Srimad Bhagavad Gita AS IT IS

Bhagavad Gita:  Chapter 2 - Contents of the Gita Summarized

               TEXT 68

                         tasmad yasya maha-baho
                           nigrhitani sarvasah
                        indriyanindriyarthebhyas
                        tasya prajna pratisthita

                             WORD FOR WORD
   tasmat--therefore; yasya--whose; maha-baho--O mighty-armed one; nigrhitani--so curbed down; sarvasah--all around; indriyani--the senses; indriya-arthebhyah--from sense objects; tasya--his; prajna--intelligence; pratisthita--fixed.

                               TRANSLATION
Therefore, O mighty-armed, one whose senses are restrained from their objects is certainly of steady intelligence.

PURPORT by HDG Srila A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada:
One can curb the forces of sense gratification only by means of Krsna consciousness, or engaging all the senses in the transcendental loving service of the Lord. As enemies are curbed by superior force, the senses can similarly be curbed, not by any human endeavor, but only by keeping them engaged in the service of the Lord. One who has understood this--that only by Krsna consciousness is one really established in intelligence and that one should practice this art under the guidance of a bona fide spiritual master--is called sadhaka, or a suitable candidate for liberation.

His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada

Prabhupada Uvacha:
(here's some nectar, sometimes it comes in the form of Srutakirti prabhu's diary, other times from Govinda dasi's diary, or sometimes from a letter, but still nectar...)

You must go on pulling

This morning was particularly memorable. The sun was shining brightly through the tall and narrow windows, casting patches of dazzling light on the clean, white sheets on the floor. He sat comfortably in the middle, his legs crossed, right ankle resting on the left knee. His fingers loosely intertwined, he closed his eyes briefly and enjoyed the warmth of the sun as it danced upon his golden form. Seeing the opportunity, Hansaduta, Harikesa, and I sat on either side of him, just happy to be with him in a quiet moment. He began to reflect on the unfortunate state of the world's inhabitants. He explained that due to a lack of knowledge about the Supreme Lord people are suffering. Under the false impression of being independent they commit all kinds of sinful acts, not knowing and not caring for the results, foolishly thinking they are free to do as they like. But when the volume of sinful life becomes too great they suffer the consequences in the form of pestilence or war. They think that by politics and meetings they can avoid such things, but that is not possible. They are helpless to prevent them, and therefore they receive their punishment through the three-fold miseries of life. At just the right moment, nature brings the demons together and engages them in war.

To illustrate the point, he gave an amusing but striking example of how maya works. "In my young days we had one teacher. Whenever there was any misbehavior between the boys, the teacher would stop them and bring them out to the front of the class. He would make them stand face-to-face and each take hold of the ears of the other and on his order make them pull. So the one, he is pulling, and the other is hurting, so he pulls back even harder, and each one is pulling and crying. But they cannot let go because the teacher is ordering, 'No, you cannot stop. You must go on pulling!' Similarly, maya brings together one Churchill and one Hitler. 'Now, rascal, pull!' And neither can stop. And the foolish people glorify them."

The thought of the scene so humored him that even before he finished he began to laugh heartily. His shoulders and belly shook, and his brilliant teeth flashed like pearls in the sun. When Prabhupada smiles the entire room, even the universe, seems to light up. It's a Vaikuntha smile that spreads transcendental effulgence everywhere around. Prabhupada's mood was so open and congenial it seemed, if just for a moment, that we had joined a picnic with Krsna and His cowherd boyfriends, joking and laughing in the forests of Goloka. We laughed with him, glancing at each other in appreciation and wonder as to who this extraordinary personality Srila Prabhupada really is. He is far beyond our comprehension, yet we feel ourselves extremely fortunate to share these intimate moments with him.

It was an entrancing moment, and it occurred to me that Srila Prabhupada must have many friends in the spiritual world with whom he can eternally enjoy happy and carefree days. Yet being extraordinarily merciful he chooses to be here among us. Although the most exalted personality, he appears to like nothing better than to be with his disciples, foolish and neophyte as we are. He gives the impression there is no one in the world he would rather be with and nothing he would rather be doing than sharing whatever he has with us, although we have nothing to give him in return that could possibly be of interest to him. It seems a lopsided relationship, but Prabhupada doesn't mind. He is not looking for anything for himself, only to see what he can give us. As a result, we have obtained more than any of us can ever have hoped for.

- From the "A Transcendental Diary Vol 1" by HG Hari Sauri dasa

Prabhupada: Simply for Krsna, there is simply to understand Krsna. Anything else-waste of time. But in Krsna's connection there are varieties. Does it mean, although the dictaphone is there, still I shall write in my hand? Krsna consciousness cannot touch this. We don't follow this nonsense philosophy. Unnecessary vairagya. Suska-vairagya, dry knowledge.
Devotee (1): Suska-vairagya.
Prabhupada: Suska, suska means dry. Oh, it is material, I shall not touch. I shall not touch. Just like that rascal, Ramakrishna, if anyone wanted to give him some money (gesture). (laughter) How, he does not touch money. These rascals, why shall I not touch? Come on, you have got money, George Harrison, spend. Yes, come on, I shall take it, for Krsna. We haven't come to this house for living very comfortably and enjoying. No, we have come here for Krsna's service.
Hamsaduta: This point is revolutionary in spiritual circles.
Prabhupada: Because it is Krsna's property. It is not my property, neither George's property. This is mistake. Everything belongs to Krsna. So it must be utilized for Krsna.
Revatinandana: Simply they don't know Bhagavad-gita.
Prabhupada: Eh?
Revatinandana: They don't know Bhagavad-gita, therefore they don't understand us.
Prabhupada: No, no. Therefore I say, all... Immediately, how you are all rascals. We have got a test. Test tube. As soon as one is not Krsna conscious, he is rascal, he is miscreant, he is lowest of the mankind, he has no knowledge. These, these are groups, they belong to. Na mam duskrtino mudhah prapadyante naradhamah. He maintains that he is very big man, Nixon, but we know that he is a rascal number one. This is Krsna consciousness. You can understand immediately what is what. By this test:

na mam duskrtino mudhah
prapadyante naradhamah
mayayapahrta-jnana
asuram bhavam asritah
 [Bg. 7.15]

[break]
Revatinandana: ...you said if he's coming from God, then what difference does it make?
Prabhupada: You can see that you are a fool (but) God is not fool. That is the difference. But God is (indistinct), He'll not speak foolish. Because he is above all this foolishness but you are within the foolishness. That is the difference. Try to answer them like that. You are within the status of foolishness, maya, and God is above maya. If God is also within the maya, as the rascal Mayavadis say, then what is the use of God? We are everything.
Yogesvara: They just accumulate knowledge just for knowledge sake.
Prabhupada: Not just for knowledge because they do not get any knowledge. They have no knowledge. What is the knowledge? They talk all nonsense. What is the knowledge?
Revatinandana: His argument was "Well there's no point in talking about this matter. All of us accept this." He's saying: all big authorities, they accept this point of view, that this was recently written literature.
Prabhupada: No, they don't know who are authorities.
Revatinandana: That's right.
Prabhupada: You manufacture your own authorities. You do not know. That is your misfortune. You do not know who is authority.
Devotee (2): They all smoke cigarettes and they think they're authorities. They're nonsense.
Revatinandana: I met another old authority on Sanskrit and he is sitting behind his desk and his whole body is shaking: "No, I'm not interested in the spiritual side of these Vedas. I'm just interested in the Sanskrit." He's dying you know, and still he's like that. That's their authority. You can't save them but...
Prabhupada: Adhyaki, adhyaki(?), therefore adhyaki(?).
Revatinandana: What's that?
Prabhupada: External. Adhyaki(?). (indistinct) ...one is interested in the body not in the soul. So he is a fool. This, this sculptor, he is simply interested in the outward body, he has no knowledge of the soul. And he wants to become a very famous man, remaining in the category of asses. Because one who is in the bodily concept of life, he is an ass. Go-khara, khara means ass. Sa eva go-kharah [SB 10.84.13]. Yasyatma-buddhih kunape tri-dhatuke [SB 10.84.13]. Anyone who is in the bodily concept of life he is no better than animal. The cats and dogs, they are also in the bodily concept of life. Sa eva go-kharah [SB 10.84.13]. So he has not advanced beyond these cats and dogs because he is in the same conception, that I am this body. A dog cannot understand that you are not this body. So similarly, if the human being cannot understand that he is not this body, what is the difference between him and the dog? So sastra says sa eva go-kharah: [SB 10.84.13] he's no better than the cows and the asses. That's all. And actually it is a fact. The first instruction of Bhagavad-gita, they cannot take it, and they're scholars. That is the most regrettable situation that these fools and rascals under the bodily concept of life, they are become authorities. Actually they are asses. Yes.

"When the devotees remember Lord Hari, their hearts become overwhelmed with bliss, their bodily hairs stand erect in horipulations, and their eyes become filled with tears of joy. O Mother Earth, these devotees are the best of men. Please carefully maintain them for long as the Sun and the Moon shine in the sky. What is the use of your carefully maintaining those other burdensome persons (the non-devotees) who are simply intent on coming and going to and from the house of Yamaraja in repeated birth and death?"

"Devotees can never be satiated even though one continuously hears the transcendental pastimes of Kåñëa, who is glorified by Vedic hymns. Those who have entered into a transcendental relationship with Kåñëa relish in every step descriptions of the pastimes of the Lord."

SYNONYMS

TRANSLATION
I worship herewith the lotus feet of all kinds of devotees, both advanced and neophyte. I request all of them to be satisfied with me. I am faultless because I have written herein whatever I have understood from Svarüpa Dämodara Gosvämé and Rüpa and Raghunätha däsa Gosvämés. I have neither added to nor subtracted from their version.

PURPORT
According to Çréla Bhaktisiddhänta Sarasvaté Öhäkura, there are three kinds of devotees, known as bhajana-vijïa (experts in devotional service), bhajana-çéla (devotees engaged in devotional service), and kåñëa-näme dékñita kåñëa-näma-käré (initiated devotees engaged in chanting). The author of Çré Caitanya-caritämåta begs the mercy of all these devotees and asks them to be pleased with him. He says, “Let the neophyte devotees—the devotees who are very expert in arguing though they have no sense of advanced devotional service, who think themselves very advanced because they imitate some smärta-brähmaëa—let such devotees not be displeased with me, thinking that I have committed errors in this regard. I beg their pardon with great humility, but I am submitting that I personally have no desire to add or subtract anything. I have only written what I have heard in the disciplic succession because I am dedicated to the lotus feet of previous äcäryas like Svarüpa Dämodara, Raghunätha däsa Gosvämé and Rüpa Gosvämé. I have only written what I have learned from them.”

Süta Gosvämé said: Unto that personality whom Brahmä, Varuëa, Indra, Rudra and the Maruts praise by chanting transcendental hymns and reciting the Vedas with all their corollaries, pada-kramas and Upaniñads, to whom the chanters of the Säma Veda always sing, whom the perfected yogés see within their minds after fixing themselves in trance and absorbing themselves within Him, and whose limit can never be found by any demigod or demon—unto that Supreme Personality of Godhead I offer my humble obeisances.(Srimad Bhagavatam 12:3:1.)

My dear Lord, You are the Mahä-puruña, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, and I worship Your lotus feet, which are the only eternal object of meditation. Those feet destroy the embarrassing conditions of material life and freely award the greatest desire of the soul, the attainment of pure love of Godhead. My dear Lord, Your lotus feet are the shelter of all holy places and of all saintly authorities in the line of devotional service and are honored by powerful demigods like Lord Çiva and Lord Brahmä. My Lord, You are so kind that You willingly protect all those who simply bow down to You with respect, and thus You mercifully relieve all the distress of Your servants. In conclusion, my Lord, Your lotus feet are actually the suitable boat for crossing over the ocean of birth and death, and therefore even Lord Brahmä and Lord Çiva seek shelter at Your lotus feet." (Srimad Bhagavatam 11:5:33.)

When the Supreme Personality of Godhead appeared as Lord Kürma, a tortoise, His back was scratched by the sharp-edged stones lying on massive, whirling Mount Mandara, and this scratching made the Lord sleepy. May you all be protected by the winds caused by the Lord's breathing in this sleepy condition. Ever since that time, even up to the present day, the ocean tides have imitated the Lord's inhalation and exhalation by piously coming in and going out. (Srimad Bhagavatam 12:13:2.)

PURPORT
At times we alleviate an itching sensation by blowing upon it. Similarly, Çréla Bhaktisiddhänta Sarasvaté Öhäkura explains, the breathing of the Supreme Personality of Godhead can alleviate the itching sensation within the minds of mental speculators, as well as the itching of the material senses of conditioned souls engaged in sense gratification. Thus by meditating on the windy breath of Lord Kürma—the tortoise incarnation—all categories of conditioned souls can be relieved of the deficiencies of material existence and come to the liberated, spiritual platform. One must simply allow the pastimes of Lord Kürma to blow within one's heart like a favorable breeze; then one will surely find spiritual peace.

The supreme occupation [dharma] for all humanity is that by which men can attain to loving devotional service unto the transcendent Lord. Such devotional service must be unmotivated and uninterrupted to completely satisfy the self. (Srimad Bhagavatam 1:2:6.)

väsudeve bhagavati
bhakti-yogaù prayojitaù
janayaty äçu vairägyaà
jïänaà ca yad ahaitukam

By rendering devotional service unto the Personality of Godhead, Çré Kåñëa, one immediately acquires causeless knowledge and detachment from the world. (Srimad Bhagavatam 1:2:7.)

dharmaù svanuñöhitaù puàsäà
viñvaksena-kathäsu yaù
notpädayed yadi ratià
çrama eva hi kevalam

The occupational activities a man performs according to his own position are only so much useless labor if they do not provoke attraction for the message of the Personality of Godhead. (Srimad Bhagavatam 1:2:8.)

dharmasya hy äpavargyasya
närtho 'rthäyopakalpate
närthasya dharmaikäntasya
kämo läbhäya hi småtaù

All occupational engagements are certainly meant for ultimate liberation. They should never be performed for material gain. Furthermore, according to sages, one who is engaged in the ultimate occupational service should never use material gain to cultivate sense gratification.

PURPORT
We have already discussed that pure devotional service to the Lord is automatically followed by perfect knowledge and detachment from material existence. But there are others who consider that all kinds of different occupational engagements, including those of religion, are meant for material gain. The general tendency of any ordinary man in any part of the world is to gain some material profit in exchange for religious or any other occupational service. Even in the Vedic literatures, for all sorts of religious performances an allurement of material gain is offered, and most people are attracted by such allurements or blessings of religiosity. Why are such so-called men of religion allured by material gain? Because material gain can enable one to fulfill desires, which in turn satisfy sense gratification. This cycle of occupational engagements includes so-called religiosity followed by material gain and material gain followed by fulfillment of desires. Sense gratification is the general way for all sorts of fully occupied men. But in the statement of Süta Gosvämé, as per the verdict of the Çrémad-Bhägavatam, this is nullified by the present çloka.
One should not engage himself in any sort of occupational service for material gain only. Nor should material gain be utilized for sense gratification. How material gain should be utilized is described as follows.(Srimad Bhagavatam 1:2:9.)

kämasya nendriya-prétir
läbho jéveta yävatä
jévasya tattva-jijïäsä
närtho yaç ceha karmabhiù

Life's desires should never be directed toward sense gratification. One should desire only a healthy life, or self-preservation, since a human being is meant for inquiry about the Absolute Truth. Nothing else should be the goal of one's works.

PURPORT
The completely bewildered material civilization is wrongly directed towards the fulfillment of desires in sense gratification. In such civilization, in all spheres of life, the ultimate end is sense gratification. In politics, social service, altruism, philanthropy and ultimately in religion or even in salvation, the very same tint of sense gratification is ever-increasingly predominant. In the political field the leaders of men fight with one another to fulfill their personal sense gratification. The voters adore the so-called leaders only when they promise sense gratification. As soon as the voters are dissatisfied in their own sense satisfaction, they dethrone the leaders, The leaders must always disappoint the voters by not satisfying their senses. The same is applicable in all other fields; no one is serious about the problems of life. Even those who are on the path of salvation desire to become one with the Absolute Truth and desire to commit spiritual suicide for sense gratification. But the Bhägavatam says that one should not live for sense gratification. One should satisfy the senses only insomuch as required for self-preservation, and not for sense gratification. Because the body is made of senses, which also require a certain amount of satisfaction, there are regulative directions for satisfaction of such senses. But the senses are not meant for unrestricted enjoyment. For example, marriage or the combination of a man with a woman is necessary for progeny, but it is not meant for sense enjoyment. In the absence of voluntary restraint, there is propaganda for family planning, but foolish men do not know that family planning is automatically executed as soon as there is search after the Absolute Truth. Seekers of the Absolute Truth are never allured by unnecessary engagements in sense gratification because the serious students seeking the Absolute Truth are always overwhelmed with the work of researching the Truth. In every sphere of life, therefore, the ultimate end must be seeking after the Absolute Truth, and that sort of engagement will make one happy because he will be less engaged in varieties of sense gratification. And what that Absolute Truth is is explained as follows..(Srimad Bhagavatam 1:2:10.txt and purport)

vadanti tat tattva-vidas
tattvaà yaj jïänam advayam
brahmeti paramätmeti
bhagavän iti çabdyate

Learned transcendentalists who know the Absolute Truth call this nondual substance Brahman, Paramätmä or Bhagavän.

PURPORT
The Absolute Truth is both subject and object, and there is no qualitative difference there. Therefore, Brahman, Paramätmä and Bhagavän are qualitatively one and the same. The same substance is realized as impersonal Brahman by the students of the Upaniñads, as localized Paramätmä by the Hiraëyagarbhas or the yogés, and as Bhagavän by the devotees. In other words, Bhagavän, or the Personality of Godhead, is the last word of the Absolute Truth. Paramätmä is the partial representation of the Personality of Godhead, and impersonal Brahman is the glowing effulgence of the Personality of Godhead, as the sun rays are to the sun-god. Less intelligent students of either of the above schools sometimes argue in favor of their own respective realization, but those who are perfect seers of the Absolute Truth know well that the above three features of the one Absolute Truth are different perspective views seen from different angles of vision.
As it is explained in the first çloka of the First Chapter of the Bhägavatam, the Supreme Truth is self-sufficient, cognizant and free from the illusion of relativity. In the relative world the knower is different from the known, but in the Absolute Truth both the knower and the known are one and the same thing. In the relative world the knower is the living spirit or superior energy, whereas the known is inert matter or inferior energy. Therefore, there is a duality of inferior and superior energy, whereas in the absolute realm both the knower and the known are of the same superior energy. There are three kinds of energies of the supreme energetic. There is no difference between the energy and energetic, but there is a difference of quality of energies. The absolute realm and the living entities are of the same superior energy, but the material world is inferior energy. The living being in contact with the inferior energy is illusioned, thinking he belongs to the inferior energy. Therefore there is the sense of relativity in the material world. In the Absolute there is no such sense of difference between the knower and the known, and therefore everything there is absolute.

(Srimad Bhagavatam 1:2:11.txt and purport)

Such is our fate
by Sajjan Priya Krishna dasa

We all know that Human life is very rare to obtain but still we do not understand the seriousness of devotional service and tend to procrastinate it.There is a nice story told by His Divine Grace Bhakti Siddhanta Saraswati Prabhupada in this regard.

Kaamini Mohan was a very lazy man especially for spiritual activities. He was very much addicted to the comforts of his home. One day his friend asked him. "O Kaamini Mohan ! Let us both go and visit a sadhu. A great personality has come to Sridham Mayapur and he is preaching very nice transcendental subject matters. Your life will be fulfilled upon hearing his instructions." Kaamini Mohan was very reluctant. Then his friend tried to allure Kaamini Mohan, saying, " By the way, there is a great funfair at the bank of Kuliya. It is full of recreations and amusements. So let us go and visit the fair". Kaamini Mohan immediately agreed to visit the funfair at Kuliya for some enjoyment. The friend's plan was to take Kaaminimohan to the bank of Kuliya and then it would be possible for him to take him across the Ganges to Sridham Mayapur. Arriving at the bank of Kuliya, Kaaminimohan enjoyed the funfair for a while.

Then his friend told him, "Just across the river is Sridham Mayapur. Let us go and visit the holy dhaama. There you will find the birthplace of Lord Chaitanyadeva, tomb of Chand Kazi, the great lake of Ballaal Sen and many other places of interest".

Kamini Mohan realized now that his friend had become almost determined to take him across the river for a visit to the holy dhama. So he made a counter-plan and said, "My dear friend, I am very afraid of crossing the river. I am in fact not at all used to traveling on a boat, it gives me nausea, dizziness, I become extremely afraid of drowning and palpitations start immediately. This is rainy season, but in winter, when the river will become dry, then we can easily walk down the river without the help of any boat. At that time I will definitely visit Sri Mayapur and all its interesting places.

Listening to Kaamini Mohan's plea his friend told him " O my dear friend , you say you will cross the river when it will be dry. This is nothing but your insincerity and hypocrisy. The river will never be dry and you won't be able to cross it."

Conclusion of the story by His Divine Grace Srila Bhakti Siddhanta Swami Prabhupada:

"Many of us think that we may devote enough time for listening to transcendental preaching from some saintly person, after completing all our business in the field of our domestic material entanglements concerning our family members, their desires and wants, diseases and other things. But in fact these entanglements will never go. Devotional practices will never be  undertaken unless we make it point to start devotional practices immediately."

We all have this procrastinating tendency. It is referred by Lord Krishna in Gita 18.68 as dhirgha-sutri, ie., one who postpones the activity or take longer time to complete that activity which can be done very quickly. The reasons are three fold:

1. Our inherent lack of genuine interest in the activity (mainly devotional practices)
2. We keep thinking that we will live for a long time and there is enough time to do them.
3. We assume that till the end of our life we will be hale and healthy.

We can implement the following instructions of Pure devotees like Srila Prabhupada to make our lives successful:

1. Arise and do Mangala arati in the Brahma Muhurta and chant lovingly Krishna's names.
2. Study Srimad Bhagavatam seriously and meditate on the verses, applying them practically in our lives.
3. Work Hard for Lord Krishna in devotional service.
4. See the hand of Krishna in everything and every situation.
5. Do not be critical of others, and blame only yourselves for the mishaps in your life.
6. Be happy and peaceful in devotional service always.
7. BE LOVING IN YOUR DEALINGS WITH ALL - be united and cooperate with each other to further the holy name.
8. Be always aware that THIS WORLD IS A TEMPORARY SHELTER for us and we have to leave alone one day.

"IN EVERY TOWN AND VILLAGE the chanting of the Holy Name of Krishna shall be heard. This was the forecast made by Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu almost 500 years ago in India. Today, as the Hare Krishna Mantra -- Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare, Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare -- resounds in Bombay and New York, Nairobi and Sydney, and in Paris and Hong Kong, the prophecy of Lord Caitanya stands fulfilled. The universal import of this "Samkirtan Movement" (the congregational chanting of the Holy Names of the Lord) was expressed by Lord Caitanya as follows:

"Glory to the Sri Krishna Samkirtan which cleanses the heart of all the dust accumulated for years together. Thus the fire of conditional life, of repeated birth and death, is extinguished. The Samkirtan Movement is the prime benediction for humanity at large because it spreads the rays of the benediction Moon. It is the life of all transcendental knowledge, it increases the ocean of transcendental bliss, and it helps us to have a taste of the full nectar for which we are always anxious."

Agama Tantra and the Vaishnava Samskaras as a way of life:

Recently I was asked, "Don't you find it an inconvenience to always be checking to see when is the right time to do this or the best time for that?"

In simple terms my answer was and still is; if you go to the bus or railway station or airport it is probably an intelligent venture to enquire about the times and routes of vehicles than to just hope that one will be along soon, or one is going in your direction.

There are subtle influences in the Universe that, for thousands of years gone by, advanced cultures have honoured, respected and utilised. Before the corruption of the Vedik literatures by the Christian and Moslem invaders to India all these things were used; Ayurvedik Medicine; Vedik Astrology; etc. Today there's a rennaisance among many to revive these arts.

We have been trained and studied to be able to provide these services. See some of my sites:

"The religious principles taught by Mohammed and Jesus Christ are similar to the religious principles taught by Vaishnava sects. Buddhism and Jainism are similar to Saiva-dharma. This is scientific consideration of truths regarding religious principles. Those who consider their own religious principles as real dharma and others religious principles as irreligion or subreligion are unable to ascertain the truth due to being influenced by prejudice. Actually religious principles followed by people in general are different only due to the different qualifications of the practitioners, but the constitutional religious principles of all living entities are one." Blessing The Lumber Before Making Chariots For Puri's Jagannath Festival
http://news.webindia123.com/news/showdetails.asp?id=81865&cat=India

BHUBANESWAR, INDIA, May 12, 2005: Nearly a hundred traditional carpenters worshipped three big logs in Orissa's temple town of Puri in an annual ritual that precedes the carving out of three gigantic wooden chariots for the Jagannath festival in July. "We have already got the first lot of logs to begin work, the rest will come phase wise," temple official Bhaskar Mishra told IANS. As every year, the wooden logs arrived in the temple town, 56 km from here, on the auspicious day of Akshay Tritiya Wednesday. "The carpenters worship them before beginning work on the chariots as part of tradition." The temple administration arranges over 1,000 big wooden logs and the construction work goes on for two months. The carpenters are those who have inherited the craft from their forefathers. A senior priest of the temple touched the logs with a golden axe and offered ceremonial prayers. A fire ritual was also performed on the road where the logs have been kept. Now carpenters can begin cutting logs to make the chariots, the official said. The temple organizes a grand festival every year on the auspicious day of Asadha Dutiya when the three gigantic chariots of Lord Jagannath, his brother Balabhadra and sister Subhadra roll out from the 12th century temple to another shrine called Gundicha, located one and a half kilometers away, in a procession. After nine days, the procession is reversed and the deities are taken back to their primary residence. Hundreds of thousands of people from all over the world gather to watch and take part in the procession. The festival is known as Ratha Yatra and will start July 8 this year, the temple official said.

Delhi given 1 week to take cows off roads
http://www.hindu.com/thehindu/holnus/001200505020344.htm?headline=Delhi~given~1~week~to~take~cows~off~roads

New Delhi, May 2. (Observer News Service): Armed with stun guns and large nets, officials will be out on the streets of the Indian capital in their hundreds this week as the capital gets tough in its mission to eradicate stray cattle.

The problem of New Delhi's rampaging cow population has become so severe that the High Court has issued city authorities with a one-week ultimatum to clear the streets of illegally roaming animals.

The crackdown is likely to end in violence as the owners of the city's 3,500 illegal street dairies fiercely resist all attempts to round up the beasts.

Although tourists are charmed by the sight of traffic brought to a standstill by cows grazing on the city's highways, Delhi's residents are increasingly disgusted by the disruption and danger that cattle pose.

Almost every week new stories of their savagery hit the front pages. Last February, a retired railway official and a maid were gored to death by a wild bull, and in March a Hindu priest was attacked and killed by a cow.

Despite a two-year clean-up campaign, officials estimate 32,000 cows remain. Failure to solve the problem led to this week's court ultimatum.

Last Thursday, April 28, Chief Justice BC Patel ordered the head of the New Delhi Municipal Council and other senior officials to appear in court `if the problem of stray cattle is not solved within a week'.

Officials' reluctance stems not from respect for the cow as a holy Hindu animal, but from fear of reprisals.

At the heart of the problem are the city's illegal dairies whose owners allow the cattle to graze untended during the day before rounding them up for milking in the evenings. These small businesses are often protected by powerful local interests, and have responded with gang violence to attempts to confiscate their animals.

`Our officials are beaten up whenever they go to catch stray cattle,' a lawyer for the municipal council told the court.

Officials have been attacked by mobs and their vehicles vandalised. The council asked the court for better police protection during this week's intensive campaign but its request was not granted.

The Amazing Banana
By Mr Breakfast
http://www.mrbreakfast.com/article.asp?articleid=15

A banana a day keeps the doctor away... and the dermatologist...and the psychologist... and if current research can be trusted... death. It seems there's almost no ailment that the banana can't help cure. The word "banan" is Arabic for finger.

The banana is unique among fruits. Rather than growing on trees, bananas come from the world's largest herb, Musa sapientium, which is directly related to the orchid family. They are believed to be the first fruit farmed by man. Available all year round, they are currently the most popular fruit in North America.

In February 2002, the International Banana Association reported that 60% of respondents in a recent study had a banana for breakfast at least once a week. The Mr Breakfast Institute of California (MBIC) recommends that bananas be included with breakfast at least twice a week.

According to a 2003 research project conducted by MBIC, bananas may aid in alleviating a very long list of ailments.

What Bananas Cure:
Anemia -- Because of their high iron content, bananas have the ability to stimulate hemoglobin production in the bloodstream.

Bone Mass Decay In Salt Eaters - A study at the University of California at San Francisco discovered that "The potassium [found in bananas] appears to counteract the bad effects of high-salt diets by preventing bones from decaying at a fast rate."

Constipation - If you're blocked up, stick a banana in your... mouth. The banana's high fiber content helps to restore normal bowel function. It also contain pectin, a water-absorbing nutrient which aids in firming your stool.

Depression - Like turkey, bananas contain tryptophan, a protein that converts to the neurotransmitter serotonin. Serotonin is instrumental in facilitating relaxation. Low levels of serotonin are believed to cause mood disorders including depression.

High Blood Pressure - The U.S. Food and Drug Association recently allowed the banana industry to make official claims that bananas reduce the risk of blood pressure problems.

Nervousness - Bananas are high in the B-complex vitamins, which are known to have a calming effect on the nervous system.

Strokes -- A study of 5,600 people revealed that those with the lowest intakes of potassium were 50% more likely to suffer a stroke. The New England Journal of Medicine reported that adding banana to your regular diet can cut the risk of death by stoke by as much as 40%.

Ugliness - The Body Shop uses some 250,000 bananas each year in the manufacture of its beauty products. In Central America, mashed bananas are used to relieve dry skin. Other homespun banana beauty treatments include exfoliating masks (blend mashed bananas with cosmetic clay), hair conditioner (combine mashed banana with a few drops of almond oil) and hand moisturizing lotion (mash a banana with 2 pats of butter).
Numerous other conditions are said to be cured by bananas by old wives, if not yet by scientists. Consider using bananas to relieve hangovers (blend with milk and honey), heartburn, morning sickness, mosquito bites and warts (apply the inside of peel to irritated skin).

The Oxford English Dictionary recognizes the term "going bananas" as a comical series of actions associated with moneys picking bananas. But the only comical monkey in these days of modern science is a fool who doesn't eat bananas.

Kerala's Premier Temple Revokes Dress Code
http://www.dailypioneer.com/indexn12.asp?main_variable=STATES&file_name=state18%2Etxt&counter_img=18

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, KERALA, INDIA, May 12, 2005: The Guruvayoor Temple, India's second-richest shrine after Tirumala Tirupathi Devasthanam (TTD) has revoked the new dress code it introduced last month following pressure from devotees. Temple rules introduced in April said that for security reasons, men would have to enter the sanctum without their shirts. Earlier, male devotees were allowed to take off their shirts and sling it over their shoulders. Another temple order banning children above the age of five from wearing short pants has also been withdrawn after protests from devotees. Though female devotees have been demanding the right to wear dresses of their choice, the temple authorities continue to insist that they either wear saris or pavadas (long skirts) within the complex. Pilgrims from other parts of the country have registered complaints about the uncomfortable dress code for women, but for the moment, the status quo remains.

DNA Study: Europeans Arrived Via India
v
NEW YORK, USA, May 13, 2005: By studying the DNA of an ancient people in Malaysia, a team of geneticists says it has illuminated many aspects of how modern humans migrated from Africa. The geneticists say there was only one migration of modern humans out of Africa; that it took a southern route to India, southeast Asia and Australia; and that it consisted of a single band of hunter-gatherers, probably just a few hundred people strong. Because these events occurred in the last Ice Age, when Europe was at first too cold for human habitation, the researchers say, it was populated only later, not directly from Africa but as an offshoot of the southern migration via India. The people of this offshoot would presumably have trekked back through the lands that are now India and Iran to reach the Near East and Europe.

The findings depend on analysis of mitochondrial DNA, a type of genetic material inherited solely through the female line. They are reported today in Science by a team of geneticists led by Dr. Vincent Macaulay of the University of Glasgow. Everyone in the world can be placed on a single family tree, in terms of their mitochondrial DNA, because everyone has inherited that piece of DNA from a single woman, the mitochondrial Eve, who lived some 200,000 years ago, states this article. There were many other women in that ancient population. But over the generations, one mitochondrial DNA replaced all the others through the process known as genetic drift. With the help of mutations that have built up on the one surviving copy, geneticists can arrange people in lineages and estimate the time of origin of each lineage. With this approach, Dr. Macaulay's team calculates that the emigration from Africa occurred 65,000 years ago, pushed along the coasts of India and southeast Asia and reached Australia by 50,000 years ago, the date of the earliest known archaeological site there.

The Malaysian people whom the geneticists studied are the Orang Asli. the term means "original men" in Malay. They are probably descended from this first migration, because they have several ancient mitochondrial DNA lineages that are found nowhere else, continues the article. These lineages are 42,000 to 63,000 years old, the geneticists say. For the full article, click on "source" above.
