Hare Krishna. ISKCON Food for Life is working
to give assistance to those
who are suffering from this immense disaster.
Please read more on the FFL website, http://www.ffl.org.
We pray that the Lord will comfort those who are in need or who have lost loved ones.
I am sure you are all aware of the recent earthquake
off the coast of Indonesia and the subsequent Tsunami waves that have devastated
Sri Lanka, India and Africa, and have taken the lives of more than 125,000
people. The death rate is rising by the hour, and Food for Life is
responding to this disaster with all the resources we have available in
several countries involved.
We will bring you more information on our efforts
soon.
If you would like to help our relief efforts donations may be given through the web http://www.ffl.org, or the Auckland temple office can forward on your behalf, or see Iskcon Sri Lankan appeal below.

Mahakarta Dasa (Prabhupada's disciple) is the temple president
of ISKCON Sri Lanka, and he is the coordinator of this Food for life relief
program for the tsunami victims.
The program started from 31st December
2004. The Temple President has gone to Trincomalee (worst affected area)
this morning to directly supervise the program with some congregational
devotees where prasadam will be cooked and distributed to the victims,
beginning from 5000 plates per day and increasing rapidly to 20,000. We
are starting from Trincomalee and it is the worst affected area in Sri
Lanka.
The rate of prasadam distribution is now more than 30,000 per day, providing cooked meals and fresh drinking water as well as some medical aide http://www.ffl.org See other articles in this issue.
This food for life program will continue for a long period and the program will expand to the other affected areas in the country and for this your help is very much needed.
Sri Lanka was among the worst affected by the recent earthquake in Sumatra (Indonesia) and the subsequent tidal wave which has affected many countries in this region. The tide was 40ft high. In the recent news this morning, the death rate has increased to more than 25000 and many thousands are still missing. Over a million are refugees. The refugees have taken shelter in hospitals, schools and temples. Hospitals have been washed out along with the patients and doctors. To continue this, we need assistance and we have to also go to different affected areas. Another rising problem is the thousands of orphans.
His Holiness Indradyumna swami and over 45 other Iskcon devotees are now in the area feeding over 30,000 prasadam meals a day and helping to heal the disrupted lives of the orphans.
So the food for life project by ISKCON (Sri Lanka) should provide a minimum of at least ten thousand plate per day or it will be insufficient for the victims.
How to donate
100% of the donations will be given to the tsunami victims. We will also supply medical items, sleeping mats, bed sheets etc as we receive.
We need assistance from you also for this humanitarian service. Please donate generously for this cause and inform your friends to donate for this purpose. Contact us for further information.

TRANSLATION
One who restrains his senses, keeping them under full control, and fixes his consciousness upon Me, is known as a man of steady intelligence.PURPORT by HDG Srila A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupad:
That the highest conception of yoga perfection is Krsna consciousness is clearly explained in this verse. And unless one is Krsna conscious it is not at all possible to control the senses. As cited above, the great sage Durvasa Muni picked a quarrel with Maharaja Ambarisa, and Durvasa Muni unnecessarily became angry out of pride and therefore could not check his senses. On the other hand, the king, although not as powerful a yogi as the sage, but a devotee of the Lord, silently tolerated all the sage's injustices and thereby emerged victorious. The king was able to control his senses because of the following qualifications, as mentioned in the Srimad-Bhagavatam (9.4.18-20):sa vai manah krsna-padaravindayor
vacamsi vaikuntha-gunanuvarnane
karau harer mandira-marjanadisu
srutim cakaracyuta-sat-kathodaye
mukunda-lingalaya-darsane drsau
tad-bhrtya-gatra-sparse 'nga-sangamam
ghranam ca tat-pada-saroja-saurabhe
srimat-tulasya rasanam tad-arpite
padau hareh ksetra-padanusarpane
siro hrsikesa-padabhivandane
kamam ca dasye na tu kama-kamyaya
yathottamasloka-janasraya ratih"King Ambarisa fixed his mind on the lotus feet of Lord Krsna, engaged his words in describing the abode of the Lord, his hands in cleansing the temple of the Lord, his ears in hearing the pastimes of the Lord, his eyes in seeing the form of the Lord, his body in touching the body of the devotee, his nostrils in smelling the flavor of the flowers offered to the lotus feet of the Lord, his tongue in tasting the tulasi leaves offered to Him, his legs in traveling to the holy place where His temple is situated, his head in offering obeisances unto the Lord, and his desires in fulfilling the desires of the Lord... and all these qualifications made him fit to become a mat-para devotee of the Lord."
The word mat-para is most significant in this connection. How one can become mat-para is described in the life of Maharaja Ambarisa. Srila Baladeva Vidyabhusana, a great scholar and acarya in the line of the mat-para, remarks, mad-bhakti-prabhavena sarvendriya-vijaya-purvika svatma-drstih sulabheti bhavah. "The senses can be completely controlled only by the strength of devotional service to Krsna." Also, the example of fire is sometimes given: "As a blazing fire burns everything within a room, Lord Visnu, situated in the heart of the yogi, burns up all kinds of impurities." The Yoga-sutra also prescribes meditation on Visnu, and not meditation on the void. The so-called yogis who meditate on something which is not on the Visnu platform simply waste their time in a vain search after some phantasmagoria. We have to be Krsna conscious--devoted to the Personality of Godhead. This is the aim of the real yoga.

Prabhupada Uvacha:
(here's some nectar, sometimes it comes in the form of Srutakirti prabhu's
diary, other times from Govinda dasi's diary, or sometimes from a letter,
but still nectar...)
May 8
At lunch there was excessive ghee in one preparation.
Prabhupada complained not about the ghee but about the fact that there
were no chilies. He said that even when there was too much ghee, if chilies
were also eaten there was no trouble digesting the food. Prabhupada suggested
we hire a local cook to prepare food for the devotees. He said we should
avoid eating at a hotel or purchasing hotel food for our regular meal.
Remembering that chilies had been left out of
the earlier prasadam because of the cook's forgetfulness, Srila Prabhupada
pronounced that because of so much sex indulgence in our previous lives,
we had become physically and mentally zero with no brains. Our only hope
was Krsna consciousness, which was beyond any mental and physical considerations.
Public darsana hour was from five to six o'clock
in the evening. News of the arrival of His Divine Grace had already spread
throughout Rishikesh, and many persons were eager for the pure devotee's
association. About forty persons from many nations attended. Srila Prabhupada
spoke about the essence of Bhagavad-gita, "dehino 'smin yatha dehe," and
a very lively question and answer session followed, lasting half an hour.
Prabhupada was uncompromising and devastating in his replies: "You cannot
understand because you are crazy. Your compassion is as valuable as blowing
air on a boil to heal it." Everyone left in a state of amazement at the
power and purity of Krsna's representative. Many more will come tomorrow.
Prabhupada ordered that kirtana be held mornings and evenings. This was
not a hotel for eating and sleeping.

Room Conversation with M. Lallier, noted French Poet -- June
12, 1974, Paris
Listen to the entire lecture on-line:
http://prabhupadavani.org/Conversations/RAMfiles_CNV/CNV064.ram
Yogesvara: ...and Mr. Lallier has a reputation among young
literary circles in France as being a very good poet.
Prabhupada: He's good poet?
M. Lallier: No. (laughs)
Jyotirmayi: (French) Before he came, he already knew
a little Bhagavad-gita, little Vedanta. So he has a lot of questions. There's
some points, he likes very much Krsna consciousness, and some, he says
that maybe in the Vedanta philosophy is different things.
M. Lallier: She says that I knew that entire philosophy,
but I knew it very badly, very... I'm not a great philosopher. No, not
at all.
Prabhupada: Which philosophy?
Yogesvara: What kind of philosophy are you familiar with?
M. Lallier: Oh, I'm very interested by Indian philosophy,
and I think it's the most high, the higher, the highest philosophy. But
it's difficult to understand for us.
Yogesvara: He says he thinks that Indian philosophy is
the highest in the world, but he finds it difficult to understand.
Prabhupada: Hmm. You call Bhagavan. We are talking of
philosophy. Then let them hear.
Prthu Putra: He said it is very hard to applicate this
spiritual philosophy in our modern world.
Prabhupada: Call Karandhara also. You also hear the philosophy.
So what is that philosophy?
Nitai: He's talking about the Vedanta philosophy, that
he is studying, but... He thinks it's the highest, but he finds it very
hard to understand and apply.
Prabhupada: So which part he finds very, very hard to
understand?
M. Lallier: I think the relation between the, the, the
body, material body and the atma...
Yogesvara: The soul?
M. Lallier: The soul, soul. The relation between the
two parts...
Bhagavan: To apply the fact that the soul exists and
the body exists? How to practically apply that difference between the body
and the soul?
M. Lallier: Yes.
Bhagavan: Is that what you...?
M. Lallier: And the relation between the two parts, between
body and soul.
Bhagavan: In other words, you recognize that there's
difference between body and soul, and how to practically apply it?
M. Lallier: I think, perhaps, there is some peoples for
whom there is no difference between the soul and body.
Prabhupada: Who says?
M. Lallier: Oh, spiritual masters.
Prabhupada: Who's that spiritual master, says soul and
the...
M. Lallier: Oh, I don't know very... I think you are
one of them. Or...?
Prabhupada: No, we don't say. We say spirit soul is different
from the body. Just like you are living, staying in this room. The room
and you are two separate things. Because you are staying in the room, it
does not mean you are room, or the room is your self. Does it mean?
M. Lallier: Yes.
Prabhupada: It means so? Because you are staying in this
room, you are this room?
M. Lallier: No. But... No, I... I understand that...
There is some difficulties for me about the signification of two Sanskrit
words which are purusa and prakrti. Is there any relation between those
two, those two...?
Prabhupada: Yes. Purusa means the enjoyer, and prakrti
means the enjoyed.
Bhagavan: Can you understand English?
M. Lallier: No. (Devotee translates)

"Who am I? What is this world? What relation have I with this world?" To learn the truth, a soul in this material world will always ask himself these questions.
Commentary by Çréla
Bhaktivinoda Öhäkura
Many days after their birth, human beings finally attain good knowledge of sense objects. The outside world perceived by the senses is called "viñaya" (the world of sense objects). As his sensory powers grow, a child becomes increasingly aware of the world of sense objects. Tasting pleasure there, he is drawn to the world of sense objects. Thus attracted to the world of sense objects, a human being thinks of and acts for nothing else. Becoming a constant companion, sound, touch, form, taste, and smell gradually turn the human mind into their slave. In this way human beings are plunged into the world of sense objects. "Death must come, and when it does, I will have no relationship with this world of senses objects." When this thought arises, a fortunate person turns from the world of sense objects and yearns to know the truth. He then asks these questions: "Who am I, the person who perceives this world? What is this world? What relation have I with this world?"

Because of their different natures, those who ask these questions attain a great variety of answers. Only a soul situated in his original spiritual form attains the true answers.
Commentary by Çréla
Bhaktivinoda Öhäkura
A
person who has turned away from the world of sense objects finds
an answer to these three questions. Scriptures and philosophies attempt
to answer these three questions. In our country answers are given
by the Vedas, Vedänta, and other books following the Vedic teachings.
Answers are also given by philosophies that misinterpret the Vedic
teachings, philosophies like nyäya, pseudo-säìkhya,
pätaïjala, vaiçeñika, and karma-mémäàsä.
Answers are also given by philosophies that openly oppose the Vedic
teachings, philosophies like Buddhism and the philosophy of the atheist
Cärväka. In this way many philosophies give many different
answers. In China, Greece, Persia, France, England, Germany, Italy,
and other countries many different philosophies were preached, philosophies
like Materialism, Positivism, Secularism, Pessimism, Scepticism,
Pantheism, and Atheism. Many philosophers used logic to prove the
existence of God. Then again, in other places was preached the idea
that one should simply believe in God and worship Him. In many places
were preached religions that claimed to be originally given by God.
Some religions were rooted in each person's own individual faith
in God. In other places it was said that God Himself had given the
teachings of religion. Religion rooted in each person's own individual
faith is called Theism. Included among the religions with belief-systems
and scriptures given by God are Christianity and Mohammedanism. The
answers to the poreviously mentioned three questions are truly of
two kinds: 1. the answer given by a soul situated in his original
form, and 2. the great variety of answers given by all others. Why
is not a single answer only given to each of these questions? The
true answers are given by a pure person situated in his original
spiritual form. All persons situated in their original spiritual
forms give the same answers. However, the persons who have fallen
into the material world are not situated in their original spiritual
forms. The material world is not their real home. It is a world born
from material illusion. The Supreme Truth (para- tattva) has a spiritual
potency (parä çakti). The shadow of that spiritual potency
is the potency of illusion (mäyä-çakti). Mäyä-çakti
is the mother of the material world. The great variety of qualities
mäyä offers are accepted by the souls residing in the material
world as their own qualities. In this way the soul's original qualities
are withdrawn and the specific mixture of qualities and an identity
offered by mäyä are accepted by the soul. In this way the
spirit soul identifies with matter. Spiritual and material ideas
thus become mixed together in many different ways in the mind of
the spirit soul. Each accepting a different mixture of material qualities,
the spirit souls misidentifying with matter each give his own answers
to these three questions. In this way a great variety of answers
is manifest. Influenced by the traditions, activities, associates,
foods, language, and thought patterns of the countries where they
live, the souls in this world give answers to these three questions.
In this way time, place, and circumstance combine to create a great
variety of natures. Firstly, the souls come in contact with matter
in different ways. Those different kinds of contact bring one set
of variations of nature. Secondly, their different countries, languages,
families, and other circumstances bring another set of variations
of nature. In this way the a great variety of natures becomes multiplied.
Only a person who has traveled to every country, learned every language,
and studied every country's history can understand the scope of that
variety. Here I will only point in the direction of that variety.
I will not do more. It would be a great trouble. Of the two kinds
of answers given by the living entities, one is the true answer.
The other is the great variety of answers according to the views
of different philosophies. The great variety of answers may be divided
into two groups. The first group is called “jïäna" and the second
group is called "karma". Here someone may protest: "When you say
the true (yukta) answer you imply that you honor logic (yukti) as
the way to know the truth. Why, then, do you not accept the great
variety of answers that logic brings?" To this protest I reply: Spiritual
logic does not depend on the material logic that brings a variety
of answers. Therefore when I use the words logic (yukti) and truth
(yukta), I refer to the logic and truth accepted by liberated souls
purified of matter's touch, logic and truth that properly distinguish
between matter and spirit. Logic that is material, that takes shelter
of matter, will always lead to a great variety of conclusions. A
liberated soul situated in his original spiritual form can give the
true, the genuinely logical answer. Among the great variety of answers
is seen the group called jnana. Employing jïäna, the spirit
soul in contact with matter tries to distinguish spirit from matter.
When it speaks positively (anvaya), jïäna affirms the primacy
of matter, saying matter is the beginningless root of all that exists.
When it speaks negatively (vyatireka) jïäna says that matter
cannot be destroyed, for it is merely a transformation of the Supreme
(brhaman), who has no potencies (niùçakti). They who follow
karma say God does not exist, and therefore the living entities should
engage in material activities. Pure jïäna and karma have
their place in true spiritual love and spiritual activities. They
are part of the true answers to our three questions. They will be
discussed later in this book, when devotional service (bhakti) will
be described. Because they are material in nature, words cannot completely
describe the pure spiritual truth.

"IN EVERY TOWN AND VILLAGE the chanting of the Holy Name of Krishna shall be heard. This was the forecast made by Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu almost 500 years ago in India. Today, as the Hare Krishna Mantra -- Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare, Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare -- resounds in Bombay and New York, Nairobi and Sydney, and in Paris and Hong Kong, the prophecy of Lord Caitanya stands fulfilled. The universal import of this "Samkirtan Movement" (the congregational chanting of the Holy Names of the Lord) was expressed by Lord Caitanya as follows:
"Glory to the Sri Krishna Samkirtan which cleanses the heart of all the dust accumulated for years together. Thus the fire of conditional life, of repeated birth and death, is extinguished. The Samkirtan Movement is the prime benediction for humanity at large because it spreads the rays of the benediction Moon. It is the life of all transcendental knowledge, it increases the ocean of transcendental bliss, and it helps us to have a taste of the full nectar for which we are always anxious."

Agama Tantra and the Vaishnava Samskaras as a way of life:
Recently I was asked, "Don't you find it an inconvenience to always be checking to see when is the right time to do this or the best time for that?"
In simple terms my answer was and still is; if you go to the bus or railway station or airport it is probably an intelligent venture to enquire about the times and routes of vehicles than to just hope that one will be along soon, or one is going in your direction.
There are subtle influences in the Universe that, for thousands of years gone by, advanced cultures have honoured, respected and utilised. Before the corruption of the Vedik literatures by the Christian and Moslem invaders to India all these things were used; Ayurvedik Medicine; Vedik Astrology; etc. Today there's a rennaisance among many to revive these arts.
We have been trained and studied to be able to provide these services. See some of my sites:

"The religious principles taught by Mohammed and Jesus Christ are similar to the religious principles taught by Vaishnava sects. Buddhism and Jainism are similar to Saiva-dharma. This is scientific consideration of truths regarding religious principles. Those who consider their own religious principles as real dharma and others religious principles as irreligion or subreligion are unable to ascertain the truth due to being influenced by prejudice. Actually religious principles followed by people in general are different only due to the different qualifications of the practitioners, but the constitutional religious principles of all living entities are one." Food For Life Global helps Tsunami victims
http://www.ffl.org/html/ffl_tsunami_relief.html
Indradyumna Swami from food distribution in Sri Lankha
http://blog.world-sankirtan.net/IDS/
Silver lining in a dark cloud:
January 2005 - Sri Lanka
I have been quite moved by what I have seen and experianced during my two weeks of disaster relief work here in Sri Lanka. I have travelled the world as a monk ( sannyasi ) for 35 years and have seen many disturbing situations; war in Grozny, the aftermath of war in Sarajevo, hunger in Sudan. But to echo the recent words of Colin Powell, I have never seen anything as devastating as the tsunami disaster here in Sri Lanka.
I traveled along the coast from Colombo to Galle yesterday and saw devastation worse than war. Whole villages had disappeared. Hardly a home was left standing. Bridges were destroyed, train tracks uprooted. Everything was rubble - for hundred of kilometers. I was stunned by the force of the Tsunami wave.
Myself and party were going to do food relief in the refugee camps. When we arrived the army assisted us. However, I soon saw that the refugees, for the most part, were not hungry. Soon after the disaster the government, aided by generous donations from around the world, had began providing food for the victims of the tragedy. I inquired further and learned that there is no scarcity of food in any of the refugee camps throughout the country.
Neither have there been any epidemics. There are medical personel available in all refugee camps.
I must say that it is a credit to the people of the world, who reacted so swiftly and with such generosity, that hunger and disease have been avoided here in Sri Lanka. I have heard that the situation is the same in the other 10 countries affected by the Tsunami. It is wonderful that so many barriers have been broken down ( at least temporarily ) as a result of the disaster. I believe it is unprecedented. If only such sentiments of cooperation could continue in the world. History has shown they often don’t.
I believe the real issue now at hand - as regards relief work - is the many orphaned children in this country. Personally, I am redirecting ISKCON’s efforts here from food relief, to taking care of orphaned children. It simply breaks my heart to see them crying in the refugee camps.
Here in Colombo, our local Hare Krsna temple runs a successful orphanage with 100 children. My efforts will now be to raise funds to expand that orphange so that it can accept another 100 children whose parents died in the disaster. I will even request the orphanage to take several children I have personally met in my travels; kids whose big eyes, sad faces and desire for love have captured my heart.
I am not sure what the media is reporting these days, as I have no access to television. But I have been to the ravaged coast and cried my tears of sympathy for the dead, the dying and the injured. I have walked through the refugee camps, spoken to the people, heard their stories and given them my shoulder to lean on. And significantly, I seen first hand the result of unprecedented world sympathy for the victims. People are being taken care of - as best one can under such circumstances. Food is here, medicine is here and homes are slowly being built for the people to return to. Of course, no one can replace their loved ones. And only time may help them to recover from the trauma they experienced.
I am leaving here soon. I will take with me an enduring impression of the cruel face that material nature sometimes shows, but the assurance that sometimes, if ever so rarely, the human race can work together in a spirit of love to help each other. This can only be God’s grace.
Yours,
Indradyumna Swami

Two monks from Aldenham's Hare Krishna temple have gone to Sri Lanka to help survivors of the tsunami disaster.
Vaikuntha Krishna das and Niti Laksa das, from Bhaktivedanta Manor in Hilfield Lane, have joined a team of American volunteers at a relief camp dedicated to cooking and feeding thousands of homeless victims left without basic supplies.
Before leaving this week, Vaikuntha said: "I want to go and help out in Sri Lanka because I see it as fulfilling a personal responsibility, as well as it being very much part of my faith.
"Feeding people in need is a central activity in the Hare Krishna movement, and so we are well-equipped and trained to deal with the immense amount of work that lies ahead."
He added that it was even more important to ensure the long-term rehabilitation of the victims including psychological counselling, chaplaincy, building new homes and schools as well as employment and livelihood.
Since December 30, 500,0000 vegetarian meals have been distributed by ISKCON (the Hare Krishna movement) and this relief work is set to continue indefinitely, with work now underway in some of the hardest-hit Sri Lankan coastal towns and inland communities such as Trincomalee and Hambantota.
Bhaktivedanta Manor has so far raised over £200,000 towards the disaster.
To donate to their appeal, you can send a cheque, made payable to 'ISKCON Tsunami Flood Appeal' to Bhaktivedanta Manor, Aldenham, Watford, Herts, WD25 8EZ.
Alternatively, you can call 01923 856848 or 07713 133313.

Colombo, Sri Lanka - Food for Life has given out more than 150,000 hot meals in Sri Lanka and 100,000 in India since the Dec. 26 tsunami. In Sri Lanka, the humanitarian organization has provided food relief in Batticaloa, Maratuwa, Matara, Point Pedro, and Trincomalee, states a ISKCON (Sri Lanka) press release.
"We are a non-sectarian organization. In fact, Food for Life Global's motto is 'Uniting the World Through Food,'" explained Mahakarta Das, President of ISKCON, Sri Lanka.
Immediately after the waves hit the U.S. based headquarters of the NGO, Food for Life Global began coordinating relief efforts. Volunteers from around the world began arriving in Sri Lanka to help set up food relief kitchens throughout the island.
One of the first operations was in the Matara district where FFL cooperated with the Sri Lankan military to provide freshly cooked rice, dhal, and vegetable curry to families in relief camps.
ISKCON Swami, Indradyumna Maharaja, actually flew from South Africa to meet with the Presidential Secretary to coordinate the relief efforts in Matara.
ISKCON's food distribution will continue for the next few months. However, its main focus now is the tsunami orphans.
Responding to this need, plans are underway to expand ISKCON's Bhaktivedanta Children's Home to accommodate 250 needy children.
The Home is reputed to be the best of its kind in Sri Lanka.

BHUBANESWAR, INDIA, January 19, 2005: A sacred metal wheel at the 12th
century Jagannath temple in Orissa is safe, experts have said after
examining it with the help of sophisticated equipment. Experts from the
National Metallurgical Laboratory (NML) and the Archaeological Survey of
India (ASI) spent three hours examining the wheel on the top of the temple
in the coastal town of Puri using a high-resolution scanner and other gadgets.
The examination, the third since a five sq cm hole on the wheel was noticed
by devotees in May, revealed that the structure is safe, an official told
IANS. The experts, including R.N. Ghosh, director of NML, and Jitendra
Das, ASI's Bhubaneswar superintendent, will issue a detailed report and
make recommendations after all the data is studied. The Jagannath temple
is dedicated to Lord Vishnu, one of the Hindu holy trinity. The conical
tower of the temple, on which the flag and the wheel of the deity are installed,
is 58 metres high. Each day devotees climb the tower to tie a flag to the
mast attached to the wheel. In May 2004, they told temple authorities about
the hole in the sacred 'neel chakra' or blue wheel. The wheel, made of
an alloy of eight metals, is 3.5 m high and 11 m in circumference. Experts
say the wheel turns blue when the sun heats it. The state government had
sought the help of the experts after an intense public outcry over allegations
by the ASI that the temple, and especially the wheel, was being inadequately
maintained.

Tragedies for some but might turn out the other way (opportunities or blessings) We know that 80% of the town of Meulaboh in Aceh was destroyed by the Tsunami waves and 80% of the people also died. This is one of the towns that were hit the hardest. But there is a fantastic testimony from Meulaboh.
In that town are about 400 Christians. They wanted to celebrate Christmas on December 25th but were not allowed to do so by the Muslims of Meulaboh. They were told if they wanted to celebrate Christmas they needed to go outside the city of Meulaboh on a high hill and they can celebrate Christmas there.
Because the Christians desired to celebrate Christmas the 400 believers left the city on December 25th and after they celebrated Christmas they stayed overnight on the hill. As we all know, in the morning of Sunday, December 26 -2004, there was the earthquake followed by the Tsunami waves destroying most of the city of Meulaboh and thousands were killed. The 400 believers were on the mountain and were all saved from destruction.
Now, the Muslims of Meulaboh are saying that the God of the Christians punished them for forbidding the Christians to celebrate Christmas in the city. Others are questioning why so many Muslims died while not even one of the Christians died there.
Had the Christians insisted on their rights to celebrate Christmas in the city, they would have all died. But because they humbled themselves and followed the advice of the Muslims they all were spared destruction and can now testify of God's marvellous protection.
This is a testimony of the grace of God and the fact that as believers we have no rights in the world. Our rights come before God and commit our lives to Him. Our rights are kneeling down before the Lord almighty and commit our ways to Him. He is our Father and is very capable to care for His children.
Praise the Name of the Lord!

BANGALORE, INDIA, January 21, 2005: There was a total chaos in the press meet organized by the committee of "Pray for India and Festival of Blessing" (Benny Hinn's Program) in Bangalore. This colorful report from the Hindu activist RSS news service ("source") reads, in part:
The program organizers Gul Kriplani, Paul Thangaiah, former DGP Kolaso, Ruban, Satyavrat and Samuel spoke about the objectives of Benny Hinn's program to be organized in the city of 21st of this month. After all this, question/answer session started: First a Hindu Voice Representative questioned about the handbills which has been distributed throughout Bangalore city in which it has targeted Hindus as followers of idol worship, prostitution, black magic, etc. and advised to accept Jesus as the only God. Gul Kriplani evades the question by saying that it is not their pamphlet and they have nothing to do with that. He demanded a copy of the leaflet to be produced immediately and said that whosoever is responsible action will be taken against him. Suddenly a media person presented it to him saying, "Here it is." Stunned Gul Kriplani said: "I have no idea about it, Mr. Colaso and Paul Thangaiah will answer you." Paul Thangaiah and Colaso said: "This pamphlet is not for public distribution, but for Church circulation and should have been distributed only to Christians." Hearing this, the media men were on their feet and protested his comments, saying: "You people have already circulated over 300,000 pamphlets in all the pockets of Bangalore and now you are saying it is only for church circulation, who are you trying to fool? That means you are preaching hate against the Hindu community in your churches," for which both Paul Thangaiah and Colaso had become voiceless and were looking helpless.
HPI adds: It is a violation of Indian law to circulate material which is critical of other religions, which made the pamphlet a substantial issue.

Mix Of Quake Aid And Preaching Stirs Concern

MORAKETIYA, SRI LANKA, January 19, 2005: A dozen Americans walked into a relief camp here, showering bereft parents and traumatized children with gifts, attention and affection. They also quietly offered camp residents something else: Jesus, begins this article. The Americans, who all come from one church in Texas, have staged plays detailing the life of Jesus and had children draw pictures of him, camp residents said. The attempts at proselytizing are angering local Christian leaders, who worry that they could provoke a violent backlash against Christians in Sri Lanka, a predominantly Buddhist country. Most American groups, including those affiliated with religious organizations, strictly avoid mixing aid and missionary work. But scattered reports of proselytizing in Sri Lanka, Indonesia and India are arousing concerns that the good will spread by the American relief efforts may be undermined by resentment.
The Americans in Sri Lanka belong to the Antioch Community Church, an evangelical church based in Waco, Texas. It is one of a growing number of evangelical groups that believe in mixing aid-giving with discussing religion, an approach that older, more established Christian aid groups call unethical. In Sri Lanka, alarmed local Christian leaders say proselytizing at such a sensitive time could reverse the grass-roots interfaith cooperation that has emerged since the tsunami and endanger Christians, who make up 7 percent of the population. Older Christian aid groups say they do not proselytize, abiding by Red Cross guidelines that humanitarian aid not be used to further political or religious purposes. Ken Hackett, president of Catholic Relief services, said that in the last 20 years there had been an increase of smaller Christian evangelical groups providing relief aid in the wake of disaster. "I think there are new groups that are driven by missionary zeal," Mr Hackett said. In the last several weeks, Mr. Hackett said, his group has received anecdotal reports of proselytizing in countries devastated by the tsunami.
More evangelical groups are apparently on their way. A message posted on the Web site of the Moral Majority leader Jerry Falwell says the school he founded, Liberty University, is preparing to send a team to Sri Lanka, India and other countries battered by the tsunami. "Distribution of food and medical supplies along with the dissemination of thousands of gospel tracts in the language of the people will keep the L.U. team very busy," the Web site says. "Mission trips to the Asian region by many L.U. students will follow in the months, and perhaps years, to come."

On the occasion of the 108th appearance Anniversary of Srila Prabhupada under the guidance and inspiration of H.H. Lokanath Swami Maharaja and all ISKCON leaders of India, ISKCON Pune organized a grand successful National Youth Festival. We could clearly as students see that tremendous efforts were made for organizing this festival, which was indeed a grand success.
Over 5,000 students from across the nation participated. Well over 12 Sannyasis (H.H. Lokanath Swami, H.H. Radhanath Swami, H.H. Subhag Swami, H.H. Gopal Krishna Goswami, H.H. Jayadvaita Swami, H.H. Radha Govinda Swami, H.H. Nava Yogendra Swami, H.H. Bhakti Vikasa Swami, H.H. Veda Vyasa Priya Swami, H.H. Jayapataka Swami, H.H. Bhakti Purusottama Swami and H.H Sukadeva Swami) attended the program along with several ISKCON leaders.
Many great dignitaries like the Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Mr.R.R. Patil, founder chancellor of Bharati Vidyapeeth Deemed University, Dr.Patangarao Kadam and others graced the occasion. All of them were full of heartfelt praise for this festival, encouraging more such events in future.
All the students coming from different parts of India were accommodated in different lodges with a provision of mattresses, blankets, pillows, bed sheets and hot water. Shuttle bus services from the festival ground to the different lodges during mornings and evenings made everything even more convenient for the students.
There were 28 display stalls put up by various temples and youth groups all over India. We were served breakfast, lunch and dinner prasadam, which was opulent and sumptuous.
We from Nagpur were a strong group of 50 students, mostly new who traveled by bus from Nagpur to Pune I.a 21-hour road trip as our bus wouldn't exceed the limit of 45 kms per hour. ISKCON Vallabh Vidya Nagar (Gujarat) brought 108 students.
Srila Prabhupada katha, his pastimes, guidelines, instructions and quotes were spoken by disciples of Prabhupada showing the Indian youth how Prabhupada was a unique leader who transformed the lives of thousands of youths who were plunged in self destructive habits and bogus-isms etc.
The day began with mangala-arati, Tulasi kirtan, breakfast and Bhagavatam class. Two sannyasis gave the Bhagavatam class, one hour each. There were seminars on "Mind Management", "Power of Habits" and "Revolution in Consciousness" conducted by different sannyasis. Twenty minutes were given to each leader and the balance time was for questions and answers.
We had debate and discussion competition in which 5 ISKCON Youth forums from 5 different ISKCON temples sent their representatives as one pair or one team. One of the two spoke for the topic and one against the topic. Each team got 6 minutes, 3 minutes for each member to represent his side. There were 2 topics on 2 different days.
ISKCON Nagpur chose the topic "Is Youth Meant for Enlightenment or Enjoyment?" The best part is that ISKCON Nagpur bagged the first prize with Shyam Mohan Prabhu and Gauranga Dasa on the team. Also Gauranga Dasa was given the "best individual debater" prize. The second prize was bagged by ISKCON Chowpatty. The judges were Rasaraja Prabhu (BI) and Gauranga Prabhu (IIT, Chowpatty).
There was yet another debate the next day on the topic "Manava Seva or Madhava Seva" in which other temples participated. The judges were H.H. Jayadvaita Swami and H.G. Mukunda Madhava Prabhu. ISKCON Delhi got the first prize for this debate. After the debates the judges clarified the misconceptions that arose in the course of the debate giving a Krsna conscious angle of view.
There were also drama presentations by ISKCON Juhu. The presentations were so great that they very powerfully impacted the students with the message and importance of Krsna consciousness. Ekalavya Prabhu and Vishvambhar Prabhu played orchestra and performed kirtan most of the time. There were multimedia presentations in the stalls and Rasaraja Prabhu's scientific slide projector power point presentations, which were based on understanding quantum through Vedic scriptures.
There was a special Q/A session called "Material Problems and Spiritual Solutions" in which ISKCON leaders inspired the youth by speaking on relevant pastimes of Srila Prabhupada and giving valuable instructions.
Later the Leaders took questions on paper from students and gave brief answers pertaining to the questions taking turns one by one. In the end the gurukulis from Bhaktivedanta Gurukula And International School from Vrndavana performed a show depicting the life in the gurukula. A Souvenir was released on the occasion of the National Youth Festival.
We know that never has there been such an ecstatic program for youth conducted before in the history of ISKCON. It was simply wonderful! We have learned many new things. We saw the humility and cooperation in which devotees work and this has left an indelible mark on our lives.
Hare Krsna.
Your servant,
Gauranga Dasa

Newsweek Hears Hindu Complaints on Tsunami Coverage
http://msnbc.msn.com/id/6830713/site/newsweek/
USA, January 19, 2005: Newsweek magazine printed the following letter from Aseem Shukla of the Hindu American Foundation, along with a rebuttal. The article in question dealt with the theological reaction of Christianity, Buddhism, Islam and Hinduism. The views of each, with the exception of Hinduism, were represented by educated members. Only in the case of Hinduism did the article try to state the view of the uneducated villagers -- and even in doing so, quoting an American-based, non-Hindu scholar, and not the villagers.
Letter begins:
Kenneth L. Woodward's depiction of the Hindu view of suffering after
the devastating Indian Ocean tsunami was deeply flawed ("Countless Souls
Cry Out to God," Jan. 10). Woodward dismissed Hindu victims as "untutored"
animists who viewed the disaster as the hapless consequence of "capricious
deities." Hindus believe that there is one God who is omnipotent and omnipresent
throughout the universe and worshiped by people in different forms according
to their individual perceptions. Hardly capricious, Hindus perceive God's
grace as always flowing and easily felt by those who open their minds to
receive that blessing. Multiple millennia before Buddhism, Hindu Scripture
defined the relationship between reincarnation and karma. Recognizing an
eternality of existence, Hindus take comfort in the face of calamity knowing
that while the body may die and be shed as old clothes, the immortal soul
continues its journey in the next life along its path toward God.

Editor's Note: NEWSWEEK recognizes that in all religious traditions, including Hinduism, there are differences between popular piety and intellectually sophisticated spiritual reflections. Our article specifically stated that we were describing the outlook and reactions of the inhabitants of poor fishing communities, mostly Hindus, who typically "are untutored in refined theological speculation on life and death."

NENGTI PANCHO
There is a story told by Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Thakur called the nengti pancho. In a village, there was a very prominent village leader. But naturally, because of village politics there were a few people who were envious of him. These envious people would always find some reason to criticize him. Thi
