moon will rise during totality.

Canada also witnesses the entire eclipse as does Central and South America. From western Europe, the eclipse occurs during the early morning hours of Wednesday, October 28. The Moon sets during totality from East Africa, the Middle East and central Asia. India and western China will only see the early penumbral stages before the Moon sets. Further east, none of the eclipse is visible from Japan, eastern China, southeast Asia, Indonesia, Australia or New Zealand.

The major phases of the eclipse occur as follows (all times are GMT or Greenwich Mean Time). The partial eclipse commences with first umbral contact at 01:14am GMT. Totality begins at 02:23am GMT and lasts until 03:45am GMT. The partial phases end at 04:54am GMT.

Use the US Navy's eclipse computer to get your time and place:

Chandra Grahana ( Lunar Eclipse )
For healthy (not pregnant) persons who can perform austerity it is mentioned that the complete time period of GRAHANA is well known as "Punyakala" in Shastras. Any Satkarma done in this period of ' GRAHANA PUNYAKALA'  yields Sahasra Phala (a thousand times the fruits). Ganga and all holy rivers' will have their Sannidhana in all waters everywhere, so bathing is recomended.  One  who bathes in this time will have Punya of Pavitra Snana of all the holy rivers.  So the Snana should be done at the beginning and end of GRAHANA (not during).  During, this is the auspicious time to do Japa and Stotra Parayana ( Vishnusahasranama etc).

This Grahana will happen in Ashwini Nakshatra Mesha Rashi.  Grahana Dosha will affect Mesha, Meena, Vrishabha, Kanya and Vrishchika Rashis of  Ashvini, Bharani, Krittika, Rohini, MrigaShira, Uttara, Hasta, Chitra, Vishakha, Anuradha, Jyeshtha, Poorvabhadra, Uttarabhadra and Revathi Nakshatras.  For the negation of this effect we can do Dana of Toor Daal with Jaggery, Darshana of the Lord, Pradakshina Namaskara, Vishnu SahasraNama Parayana, or chanting Japa. (from the notes of Yogeendra Bhat. 21 Oct 2004 )

Pregnant women are advised to stay out of the inauspicious rays of the eclipse, see more on this at the eclipse page.

                               TRANSLATION

Now I am confused about my duty and have lost all composure because
of miserly weakness. In this condition I am asking You to tell me
for certain what is best for me. Now I am Your disciple, and a soul
surrendered unto You. Please instruct me.

PURPORT by HDG Srila A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada:

By nature's own way the complete system of material activities is a
source of perplexity for everyone. In every step there is
perplexity, and therefore it behooves one to approach a bona fide
spiritual master who can give one proper guidance for executing the
purpose of life. All Vedic literatures advise us to approach a bona
fide spiritual master to get free from the perplexities of life,
which happen without our desire. They are like a forest fire that
somehow blazes without being set by anyone. Similarly, the world
situation is such' that perplexities of life automatically appear,
without our wanting such confusion. No one wants fire, and yet it
takes place, and we become perplexed. The Vedic wisdom therefore
advises that in order to solve the perplexities of life and to
understand the science of the solution, one must approach a
spiritual master who is in the disciplic succession. A person with
a bona fide spiritual master is supposed to know everything. One
should not, therefore, remain in material perplexities but should
approach a spiritual master. This is the purport of this verse.

Who is the man in material perplexities? It is he who does not
understand the problems of life. In the Brhad-aranyaka Upanisad
(3.8.10) the perplexed man is described as follows: yo va etad
aksaram gargy aviditvasmal lokat praiti sa krpanah. He is a
miserly man who does not solve the problems of life as a human and
who thus quits this world like the cats and dogs, without
understanding the science of self-realization. This human form of
life is a most valuable asset for the living entity who can utilize
it for solving the problems of life; therefore, one who does not
utilize this opportunity properly is a miser. On the other hand,
there is the brahmana, or he who is intelligent enough to utilize
this body to solve all the problems of life. Ya etad aksaram gargi
   viditvasmal lokat praiti sa brahmanah.

The krpanas, or miserly persons, waste their time in being overly
affectionate for family, society, country, etc., in the material
conception of life. One is often attached to family life, namely to
wife, children and other members, on the basis of skin disease.
The krpana thinks that he is able to protect his family members
from death; or the krpana thinks that his family or society can
save him from the verge of death. Such family attachment can be
found even in the lower animals, who take care of children also.
Being intelligent, Arjuna could understand that his affection for
family members and his wish to protect them from death were the
causes of his perplexities. Although he could understand that his
duty to fight was awaiting him, still, on account of miserly
weakness, he could not discharge the duties. He is therefore asking
Lord Krsna, the supreme spiritual master, to make a definite
solution. He offers himself to Krsna as a disciple. He wants to
stop friendly talks. Talks between the master and the disciple are
serious, and now Arjuna wants to talk very seriously before the
recognized spiritual master. Krsna is therefore the original
spiritual master of the science of Bhagavad-gita, and Arjuna is the
first disciple for understanding the Gita. How Arjuna understands
the Bhagavad-gita is stated in the Gita itself. And yet foolish
mundane scholars explain that one need not submit to Krsna as a
person, but to the unborn within Krsna. There is no difference
between Krsna's within and without. And one who has no sense of
this understanding is the greatest fool in trying to understand
   Bhagavad-gita.

Prabhupada Uvacha:
(here's some nectar, sometimes it comes in the form of Srutakirti prabhu's diary, other times from Govinda dasi's diary, or sometimes from a letter, but still nectar...)

Little Drops of Nectar

Once at a lecture in the temple room in Los Angeles in 1970, just after moving into the building, Srila Prabhupada asked the assembled devotees, "Is anyone not chanting sixteen rounds?" Only one boy raised his hand. It was Bhakta dasa. Prabhupada said, "You are not finishing sixteen rounds?"
"Well, Srila Prabhupada," he said, "I've been working until late at night and only sleeping four hours, so I haven't had time to finish."
Srila Prabhupada replied strongly, "Then sleep only two hours, but you must finish sixteen rounds a day."

While staying in Sydney, Srila Prabhupada held an initiation and sacrifice in the backyard. The devotees then brought Srila Prabhupada the Deities' maha-prasadam. He looked at the plate and picked out one puri. He smelled it, poked it with his fingers, and then tasted it. "This puri is the best puri," he said. "It is perfect. Bring me the man who has cooked this puri."
The devotees ran off and found the fortunate cook, Kurma dasa. They brought him before Prabhupada, who said, "Thank you very much for following the rules and regulations. I can understand that to cook such a puri you are following all the rules nicely." Prabhupada explained that that was the way to do things properly -- to follow, to be strict.
"I don't like second-class things," he said. "I like first-class puris." Every day while in Sydney, Prabhupada used to have Kurma's first-class puris and he liked them very much indeed.

"If I were to have a son, should I train him to do my work?" Bharadvaja asked Srila Prabhupada.
At that time Bharadvaja was in charge of the FATE studio, making diorama sculptures of krsna-lila. He had also seen in India how children are taught their father's work at a very young age so that they become proficient.
Srila Prabhupada replied, "You are not a potter. Tomorrow you may be called to worship the Deity."
In this way, Srila Prabhupada taught us to be attached only to the order of the spiritual master, not to any concept of oneself as an artist or pujari.

" Material Infection-Forgetting Krsna "

Prabhupada:

...uthaya, kabhu narake dubaya
dandya-jane raja yena nadite cubaya

So Lord Caitanya is explaining the position of the conditioned souls. They are completely under the grip of this material nature. And just like one is seated on the car and the driver drives him -- if the driver is not under control, he drives him anywhere, to any hell -- similarly, we are sitting on this car of this body, supplied by the material nature, and she is driving anywhere, sometimes up, sometimes down. In this way we are suffering life after life, birth after birth. This is our condition. We are not independent; completely under the stringent laws of material nature.

So dandya-jane raja yena nadite cubaya. The example is very nice, that a culprit is drowned in the water, again taken for some time to take breathing. He was suffocating. Nature... He's not meant to be killed, but he is to be given suffering in that way. So material nature is giving us suffering, miseries like that. Bhayam dvitiya.

(bhayam) dvitiyabhinivesatah syad
isad apetasya viparyayo 'smrtih
tan-mayayato budha abhajet tam
bhaktyaikayesam guru-devatatma

Therefore Bhagavata, Srimad-Bhagavata, is giving direction, bhayam dvitiyabhinivesatah syat. When we are forgetful of Krsna consciousness, when we think that "There is no God. This matter is everything. This material manifestation which we see, that is everything all in all, and there is no Lord, no, I mean to say, supreme controller," when we think like that, that begins, that is the point of our anxiety, beginning of anxiety. Bhayam, fearfulness. We are all fearful because, as we have got these bodily necessities, we want to eat something, we want to sleep, similarly, we have fear, and we have demand for mating. These four principles are animal life. We are always fearful. And why we are fearful? Because we have taken it that there is no God. There is no God; therefore we are fearful. Just like a forlorn child, when he thinks that "My... I am... My father and my mother, lost." You might have experienced. A child lost, he cries. He thinks himself, "I am helpless. Where is my mother? Where is my...?" Similarly, when we are helpless, we are fearful. And those who are Krsna conscious, they are not helpless. They know, "Above me, there is Krsna." And saranagati, surrender, means to have firm conviction that "Krsna will protect me. I am engaged in Krsna's service, so Krsna will give me protection." If I work in some ordinary man's service, he gives me protection. Don't you think if you work for Krsna, He'll not give you protection? Because we have no faith, therefore we are seeking protection from elsewhere. Krsna is able. He says, aham tvam sarva-papebhyo moksayisyami: [Bg. 18.66] "I shall give you protection from all sinful reactions."

But we have no faith. We are thinking, "Oh, it is written in the Bhagavad-gita. That's all right, but I must have my protection in a different way." So dvitiyabhinivesatah. Because he thinks there is anything superior than Krsna, therefore he is fearful. Why a conditioned soul is fearful, that is explained in the Bhagavata. Bhayam dvitiyabhinivesatah syat. So this maya, the illusion, when we take shelter of this illusion, then we are afraid. And when we understand that "Illusion, this energy, is under the control of Krsna, because illusion, this material energy, is also Krsna's energy, inferior energy. So even if I, I am within this material energy, when I am forgetful of Krsna, this material energy is fearful for me, and when I am in Krsna consciousness fully, there is no question of fearfulness from material nature." Therefore tan-mayaya abhajet tam. Abhajet tam. And therefore it is our duty to regain our lost consciousness, Krsna consciousness. That is the duty of this human form of life. Abhajet tam bhaktyaika isam. Simply by devotional... If you want to worship the Supreme Lord, then you have to worship Him simply by service. There is no other process. You cannot worship Krsna by this controlling breathing or by mental speculation or by some pious activities or by charities. You have simply to worship Him simply by your devotional love. That is the only way. Bhaktyai, bhaktyaika, only one, bhakti. There is no other means. There is no second means to understand God without this devotional service. Rest assured. Foolish creatures, they take this, that. They do not understand. They come to the, that impersonal, void, all the nonsensical conclusions and... Because they do not take shelter of this, devotion, therefore they cannot have any conclusion. It is not possible. Therefore, more or less, they become atheists or after the voidness or impersonalism, and so many things there are. They create

SRILA PRABHUPADA'S QUOTE OF THE DAY

Maya is on the back side of Krsna and if we keep
ourselves always in front side of Krsna, engaged
in his service, then the external energy on the
back side of Krsna will not be able to attack us.

Quotes from Shastra - scriptures

Kartika mahatmya from 16th chapter Hari Bhakti Vilasa

All manner of inspiring nectar regarding Kartika vrat - what to do

"To feel separation from the Spiritual Master or Krishna is very good position. That means one who is in pure love with Krishna and His Representative, Spiritual Master, he thinks always of Them. And this thinking process is Krishna consciousness. If we can think always of Krishna even in separation, that is Krishna Consciousness. And in the absolute platform, there is no difference of separation and meeting. The separation is also meeting, rather in separation one relishes the loving relationship more tasty. So don't be disappointed that you are separated from me, I am always thinking of you how you are making progress there."

(Srila Prabhupada letter, October 21, 1968)

740928SB.MAY                 Lectures
That is the desire of Krsna, or God, that the state executive head should be as pious as Maharaja Yudhisthira. That is the scheme. Unfortunately, people do not want that. They have now discovered this democracy. Democracy... "Demon-cracy." Shortcut of "demon-cracy" is "democracy." All the demons and rogues, they gather together, somehow or other votes, and occupy the seat, and the business is plundering. The business is plundering. If we talk very much upon this, it will not be very favorable, but according to sastra... We, we talk according to sastra, that the democracy means assembly of rogues and plunderers. That is the statement in the Srimad-Bhagavatam. Dasyu-dharmabhih. The government men will be all dasyu. Dasyu means plunderer. Not pickpocket. Pickpocket, somehow or other, if you do not understand, takes something from your pocket, and the plunderer, or the dasyu, he catches you and by force, "If you don't spare your money, I shall kill you." They are called dasyu.
So the, in the present age of Kali, the government men will be dasyu. This is stated in the Srimad-Bhagavatam. Dasyu-dharmabhih. You can, we can see practically. You cannot keep your money. You earn with hard labor, but you cannot keep gold, you cannot keep jewelry, you cannot keep money. And... They will take it away by laws. So they make law that... Yudhisthira Maharaja was just quite opposite. He wanted to see that every citizen is so happy that they are not troubled even by excessive heat and excessive cold. Ati-vyadhi. They are not suffering from any disease, they are not suffering from excessive climatic influence, eating very nicely, and feeling security of person and property. That was Yudhisthira Maharaja. Not only Yudhisthira Maharaja. Almost all the kings, they were like that.

Always Remain Srila Prabhupada's Dog

Almost every morning in Bombay Srila Prabhupada used to walk on Juhu Beach. One morning I had been feeling especially wretched and miserable. Although so many other devotees were present, Srila Prabhupada began to speak as if he were addressing me personally.
He quoted a Sanskrit verse and said there are two words - a-natha and sa-natha. Natha means "master," so a-natha means "without master" and sa-natha means "with master." The whole goal of life is to become sa-natha,"with master."
In the morning on Juhu Beach many gentlemen used to walk their dogs. Srila Prabhupada pointed to a fat and fit gentleman walking with an equally fat and fit dog. The man was walking briskly and confidently with his dog on his leash, and the dog was walking equally briskly and confidently with his master by his side. Srila Prabhupada commented that every dog wants a good master. If the dog has a good master he is happy. He holds his head high, he wags his tail. He knows that his master will maintain and protect him, so he has no anxiety.
But the street dog. "The poor fellow has no master. Therefore he is always suffering." Srila Prabhupada then pointed to some stray dogs. "They have no master. They do not know where they will sleep, how they will get food. Other dogs bark at them; children throw stones at them. They are always in anxiety."
Srila Prabhupada stopped walking. He planted his cane firmly in the sand of Juhu Beach. Although I stood behind many of the devotees who moved close around him, with his eyes laden with love and compassion he looked in my eyes. "So we should be sanatha, protected, and not anatha - orphan. We should have our master and be exclusively devoted to him. Then we will feel confident in his protection and always be happy."
Quoting the verse again, Srila Prabhupada explained each Sanskrit word. Mano-Remembering Srila Prabhupada - .ems ratha: the chariot of the mind. Mental concoction is driving us here, there, here, there. We have no peace. But when we have our perfect master to serve, we become peaceful, prasanta, and jubilant that, "I have got my master. I have no cares and anxiety." This is the ideal of life, to become sanatha-Jivitam, living with hope that "I have got my master who will give me protection."
I knew that Srila Prabhupada was speaking directly to me, addressing my present need in Krsna consciousness. Without my even asking or saying anything, he knew my heart and gave the perfect solution through his instructions.
Thereafter, I always tried to remember and follow these instructions of Srila Prabhupada's.
Although I had caught some of the words from the verse and Srila Prabhupada's explanation, I very much wanted to find the verse - but could not. Then several years later I came across the same verse quoted in Sri Caitanya caritamrta (Madhya1.206):

bhavantam evanucaram nirantarah
prasanta-nihsesa-mano-rathantarah
kadaham aikantika-nitya-knikarah
praharsayisyami sanatha-jivitam

"By serving You constantly, one is freed from all material desires and is completely pacified. When shall I engage as your permanent eternal servant and always feel joyful to have such a fitting master?"
Reading the purport, I found the same instructions Srila Prabhupada had given on Juhu Beach: "Just as a dog or servant is very satisfied to get a competent, perfect master, or as a child is completely satisfied to possess a competent father, so the living entity is satisfied by completely engaging in the service of the Supreme Lord. He thereby knows that he has a competent master to save him from all kinds of danger."
I realized that Srila Prabhupada is so perfect that he always spoke on the basis of scriptures. At the same time, because of his tremendous compassion and humility, he could say just the right thing in the right way to deeply touch the heart of the listener.
Now whenever I walk on Juhu Beach anRemembering Srila Prabhupada - .ems d see the different types of dogs - those with masters and those without - I remember Srila Prabhupada's instructions and pray that I will always remain Srila Prabhupada's dog.

"You should know that if somehow or other you have the good fortune of developing love for a devotee, then you will certainly be accepted by Krishna. In fact Krishna will accept you more intimately than if you try to love Him directly. The greatest fortune, the greatest achievement in this entire existence is to somehow or other have the association or contact with those devotees who has received the mercy of the Lord because that is the way in which the Lord's mercy is attainable."

H H Radhanath Swami Maharaj

"There is nothing new to be said. Whatever I had to say, I have already said in my books. Now you must all try to understand it and continue with your endeavors. Whether I am present or not present doesn't matter. Just as Krsna is living eternally, the living being also lives eternally. But especially... kirtir yasya sa jivati: 'One who has done service to the Lord lives forever.' You have been taught to serve Krsna, and with Krsna we'll live eternally. Our life is eternal. Na hanyate hanyamane sarire: the disappearance of the temporary body doesn't matter. The body is meant for disappearance. So, live forever by serving Krsna. Thank you very much."

"IN EVERY TOWN AND VILLAGE the chanting of the Holy Name of Krishna shall be heard. This was the forecast made by Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu almost 500 years ago in India. Today, as the Hare Krishna Mantra -- Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare, Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare -- resounds in Bombay and New York, Nairobi and Sydney, and in Paris and Hong Kong, the prophecy of Lord Caitanya stands fulfilled. The universal import of this "Samkirtan Movement" (the congregational chanting of the Holy Names of the Lord) was expressed by Lord Caitanya as follows:

"Glory to the Sri Krishna Samkirtan which cleanses the heart of all the dust accumulated for years together. Thus the fire of conditional life, of repeated birth and death, is extinguished. The Samkirtan Movement is the prime benediction for humanity at large because it spreads the rays of the benediction Moon. It is the life of all transcendental knowledge, it increases the ocean of transcendental bliss, and it helps us to have a taste of the full nectar for which we are always anxious."

Agama Tantra and the Vaishnava Samskaras as a way of life:

Recently I was asked, "Don't you find it an inconvenience to always be checking to see when is the right time to do this or the best time for that?"

In simple terms my answer was and still is; if you go to the bus or railway station or airport it is probably an intelligent venture to enquire about the times and routes of vehicles than to just hope that one will be along soon, or one is going in your direction.

There are subtle influences in the Universe that, for thousands of years gone by, advanced cultures have honoured, respected and utilised. Before the corruption of the Vedik literatures by the Christian and Moslem invaders to India all these things were used; Ayurvedik Medicine; Vedik Astrology; etc. Today there's a rennaisance among many to revive these arts.

We have been trained and studied to be able to provide these services. See some of my sites:

"The religious principles taught by Mohammed and Jesus Christ are similar to the religious principles taught by Vaishnava sects. Buddhism and Jainism are similar to Saiva-dharma. This is scientific consideration of truths regarding religious principles. Those who consider their own religious principles as real dharma and others religious principles as irreligion or subreligion are unable to ascertain the truth due to being influenced by prejudice. Actually religious principles followed by people in general are different only due to the different qualifications of the practitioners, but the constitutional religious principles of all living entities are one." Dear Fellow Vegetarians,
As you'd know WVD is very close and in these troubled times I'd like to invite you all to share with us a mood of mutual co-operation in getting our message across to the world. For those who are not vegetarian it is an opportune time for us to reach them especially given the present climate. In the words of George Bernard Shaw:

We are living graves of murdered beasts
Slaughtered to satisfy our appetites.
We never pause to wonder at our feasts,
If animals like men could possibly have rights.

We pray on Sunday that we may have light,
To guide our footsteps on the paths we tread.
We are sick of war, we do not want to fight,
And we gorge ourselves upon the dead.

Like Carrion Crows we live and feed on meat,
Regardless of the suffering and pain
We cause by doing so, in this we treat,
Defenceless animals for sport or gain -

How can we hope in this world to attain
The peace we say we are so anxious for,
We pray for it o'er hetacomba of slain,
To God while outraging the moral law,
Thus cruelty begets the offspring --- WAR !

Congressional Resolution Introduced to Recognize Deepavali
http://www.hinduamericanfoundation.org

USA, October 5, 2004: The Hindu American Foundation announced today that a resolution recognizing the historical and cultural significance of the Hindu festival of Diwali was submitted to the United States House of Representatives, Committee on Government Reform, on October 5,  2004. House Resolution 816 was introduced by Rep. Joseph Crowley (D, NY), Democratic Chair of the Congressional Caucus on India and Indian Americans, and was authored with assistance from the Hindu American Foundation (HAF) ("source").

"I am pleased to have introduced this resolution recognizing Diwali," said Representative Joseph Crowley (D, NY) Democratic Chair of the Congressional Caucus on India and Indian Americans as he introduced the first resolution recognizing a festival of religious significance to most Indian Americans. "Diwali is an important day for Indian Americans and Indians around the world and I am proud to be the sponsor of this resolution," Rep. Crowley continued.

"Diwali is of immense significance to Hindu Americans, and this resolution introduced by Congressman Crowley captures the essence of its spiritual and historical importance to Hindus, Jains and Sikhs," said Aseem Shukla, M.D., Member of the HAF Board of Directors.

The Hindu American Foundation, that had hosted a reception on Capitol Hill, and met with several congressmen to discuss issues of concern to Hindu Americans, approached contacts made during those visits to consider official congressional recognition of Diwali. With official assent, HAF proceeded to provide a draft of such a resolution. "When the co-chairs of the India caucus, Reps. Crowley and Wilson, agreed to work with HAF to finalize a resolution on Diwali, we quickly grasped this unique opportunity to garner official recognition for this most widely celebrated festival. We have enjoyed an excellent working relationship with many congressional offices, and we hope to utilize these contacts to gain widespread support for this resolution," said Sheetal Shah, coordinator of the HAF Government Interaction Project.

The resolution effort was the latest in a series of actions by HAF to fulfill stated goals to further understanding of Hinduism and promote the religion's tenets of tolerance and pluralism. Mihir Meghani, M.D., President of HAF, explained that the resolution was aimed at promoting awareness of the growing Hindu American community and imparting an official recognition to one of their most important festivals. "This will not only be the first time Hindus and all Indian Americans are felicitated on Diwali, but in a sense, this resolution is a first step in bringing Diwali into our nation's mainstream." said Mihir Meghani, M.D., President of HAF. "Congressman Crowley has once again demonstrated his sincere commitment to Hindu American issues by introducing this resolution," Dr. Meghani added.

The resolution reads:
House Resolution 816 IH, 108th Congress, 2nd Session, "Recognizing the holiday of Diwali."

IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES, October 4, 2004

Mr. CROWLEY submitted the following resolution; which was referred to the Committee on Government Reform

RESOLUTION
Recognizing the holiday of Diwali.

Whereas Diwali is an annual festival celebrated by many South Asians and is particularly significant to Hindus, Sikhs, and Jains;

Whereas for nearly 2,000,000 Indian Americans, Diwali is a time for thanksgiving, and prayer, for health, knowledge, and peace;

Whereas Diwali falls on the last day of the last month in the lunar calendar and is celebrated as the beginning of the New Year by Hindus and Jains;

Whereas the word 'Diwali' is a version of the Sanskrit word 'Deepavali,' which means a row of lamps;

Whereas Diwali is a festival of lights, celebrated in part by the lighting and display of small oil lamps throughout the home and the community;

Whereas Hindu celebrants of Diwali believe that the rows of lamps symbolize the light within the individual that rids the soul of the darkness of ignorance;

Whereas for Hindus, Diwali is a celebration of the return of god following the vanquishing of demonic forces;

Whereas for Sikhs, Diwali is feted as the day on which the 6th founding Sikh guru, Guru Hargobind, was released from captivity by the Mughal Emperor Jehangir;

Whereas for Jains, Diwali marks the anniversary of the attainment of Nirvana by Lord Mahavira, the last of the Tirthankaras (founders of the Jain philosophy); and

Whereas Diwali is a celebration of great importance in Indian-American communities throughout the United States: Now, therefore, be it

Resolved, That the House of Representatives--
(1) recognizes the historical and cultural significance of Diwali; and

(2) requests that the President issue a proclamation recognizing Diwali.

HPI adds: The resolution has been proposed by Mr. Crowley and referred to a committee. It has to pass through the committee before being voted on in the House.

Hinduism Bids To Win Back Skeptical Youth
http://allafrica.com/stories/200410040382.html

JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA, October 3, 2004: Community leaders are fighting to revive Hindu custom and tradition to preserve a culture they fear is dying among the youth. Their efforts come as the younger generation begins to question the relevance and meaning of Hindu rituals. The decline in Hindu culture is blamed on the rising influence of Western culture, apartheid's education legacy--which neglected Hindu teachings--and a more skeptical youth, says this article. "Owing to apartheid, children were subjected to Christian national education and, as a result, children and many adults became ashamed of their cultural roots and religious heritage," said Ram Maharaj, president of the Hindu Dharma Sabha of South Africa. "Given the impact of Eurocentric education and the imposition of Western values, a large number of the youth and adults started aping Western culture and discarded their rich Eastern values." Durban architect Prinola Pillay, 25, said: "We just follow our parents and do as we are told. But I don't think our parents fully understand why a certain ritual is done or why a period is considered auspicious." She said children were more fluent at reciting Bible stories than Hindu tales. "Since the advent of democracy, children have been taught to read and write in Tamil, Hindi and Gujarati, but they are not taught about their culture, and that's where the problem lies." Gurukal Muthuiyer Radhakrishna of the Umgeni Road Temple said religious leaders and clergy had to simplify Hinduism for younger people. "They need to uncomplicate it and make the youth understand that there is much to gain through religion. They also need to be involved in the prayers, and that way you attract more of the youth. The younger generation are showing an interest. They just need the guidance," he said.

UK River Approved For Ash Scattering - It's Hindu can do on England's Ganges
http://www.smh.com.au/articles/2004/10/10/1097406424001.html?

LEICESTER, ENGLAND, October 11, 2004: There are no temples or funeral pyres on its banks, but the River Soar in Leicestershire has been approved as an alternative holy site to India's Ganges for Hindu funerals. After requests from the Asian community of 250,000, the Environment Agency has approved ceremonies in which the ashes of dead Hindus and Sikhs are scattered across the water. A boat hire company has also been authorized to provide a fully customized service for the funerals, which are increasing in demand in the English Midlands. Last week Shastriji Prakashbhai Pandya, a Hindu priest who officiates at the ceremonies, said the Soar was an acceptable alternative. "When I close my eyes, this could be the Ganges." Mr. Pandya said that ceremonies on the Soar were becoming increasingly popular. "Often it is difficult for people to go to India to scatter the ashes," he said. "It is expensive, and older family members may not be able to travel. That is one reason why people are coming here. "The second reason is the Soar is greener than the Ganges, and the scenery is better. Unlike the Ganges it is quiet here, and the water is clean and clear." Narrow boats are hired for US$135 a time, and boarded by close family. The ashes are scattered with flowers, powder, a basil-type herb and holy leaves. Frank Reeves, whose company provides the boats, said: "The British weather isn't a problem. Apparently if it starts raining immediately after the ceremony that means good luck."

Dawn : Lord Krishna is awakened

At dawn Vrishabhanu-pur is very beautifuL In that peaceful atmosphere all the priya-sakhas headed by Sridama are awakened by the sound of Balaram's buffalo horn. Then the upa-sakhas (the greater assembly of cowherd boys) come together and congregate with Sridama and Sudama. After performing their morning duties they all go to the town of Nandishvar to get the darshan of Krishna. Sridama, Sudama, Dama, Subala, Bhadra-sena, Stoka-Krishna, Mahabala, Kinkini, Ujjvala, Gobhata, Arjjuna and the other cowherd boys thus travel to the headquarters of Nanda Maharaja while completely maddened with ecstatic prema. Arriving at the palace, they stand out in the courtyard and very jubilandy call, "utho! utho! kotah Krishna?" ("Get up! Get up! Where is Krishna?").

This is related tn Sri-Govinda Lilamritam (2.8):

tavad gobhata bhadrasena subala stoka krsnarjjunah
Sridhamojjvala dama kinkini sudamadyah sakhayoh grhat
 agatya tvarita mudabhimilitah siringana pranagane,
krsnotistha nijestha gostha maya bho ity ahvayantah sthitah

"At that time Krishna s boyfriends Gobhata Bhadrasena Subala Stoka Krishna Arjjuna Sridama, Ujjvala Dama Kinkini Sudama and the rest hastily arrive from their homes and joyfully meet with Sri Balarama out in the courtyard. They stand together and call "Krishna! Get up! Let's go to Your beloved cowshed! bho!"

Then these boys go along with Mother Yashoda to Krishna's sleeping chamber where He is presently reclining.

navina ghanasarabham mam pita-patavrtam
ratnapalaka madhyastham susuptam tatra cintayed

The essential complexion of a fresh raincloud the dark boy is covered with yellow sheets. Situated upon a fine jewelled bedstead- sleeping. one should meditate on Him there.
In an ornately jewelled temple. Lying upon a pleasant bedstead Nanda-Suta is fast asleep amongst the various colorful pillows. At that particular time everyone first watches Him for a while. Then His servants step forward and try to stir Him from His rest. Nanda Rani personally performs the mangala arati, after which she gives Him benedictions while offering freshly cut barley and durva grass. Yashoda calls Him to give up His rest and with a damp cloth she cleans the face of the Lord.

In this regard, there is a song by Gokula-Chandra Das as follows: (prabhati morning melody tune)

utho utho mora    nandera Nandan    prabhata hoilo rati
angane dandaya    royeche sakala    balaka tomara sathi
mukhera upari     mukhani diya      dakaye yasoda rani
koto sukha paya   ghumiacho suya    ami kichu nahi jani
nayana meliya    dekhaho cahiya     udoya hoilo bhanu
Sridama sudama    dakaye saghana    utho bhaiyya ohe kanu
anga moda diya    uthilo satvare    sundara yadava raya
mukha praksaliya  gokula candrahi   jala jhari loya jay

"Get up! Get up my Nanda-Nandan! The night is over, and morning is here! Out in the courtyard all of your young boyfriends are standing and waiting for you!
Thus Yashoda Rani exclaims to Him while applying a washcloth to His face "How much happiness you get by thus sleeping and lying about- I cannot understand a bit! Open up Your eyes and see - the sun has arisen!"
Sridama and Sudama are also calling very loudly- "utho bhaiya ohe Kanu!"
("Get up! dear brother! 0 Kanu!")
Finally stretching His limbs- the beautiful Yadava Rai promptly gets up- To go and wash His face. Gokula-Chandra narrates- He (krsna) picks up a waterpot and leaves."

Can Hurricanes Be Used As Weapons of Mass Destruction?

Subject: Can Hurricanes Be Used As WMDs?

What the masses of human beings all over the world have not been told is that it is possible to control and manipulate weather with a technology called "SCALER WEAPON TECHNOLOGY" These weapons have other major capabilities that are even more dangerous than atomic weapons. Scaler Weapons could literally destroy the world and it is of the utmost urgency that human beings all over the world must be told of the existence of this devastating technology!

Nikola Tesla, one of the most incredible inventors of all time, developed this SCALER TECHNOLOGY in the early 1900's. Every major technology currently being used today was invented by Tesla including alternating current, television, radio, robotics etc. etc. Tesla invented an advanced technology to provide FREE ENERGY to the planet anywhere, and mainly for this reason the "powers that be" ELIMINATED Tesla's name from history books to suppress the development of Tesla's FREE ENERGY TECHNOLOGY. Can you imagine a world, where OIL, HYDRO ELECTRIC ENERGY AND NUCLEAR ENERGY would be obsolete and no longer necessary as a major energy source? Tesla desired to give his "Free Energy" technology to the world, and for this reason his funding was cut off by Westinghouse and others, and he was never permitted to be recognized for his monumental achievements. The New World Order prefers that no one know that Tesla ever existed, so that they can withhold this incredible technology from the People!.

After Tesla died, the U.S.and Russia raced to confiscate all of Tesla's papers. In Tesla's writings and drawings was SCALER TECHNOLOGY. This amazing technology can also be used to HEAL PEOPLE FROM MANY DISEASES in a simple way. The current multi-billion dollar Medical Doctor industry and multi-billion dollar pharmaceutical industry would not be too thrilled about Tesla's technology being used to replace their "primitive" but highly profitable industries either So human bings are forced to continue to suffer from diseases that can be easily and successfully treated using Tesla's Scaler technology. Sounds too good to be true? But it is TRUE!

Scaler technology can also be used in an EVIL WAY and has the potential to cause huge amounts of damage by using weather as a Weapon of Mass Destruction. This technology EXISTS NOW {see links below}. In fact some government officials have tried in vain to get a law on the books that says that Scaler Weapons cannot be used by any Nation to manipulate weather to be used as a "WEAPON" Unfortunately the U.S., Russia, and Japan and possibly other Nations made the decision to use Scaler technology in an EVIL way, which could include using Scaler technology as a WEATHER WEAPON.

Could four hurricanes hitting Florida in one year be a large scale first in the use of this kind of "weaponry". Someone should check it out. The people must be told about this possibility so steps can be taken to prevent the use of this technology for devious reasons.

It should also be noted that this technology can be used to HELP humanity in a very major good way too.

Proof Of Vedic Culture's Global Existence
BY SRI NANDANANDANA DASA
http://www.vnn.org/world/WD0007/WD09-6084.html

USA, Jul 9 (VNN) — ANNOUNCING A BOLD NEW BOOK!! PROOF OF VEDIC CULTURE'S GLOBAL EXISTENCE

By Stephen Knapp (Sri Nandanandana dasa)

This book provides evidence which makes it clear that most religious history is not what we think it is. It lets you see the true heritage that has been suppressed for centuries. It shows that there was once a greatly advanced and ancient culture that was a global society. This was the Vedic civilization. Even today we can see its influence in any part of the world, which makes it obvious that before the world became full of distinct and separate cultures, religions, and countries, it was once united in a common brotherhood of Vedic culture, with common standards, ideals, language, and representations of God.

“The Vedic tradition of India is the parent of humanity and the original ancestor of all religions.”

No matter what we may be in regard to our present religion, society, or country, we are all descendants of that ancient, global civilization. The Vedic tradition of India is the parent of humanity and the original ancestor of all religions. Through this book you will see: * How Vedic knowledge was given to humanity by the Supreme Being.

* The history and traditional source of the Vedas and Vedic Aryan society.

* Who were the original Vedic Aryans. How Vedic society was a global influence and what shattered this world-wide society.

* Many scientific discoveries over the past several centuries are only rediscoveries of what was already known in the Vedic literature. * The origins of world language and literature are found in India and Sanskrit. How Sanskrit faded from being a global language.

* The Vedic influence and proof of its ancient existence in such countries as Britain, France, Russia, Greece, China, Japan, Egypt, Arabia, and in areas of Scandinavia, the Middle East, Africa, the South Pacific, and the Americas.

* The links between the Vedic and other ancient cultures, such as the Sumerians, Persians, Egyptians, Romans, Greeks, etc.

* How Judaism, Christianity, Islam, and Buddhism were all influenced by the Vedic tradition and still contain many Vedic elements within them.

* How many of the western holy sites, churches, and mosques were once the sites of Vedic holy places and sacred shrines.

* Uncovering the truth of India's history: Powerful evidence that shows how many mosques and Muslim buildings were once opulent Vedic temples.

* The need to recognize the real history of the world, and to protect what is left of Vedic culture, the roots of humanity.

This book is offered as an attempt to allow humanity to see more clearly its universal origins. However, this book provides enough amazing if not startling facts and evidence about the truth of world history and the ancient, global Vedic culture, that it could quite possibly cause a major shift in the way we view religious history and world traditions. This book is 360 pages, 6" x 9" trim size, with Glossary, References, and Index.

The Woodcutter

Once upon a time a very strong woodcutter asked for a job in a timber merchant, and he got it. The pay was really good and so were the work conditions. For that reason, the woodcutter was determined to do his best.

His boss gave him an axe and showed him the area where he was supposed to work. The first day, the woodcutter brought 18 trees "Congratulations," the boss said. "Go on that way!"

Very motivated for the boss' words, the woodcutter tried harder the next day, but he only could bring 15 trees. The third day he tried even harder, but he only could bring 10 trees. Day after day he was bringing less and less trees.

"I must be losing my strength", the woodcutter thought. He went to the boss and apologized, saying that he could not understand what was going on. "When was the last time you sharpened your axe?" the boss asked.

"Sharpen? I had no time to sharpen my axe. I have been very busy trying to cut trees.

Our lives are like that. We sometimes get so busy that we don't take time to "sharpen the axe." In today's world, it seems that everyone is busier than ever, but less happy than ever. Why is that? Could it be that we have forgotten how to stay sharp? There's nothing wrong with activity and hard work. But at the same time we need to learn more and sharpen our skills.

We all need time to take care of who we really are as spiritual beings, find time to chant Hare Krishna, to read, designate time for family, relax, to think and meditate, to learn and grow.

If we don't take time to sharpen the axe, we will become dull and lose our effectiveness. So start Today, Think about the ways by which you could do your job more effectively and add a lot of value to it and those around you.
