The 108th ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION
of the appearance of
His Divine Grace
A.C. BHAKTIVEDANTA SWAMI PRABHUPADA
http://www.prabhupada108.net/

1896 – 2004

Founder Acarya of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness

Celebrated By

The International Society for Krishna Consciousness

The year beginning on Prabhupada's Vyasa Puja September 6th, 2004, and ending with his Vyasa Puja on August 28, 2005 marks the 108th anniversary of his birth. While everyone honors 100th anniversaries, Vaisnavas place great significance on the 108th anniversary, because 108 is a special number. Krsna enjoys with 108 principal gopis (cowherd girls), there are 108 Upanishads, and a round of japa on beads is 108 Hare Krsna mantras. ISKCON has created a special opportunity to glorify Srila Prabhupada on his 108th birthday and throughout the year afterwards. ISKCON's governing body commissioners in their annual meeting this year passed the following resolution.

Whereas: The 108th anniversary of Srila Prabhupada's appearance can bring special inspiration to the devotee community by glorifying Srila Prabhupada.
Whereas: H.H. Lokanath Swami was successful in performing the service of Srila Prabhupada's Centennial Global Minister.

Resolved: ISKCON will make the celebration of Srila Prabhupada's 108th appearance anniversary year a highlight of its activities until Vyasa Puja 2005. H.H. Lokanath Swami will take up the service of global coordinator for this project.

In 1996 ISKCON celebrated Srila Prabhupada's Centennial.  Participation in events far exceeded expectations.  Throughout the Centennial year, followers of Srila Prabhupada made extraordinary efforts to spread his glories world wide by inundating their countries, states, and cities with the holy name of Krsna, Krsna prasadam, and Prabhupada's books.  Temples world wide joined in celebrating many spectacular special events.  Streets were named in Prabhupada's honor, and several biographies about him were published.  There were also many wonderful special achievements and offerings by individuals and groups.  but why was the Centennial so successful?  We could only conclude that it was because Krsna wanted to glorify Srila Prabhupada.  Krsna wanted to show the world that He is know as bhaktanama mana vardhanah, "He who enhances the reputation of His devotees."
Srila Prabhupada's teachings, which continue to be felt throughout all parts of ISKCON, are the universal inspiration for the 108 celebration.  All initiated devotees and all followers of Srila Prabhupada have a high level of awareness, appreciation, and remembrance of him.  They feel connected with him as their siksa guru, accepting as essential the teaching he gave in his books.  Inspired by his powerful presence, they follow his instructions in their own lives and are able to bring others to follow them too.
The celebration of Srila Prabhupada's 108th anniversary will focus on a series of public events.  most of the international events that were so successful in 1996 will be held again.  The events will bring about a heightened appreciation for Srila Prabhupada and his movement in the public and increase ISKCON's member's awareness of being part of a united worldwide movement.
The 108th Celebration is not limited to events.  The spirit of the Celebration is to encourage each ISKCON devotee, member and follower to make at least one personal offering to Srila Prabhupada during the year in one or more of the following areas:
1. Help spread Srila Prabhupada's mission by expanding the congregation, distributing books and chanting the holy name, especially at 108 events.
2. Dedicate oneself to glorifying Srila Prabhupada by personally meaningful special achievement during the 108th year.
3. Build personal internal strength by commitment to improving both personal spiritual standards and practices and those of your community.
The 108th Celebration is a great time to introduce the whole world to Srila Prabhupada and his mission.  Let us all take seriously this very special opportunity, and wholeheartedly glorify Srila Prabhupada.

Srimad Bhagavad Gita AS IT IS

Bhagavad Gita:  Chapter 2 - Contents of the Gita Summarized

TEXT 69

                         ya nisa sarva-bhutanam
                         tasyam jagarti samyami
                         yasyam jagrati bhutani
                          sa nisa pasyato muneh

WORD FOR WORD

   ya--what; nisa--is night; sarva--all; bhutanam--of living entities; tasyam--in that; jagarti--is wakeful; samyami--the self-controlled; yasyam--in which; jagrati--are awake; bhutani--all beings; sa--that is; nisa--night; pasyatah--for the introspective; muneh--sage.

TRANSLATION

What is night for all beings is the time of awakening for the self-controlled; and the time of awakening for all beings is night for the introspective sage.

PURPORT by HDG Srila A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupad:

There are two classes of intelligent men. One is intelligent in material activities for sense gratification, and the other is introspective and awake to the cultivation of self-realization. Activities of the introspective sage, or thoughtful man, are night for persons materially absorbed. Materialistic persons remain asleep in such a night due to their ignorance of self-realization  The introspective sage remains alert in the night of the  materialistic men. The sage feels transcendental pleasure in the gradual advancement of spiritual culture, whereas the man in  materialistic activities, being asleep to self-realization, dreams of varieties of sense pleasure, feeling sometimes happy and sometimes distressed in his sleeping condition. The introspective man is always indifferent to materialistic happiness and distress. He goes on with his self-realization activities undisturbed by material reactions.

Prabhupada Uvacha:
(here's some nectar, sometimes it comes in the form of Srutakirti prabhu's diary, other times from Govinda dasi's diary, Hari Sauri prabhu's Transcendental Diary, or sometimes from a letter, or other related source, but still nectar...)

Just make the point of attachment Krsna

For an ordinary man, a life void of family affairs is almost unthinkable. Thus, Prahlada Maharaja's instructions to develop detachment from worldly affairs are very difficult to appreciate except by those with a very broad understanding and a genuine desire to seek out the real meaning of life.

Sitting on his asana during class, the perfect representative of the Gosvamis, Srila Prabhupada explained how painless this process can be by simply directing the inherent tendency to form bonds back towards Krsna. "This is bhakti process. Not that we have to bring a separate attachment. It has to be cleansed. That is described in the Narada-pancaratra: sarvopadhi-vinirmuktam tat-paratvena nirmalam, hrsikena hrsikesa sevanam bhaktir uttamam. Consciousness is there, attachment is there, but it is being covered by so many designations... . Just like we have got feeling for raising children; attachment, that is attachment.

"So what Mother Yasoda is doing? She is attached to Krsna, and that is Vrndavana. The same thing in otherwise: Vrndavana life means all attachment to Krsna. Mother Yasoda is attached to Krsna, Nanda Maharaja is attached to Krsna, the cowherd boys are attached to Krsna, the cows and calves are attached to Krsna, Radharani is attached to Krsna, the trees are attached to Krsna, the flowers are attached to Krsna, the water is attached to Krsna. That is Vrndavana. Vrndavana means the central attachment is Krsna. That is Vrndavana.

"So if you can create that central attachment for Krsna, then it is Vrndavana. Then you can create Vrndavana anywhere. Any family, any society, any country -- just make the point of attachment Krsna, and it is Vrndavana. That is required. That is the Krsna consciousness movement."

Prabhupada: Yes. The mind is there. Everyone knows, you have got mind, I have got mind. But can you see the mind? Can you see the intelligence?

Guest (1): These are something abstract, you know.

Prabhupada: No, not abstract. These are material. You have no eyes to see.

Guest (1): Well, at present, we can, we have got three different methods of studying intelligence starting from six months onward up to the adult.

Prabhupada: Anyway, you accept. That is my point. Now you are studying, you accept. That means you accept there is intelligence. So besides this material body, gross material body, there is a subtle body. Subtle body. Just like besides your coat, there is a shirt, or there is a ganjee (?). Similarly, the soul is covered by the subtle body and the gross body. What is known as death, that is annihilation of the gross body. The subtle body remains there. And the subtle body carries him as he desires. The subtle body carries him to a place where he can again grow another material body according to the desire of the mind.

Guest (1): You mean the subtle body or the soul, the same thing?

Prabhupada: No, soul is different. Soul is different. Soul is finer than intelligence. These things are explained in the Bhagavad-gita.

indriyani parany ahur
indriyebhyah param manah
manasas tu para buddhir
yo buddheh paratas tu sah

 [Bg. 3.42]

First of all, gross understanding. This body means the senses. Indriyani. Those who are animals, they are thinking this is all. But they do not understand that these indriyas are being controlled by the mind. If one's mind is, what is called, distorted, then the indriyas cannot work. That is madman. You try to cure the mental disease just to bring him in proper position to control the senses. Otherwise, he does not know how to control the senses. Therefore the controller of the senses is the mind. And above the mind there is intelligence. And above the intelligence there is soul. So we cannot see even the mind, intelligence and ego. And how we can see the soul? The soul has got his magnitude. And without understanding, without education about the soul, about the spirit soul, any other understanding, that is animal understanding. (pause) Give him prasada.

Guest (4) (English woman): Could I ask please, if prana is the life force, isn't it? Is it the prana is the life force, isn't it?

Pradyumna: Says like prana is the life force.

Guest (4): Is it in different parts of the body?

Prabhupada: These are air. Prana, in the prana, air, the soul floats. Therefore the controlling the air is called pranayama. That is yogic process.

Guest (4): Thank you.

Prabhupada: Prana is a life air which carries the soul. It is very small, atomic. And not our men. Give her. She's answered. (laughs) Give her one.

Guest (4): Thank you.

Prabhupada: Give her one, that girl. Give all. (Bengali) You are a lawyer. (Bengali) That is not your business. You must know it.

Guest (3): (Bengali)

Prabhupada: That's a good qualification.

Guest (3): No.

Prabhupada: Why should you be bad qualified? (Bengali) Logic, it is logical. Tatha dehantara-praptih [Bg. 2.13]. Where is the illogic. You have passed your childhood body, you have passed your youth-hood body, you are in a different body. Although you are in a different body, you are existing. What better logic you can discover? You cannot discover any better logic than this. Don't accuse that we are illogical, don't accuse. We are logical, completely logical. But we have got brain to understand. Yes. Logic, you can put forward, but one must have the brain to understand it. If one is dull like stone, how he can understand logic? This is very clear logic. Tatha dehantara-praptir dhiras tatra na... [Bg. 2.13], dhirah, one who is sober, coolheaded, he understands. "Yes, it is all right."

Guest (2): I have taken quite a lot of your time, if you'll excuse me.

Prabhupada: No, my time is for this purpose, provided you kindly take it. But if you don't take it, then of course, that is a different thing. My time is spent for... I have dedicated my life for this purpose. I am touring all over the world giving this knowledge. It is sound logic. If you don't accept, you must give better logic, what you know. Don't think we are going under sentiment. Don't think like that. We have got sound logic.

SRILA PRABHUPADA'S QUOTE OF THE DAY

Sometimes there will be a little misunderstanding

between Godbrothers. That is even going on

amongst liberated souls. What is important is that

everyone must engage in Krishna's service under

the direction of the spiritual master.

Quotes from Shastra - scriptures

"So far as your question about controversy amongst the disciples of Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Goswami Maharaja, that is a fact. But this controversy is not material. Just like in a national program, different political parties are sometimes in conflict and make propaganda against each other, but their central point is always service to the country. Similarly, amongst the disciples of Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati there may be some controversy, but the central point is how to preach the mission of His Divine Grace. If the central point is fixed up then there is no harm in such controversy. Every individual being must have his opinion; that is the significance of individuality, but all such differences of opinions must coincide in Krishna. In the battlefield of Kuruksetra were Arjuna and Bhisma who were fighting with one another, and because Krishna was on the side of Arjuna, sometimes Bhisma pierced the body of Krishna also with arrows. But still they remained the greatest devotees of the Lord, and Krishna accepted the friendship of Arjuna just as He accepted the inimical arrows of Bhisma in the same loving spirit. So you do not be disturbed by such controversial points. Better you engage your mind very seriously in the matter of the service entrusted upon you. That will make you progressive in Krishna Consciousness." - Letter to Mandali Bhadra - Los Angeles 28 July 1969

yaù—he who; sva-anubhävam—self-assimilated (experienced); akhila—all around; çruti—the Vedas; säram—cream; ekam—the only one; adhyätma—transcendental; dépam—torchlight; atititérñatäm—desiring to overcome; tamaù andham—deeply dark material existence; saàsäriëäm—of the materialistic men; karuëayä—out of causeless mercy; äha—said; puräëa—supplement to the Vedas; guhyam—very confidential; tam—unto him; vyäsa-sünum—the son of Vyäsadeva; upayämi—let me offer my obeisances; gurum—the spiritual master; munénäm—of the great sages.

TRANSLATION
Let me offer my respectful obeisances unto him [Çuka], the spiritual master of all sages, the son of Vyäsadeva, who, out of his great compassion for those gross materialists who struggle to cross over the darkest regions of material existence, spoke this most confidential supplement to the cream of Vedic knowledge, after having personally assimilated it by experience. (Srimad Bhagavatam 1:2.3.)

In this prayer, Çréla Süta Gosvämé practically summarizes the complete introduction of Çrémad-Bhägavatam. Çrémad-Bhägavatam is the natural supplementary commentary on the Vedänta-sütras. The Vedänta-sütras, or the Brahma-sütras, were compiled by Vyäsadeva with a view to presenting just the cream of Vedic knowledge. Çrémad-Bhägavatam is the natural commentary on this cream. Çréla Çukadeva Gosvämé was a thoroughly realized master of the Vedänta-sütra, and consequently he also personally realized the commentary, Çrémad-Bhägavatam. And just to show his boundless mercy upon bewildered materialistic men who want to cross completely over nescience, he recited for the first time this confidential knowledge.

There is no point in arguing that a materialistic man can be happy. No materialistic creature—be he the great Brahmä or an insignificant ant—can be happy. Everyone tries to make a permanent plan for happiness, but everyone is baffled by the laws of material nature. Therefore the materialistic world is called the darkest region of God's creation. Yet the unhappy materialists can get out of it simply by desiring to get out. Unfortunately they are so foolish that they do not want to escape. Therefore they are compared to the camel who relishes thorny twigs because he likes the taste of the twigs mixed with blood. He does not realize that it is his own blood and that his tongue is being cut by the thorns. Similarly, to the materialist his own blood is as sweet as honey, and although he is always harassed by his own material creations, he does not wish to escape. Such materialists are called karmés. Out of hundreds of thousands of karmés, only a few may feel tired of material engagement and desire to get out of the labyrinth. Such intelligent persons are called jïänés. The Vedänta-sütra is directed to such jïänés. But Çréla Vyäsadeva, being the incarnation of the Supreme Lord, could foresee the misuse of the Vedänta-sütra by unscrupulous men, and, therefore, he personally supplemented the Vedänta-sütra with the Bhägavata Puräëa. It is clearly said that this Bhägavatam is the original commentary on the Brahma-sütras. Çréla Vyäsadeva also instructed the Bhägavatam to his own son, Çréla Çukadeva Gosvämé, who was already at the liberated stage of transcendence. Çréla Çukadeva realized it personally and then explained it. By the mercy of Çréla Çukadeva, the Bhägavata-vedänta-sütra is available for all those sincere souls who want to get out of material existence.

Çrémad-Bhägavatam is the one unrivaled commentary on Vedänta-sütra. Çrépäda Çaìkaräcärya intentionally did not touch it because he knew that the natural commentary would be difficult for him to surpass. He wrote his Çäréraka-bhäñya, and his so-called followers deprecated the Bhägavatam as some "new" presentation. One should not be misled by such propaganda directed against the Bhägavatam by the Mäyäväda school. From this introductory çloka, the beginning student should know that Çrémad-Bhägavatam is the only transcendental literature meant for those who are paramahaàsas and completely freed from the material disease called malice. The Mäyävädés are envious of the Personality of Godhead despite Çrépäda Çaìkaräcärya's admission that Näräyaëa, the Personality of Godhead, is above the material creation. The envious Mäyävädé cannot have access to the Bhägavatam, but those who are really anxious to get out of this material existence may take shelter of this Bhägavatam because it is uttered by the liberated Çréla Çukadeva Gosvämé. It is the transcendental torchlight by which one can see perfectly the transcendental Absolute Truth realized as Brahman, Paramätmä and Bhagavän.  (Srimad Bhagavatam 1:2.3. Srila A.C. "IN EVERY TOWN AND VILLAGE the chanting of the Holy Name of Krishna shall be heard. This was the forecast made by Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu almost 500 years ago in India. Today, as the Hare Krishna Mantra -- Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare, Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare -- resounds in Bombay and New York, Nairobi and Sydney, and in Paris and Hong Kong, the prophecy of Lord Caitanya stands fulfilled. The universal import of this "Samkirtan Movement" (the congregational chanting of the Holy Names of the Lord) was expressed by Lord Caitanya as follows:

"Glory to the Sri Krishna Samkirtan which cleanses the heart of all the dust accumulated for years together. Thus the fire of conditional life, of repeated birth and death, is extinguished. The Samkirtan Movement is the prime benediction for humanity at large because it spreads the rays of the benediction Moon. It is the life of all transcendental knowledge, it increases the ocean of transcendental bliss, and it helps us to have a taste of the full nectar for which we are always anxious."

Agama Tantra and the Vaishnava Samskaras as a way of life:

Recently I was asked, "Don't you find it an inconvenience to always be checking to see when is the right time to do this or the best time for that?"

In simple terms my answer was and still is; if you go to the bus or railway station or airport it is probably an intelligent venture to enquire about the times and routes of vehicles than to just hope that one will be along soon, or one is going in your direction.

There are subtle influences in the Universe that, for thousands of years gone by, advanced cultures have honoured, respected and utilised. Before the corruption of the Vedik literatures by the Christian and Moslem invaders to India all these things were used; Ayurvedik Medicine; Vedik Astrology; etc. Today there's a rennaisance among many to revive these arts.

We have been trained and studied to be able to provide these services. See some of my sites:

"The religious principles taught by Mohammed and Jesus Christ are similar to the religious principles taught by Vaishnava sects. Buddhism and Jainism are similar to Saiva-dharma. This is scientific consideration of truths regarding religious principles. Those who consider their own religious principles as real dharma and others religious principles as irreligion or subreligion are unable to ascertain the truth due to being influenced by prejudice. Actually religious principles followed by people in general are different only due to the different qualifications of the practitioners, but the constitutional religious principles of all living entities are one." Delhi Court Calls For Cattle Roundup
http://www.hindu.com/thehindu/holnus/001200505020344.htm

NEW DELHI, INDIA, May 2, 2005: Officials have estimated that 32,000 cows are allowed to roam the streets of New Delhi at will. Tourists are amused when traffic is brought to a halt by grazing cows. However, residents of the city know the dangers. The news release explains, "Almost every week new stories of their savagery hit the front pages. Last February, a retired railway official and a maid were gored to death by a wild bull, and in March a Hindu priest was attacked and killed by a cow." As a result, the High Court (Chief Justice BC Patel) ordered the head of the New Delhi Municipal Council and other senior officials to solve the problem. However, the officials are faced with an even larger problem. The article explains, "At the heart of the problem are the city's illegal dairies whose owners allow the cattle to graze untended during the day before rounding them up for milking in the evenings. These small businesses are often protected by powerful local interests, and have responded with gang violence to attempts to confiscate their animals. The crackdown is likely to end in violence as the owners of the city's 3,500 illegal street dairies fiercely resist all attempts to round up the beasts." A lawyer for the municipal council told the court, "Our officials are beaten up whenever they go to catch stray cattle. Officials have been attacked by mobs and their vehicles vandalised. We are asking for better police protection during this week's intensive campaign." The request was not granted.

EU to protect traditional medicine from piracy
http://www.bloglines.com/blog/SanjayGarg?id=1171<?xml:namespace prefix = ons = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office"/>

May 17, 2005

By Sanjay Garg

NEW DELHI: The European Patent Office (EPO) has, in principle, agreed to make a conscious effort to block anyone from stealing patents of India’s traditional knowledge in medicine.

This will ensure that instances like the patenting of turmeric’s medicinal property in the US, does not occur in the 30-member superstate. India had earlier spent $6m to bust the US patent on turmeric.

A non-disclosure agreement between the Union science and technology ministry and the EPO is expected soon, which will give EPO access to a digital database of at least 136,000 traditional Indian medicines.

EPO will protect this highly valuable information and refer it routinely while reviewing patent applications where the innovation is of botanical origin. This will make it easy for the EPO to reject patent requests where centuries-old knowledge is passed off as innovation.

The National Institute of Science Communication and Information Resources (NISCIR) under the science and technology ministry is developing the nearly one crore page digital database of Ayurveda, Siddha and Unani medicines.

This project of the department of Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani, Siddha and Homeopathy (Ayush) has been approved by the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP) and the draft agreement is now being vetted by the law ministry.

NISCIR is representing the government in talks with various patent offices, including those in the US, the UK, Japan and Sweden. Once the agreement with the EPO is signed, it will be able to strongly persuade the US patent office, which, according to a ’03 study, has inappropriately granted nearly 380 patents involving India’s traditional knowledge and biological resources.

Sri Parthasarathy Temple Introduces Automated Foot Washing System
http://newstodaynet.com/29apr/rf12.htm

CHENNAI, INDIA, April 29, 2005: Necessity is the mother of invention. A common cliched adage used by all; but it comes handy to report on the feet wash system introduced by officials of Sri Parthasarathy Swami Temple in Triplicane on the lines of the same facility at Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam. This feet wash system was launched this morning at the temple by T. Pitchandi, Commissioner, Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) board in connection with the ongoing Brahmotsavam festival of the temple. It is basically a section of hallway with water flowing through it into which the devotees must step as they approach. At Tirupati, the devotees can cleanse themselves before they enter the temple near the door of the sanctum sanctorum of the presiding deity Lord Parthasarathy. The water used for the feet wash system will be fetched from the temple borewell and collected in a separate over head tank with a capacity of 1,600 liters said P. Raja, joint commissioner, HR&CE board. The water will be purified, recycled and reused for the same purpose, aiming at little wastage of water to maintain the sanctum sanctorum clean. The temple was already crowded with the devotees who had assembled for the temple car festival on the seventh day of the Brahmotsavam.

Tirupati Temple To Air Condition Huge Waiting Area for Pilgrims

TIRUPATI, INDIA, May 20, 2005: In a move that would bring relief to thousands of common devotees who wait for hours together to worship Lord Venkateswara at the famous hill shrine in nearby Tirumala, the temple administration today decided to air-condition the entire giant second queue complex. The decision to install air conditioners on a large scale in all the 23 compartments of the crescent-shaped massive complex close to the temple was taken at the meeting of the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams Board for the benefit of the devotees thronging the temple from across the country and abroad, its chairman, T. Subbirami Reddy, told reporters. Each compartment had the capacity of providing shelter for at least 600 devotees and the air-conditioning work at all compartments would be completed in six months, he said. The board also decided the install plasma TVs or LCD screens in the complex to show uninterrupted Hindu mythological stories and also devotional programs connected to the temple for the benefit of waiting devotees.

McDonald's To Pay US$10 Million In French Fry Settlement
http://www.hindu.com/thehindu/holnus/003200505221465.htm

CALIFORNIA, May 22, 2005: Fast food giant McDonald's will pay US$10 million to 24 groups as part of a settlement of lawsuits charging that it had misled Hindu and vegetarian consumers by "wrongly describing" its French fries, containing beef additive for flavouring, as vegetarian. The 24 groups were approved by a US court, after a Seattle Lawyer Harish Bharti, filed a class-action lawsuit against the company, accusing the chain of deception in its claims of cooking fries in 100 per cent vegetable oil. The maximum compensation of $1.4 million, or 14 per cent of the award, was for Vegetarian Resource Group, followed by $1 million for North American Vegetarian Society. Other groups include Muslim Consumer Group for Food Products ($100,000), International American Gita Society ($50,000), Hindu Heritage Endowment ($250,000), Council of Hindu Temples of North America ($200,000), Guru Harkrishan Institute of Sikh Studies ($50,000), Hindu Students Council ($500,000), Jewish Community Centres Association ($200,000) and Tufts University ($850,000). The funds are intended to provide education and research into a healthy vegetarian diet as well as religious dietary laws and restrictions. Muslim and Jewish groups were included because the undisclosed beef additive was neither halal or kosher.

From the Great Favor, a Harmonist article, by Shrila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura Prabhupada:

"A chanter of the Kirtan of Hari is necessarily the uncompromising enemy of wordliness and hypocrisy. As chanter of the Kirtan of Hari, it is the constant function to dispell all misconceptions by the preaching of the truth in the most unambiguous form without any respect of person, place or time. That form is to be adopted which is least likely to be misunderstood. It is his bounden duty to oppose clearly and frankly any person who tries to deceive and harm himself and other people by misrepresenting the Truth due to malice or bonafide misunderstanding.

This will be possible if the chanter of Kirtan is always prepared to submit to be trodden by thoughtless people if any discomfort to himself will enable him to do good to his persecutors by chanting the Truth in the most unambiguous manner. If he is unwilling or afraid of considerations of self-respect or personal discomfort to chant the Kirtan under all circumstances he is unfit to be a preacher of the Absolute Truth. Humility implies perfect submission to the Truth and no sympathy for untruth. A person who entertains any partiality for untruth is unfit to chant the kirtan of Hari. Any clinging to untruth is opposed to the principle of humility born of absolute submission to the truth.

Those who serve the Truth at all time, by means of all their faculties, and have no hankering for the trivialities of this world, are always necessarily free from malice born of competing worldliness and are, therefore, fit to admonish those who are actively engaged in harming themselves and others by the method of opposing or misrepresenting the Truth in order to attain rewards of such policy in the shape of a perpetuation of the state of misery and ignorance. The method which is employed by the servant of the good preceptor for preventing such misrepresentation of the truth is a part and parcel of the truth itself.

It may not always be pleasing to the diseased susceptibilities of deluded minds and may even be denounced by them as a malicious act with which they are only too familiar, but the words of truth from the lips of a loyal and humble servant of Hari possess such beneficent power that all effort to suppress or obstruct them only serves to vindicate to impartial minds the necessity of complete submission to the Absolute Truth as the only cure of the disease of wordliness. Humility that is employed in the unambiguous service of the Truth is necessarily and qualitatively different from its perverted prototype which is practised by the cunning people of this world for gaining their worldly ends. The professors of pseudo-humility have reason to be afraid of the preachings of the servants of Hari -- one of whose duties is to expose the enormous possibility of mischief that is possessed by the forms of so-called spiritual conduct -- when they are taken to task for serving the untruth.

Shrila Saccidananda Bhaktivinoda Thakura quotes:

Patrikara Uddesya, Sajjana Tosani:

"In the name of bhakti in many places people are engaged in illicit or anti-bhakti activities in the name of practicing bhakti. If one does not expose those issues (cases) very clearly, then pure-bhakti will never be victorious or be established."

Bheka-dharana, Sajjana Tosani.

"One should compulsorily engage in endeavouring to trying to uplift the Vaisnava-dharma from the mud of contamination and trying to free it from all kinds of dauratmya (wrong ideas and practices)."

THE SELF-MADE MILLIONAIRE

In the plague in Calcutta in 1939, a lot of people were suffering.  So the city council, the municipality, declared that as many rats as you brought in you would get 5 paisa a rat.  Plague is caused by rats, so the council were proposing this.  One very poor man thought, "Here's my chance to get some money to eat."  He found one dead rat in the gutter, and he took it to the municipality who gave him five paise.  He invested that five paise in a piece of fruit.  He sold the fruit for fifteen paise, so he made a profit of fifteen paise.  With this fifteen paise he brought a mechanical piece which he sold for one rupee at the market.  With that one rupee he brought another type of mechanical piece and he made five rupees.  With this five rupees he invested in some cloth and made fifty rupees.  Like this, he went on and on, and eventually he became one of the biggest cloth merchants in India in the 1940's and 50's.  He has big wholesale stores all over India.  He became a millionaire, and the company symbol over the door was a dead rat.

MORAL - 1: The same principle applies to spiritual life.  Brahmins don't have a monopoly on spiritual life.  Everyone who is human, has not only the right but the responsibility to become spiritually advanced.  Atato brahma jijnasa.  So everyone can elevate oneself to the platform of a brahmana.
In Benares in India there was a yogi.  His business was that anyone who would go there, he immediately produced two or four rasagullas and offered him.  And many hundreds and thousands of educated men became his disciples simply because he could produce rasagullas, which are only four annas worth.

MORAL - 2: People want to see this jugglery.

UNITED STATES, October 20, 2004: Are you fascinated by the many things in life that cannot be scientifically explained? Do you seem to have a "sixth sense" that sometimes allows you to know what is going to happen? Do you sometimes feel so connected to nature that everything seems to be part of one living organism? To find out how spiritual you are, click on "source" above. The short test is adapted from a personality inventory devised by Washington University psychiatrist Robert Cloninger, author of "Feeling Good: The Science of Well-Being."

Vege update:
Social scientists and law enforcement officials have identified animal abuse as a symptom of emotional illness and a precursor to violent crimes against human beings. To allow individuals guilty of perpetrating such cruel acts to go unpunished or not sufficiently punished would be to sanction these horrific crimes and would permit them to go on to possibly commit violent crimes against humans.

The Animal Spirit Newsletter - Issue #2 -  4/21/03-4/27/03

Making Food Sacred - Offering our food to Krishna:
....excerpt from lecture by HDG Srila A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada - Srimad-Bhagavatam 1.3.1-3 -- San Francisco, March 28, 1968

The Vedic literature says like this, that God has no leg, no hand. Therefore the impersonalists take advantage of it. "Oh, here it is stated God has no legs, no hands." But the next line is, javana grhita: "He can accept everything which you offer Him in devotion."

Now how He can accept? If He has no hand, how He can accept things from us? That means He hasn't got a hand like us. His hand is different. Therefore even though He is situated in the spiritual world, which is far, far away from us, still, He says in the Bhagavad-gita, it is said,

patram puspam phalam toyam
yo me bhaktya prayacchati
tad aham bhakty-upahrtam
asnami prayatatmanah

Krsna says that "A little flower or little water or a little leaf, whatever My devotee offers Me in love and devotion, I accept it." And tad aham bhakty-upahrtam. "And because he has brought it with great devotion, therefore I eat." Tad aham bhakty-upahrtam asnami. Asnami means "I eat." Now you can say, "All right, I'll offer these fruits and flower to God, but it is the same. It is remaining. How He is eating?" But His eating is not like my eating, because He hasn't got a body like this. This body is material. If you bring me a plate of fruits, this body immediately swallows it. But He has got spiritual body. He eats... Simply as soon as He knows that you have offered it in devotion, He eats immediately.

Go here to follow the simple system for offering foodstuffs to the Lord
... and always with the Magic ingredient - Offer it to Krishna.....
... with L'n D (love and devotion)

Vege Meatballs and spaghetti

Ingredients:
1 box vital wheat gluten (found in bread section)
1 cup quaker oatmeal (from the canister) processed into flour
a few tablespoons tamari soy sauce in a quart of water (to boil)
Italian spices and seasonings ( 2 tsp basil, 1 tsp oregano, 1/2 tsp hing, 1 tsp garam masala, 1/2 tsp mint flakes)
tomato sauce  - paste
Olive oil
any pasta you want -  but spaghetti is good
toasted powdered nuts (optional)
parmasan cheese

Directions:
Combine vital wheat gluten with enough water to make a gummy mass. Boil the tamari water. Slice the gummy mass into small peices and boil them for a few minutes, or until they swell and are no longer sticky. Drain and cool the pieces and grind them in a cuisinart until the mass resembles cooked ground beef - mincemeat. Transfer to a bowl and add the oatmeal flour, italian seasonings, and salt and pepper to taste.

Make into balls and fry balls until crispy on the outside, then add to boiling tomato sauce mixed with enough water to cover all the balls. Simmer on low for an hour until alot of the water has cooked off. Cool balls slightly while you cook the pasta because they hold together better when they are not piping hot. Carefully remove balls to a serving bowl and reconstitute some of the sauce with water before serving. Serve over the pasta with the sauce on the side. You can use toasted powdered nuts in place of parmasan cheese as a topping.

Refrigerate leftover meatballs and use for meatball subs and sandwiches the next day. They are even better the next day and will keep in the fridge all week. After that, freeze for up to six months.

Serves: lots - double or triple it to serve more hahaha

Preparation time: not too long

Warm Crunchy Pistachio-coated Bananas with Honey and Raspberry Coulis

For a deliciously simple dessert try this combination of bananas, pistachios and fresh raspberries.

Serves 4
Ingredients:
180g/6¼oz roasted pistachio nuts, shelled
4 ripe bananas
1 tbsp icing (confectioners) sugar
480g/17oz raspberries
4 tbsp Honey

Method:
Preheat the oven to 200°C/400°F/Gas 6.
Roughly chop the pistachios and place them on a large plate.
Peel the bananas and cut them in half.
Roll the banana halves in the chopped pistachios, making sure they are evenly coated by slightly pressing them into the nuts.
Dust with some icing sugar and place on a non-stick baking sheet.
Bake the bananas for 4-5 minutes, until just tender and warm.
Meanwhile, to make the raspberry coulis, blend half of the raspberries with two tablespoons of honey until smooth.
Pass the mixture through a fine sieve to remove the pips.
Divide the bananas onto warm plates and drizzle with the rest of the honey.
Serve with the remaining raspberries arranged in a neat pyramid on the serving plates and raspberry coulis on the side.

Baked Semolina with Jam Sauce

I used to queue up for more when this pudding was being served up at school. It's not everyones favourite, but it is ideal for cold weather eating.

Serves 4
Ingredients:
425ml/15fl oz full fat milk
150ml/5fl oz double cream
25g/1oz butter
4 tbsp semolina
55g/2oz caster (fine granulated) sugar
For the jam sauce:
5 tbsp raspberry or strawberry jam
a handful of raspberries

Method:
Preheat the oven to 200°C/400°F/Gas 6.
Heat the milk, cream and butter together in a saucepan.
Sprinkle the semolina over the hot milk mixture and heat, stirring, until the milk boils and the mixture thickens.
Cook for a further 2-3 minutes, stirring, until the semolina becomes clear.
Keep stirring and remove from the heat. Stir in the caster sugar.
Pour the semolina mixture into a buttered ovenproof dish.
Bake the semolina for 30 minutes, until lightly browned.
Just before the pudding is ready make the jam sauce.
Sieve the jam into a saucepan. Add the raspberries and warm through gently.
Serve the semolina pudding with the warm jam sauce.

Fragole Fresche con Salsa di Fragole (Fresh Strawberries with Strawberry Sauce)

For those of you in the warmer climates that I'm presently missing, here's a quintessential summer berry dessert try this pretty and elegant strawberry concoction.

Serves 4
Ingredients:
450g/1lb strawberries, quartered
For the strawberry sauce:
20g/¾oz Butter
75g/2½oz caster (fine granulated) sugar
1 lemon quarter
200g/7¼oz strawberries, halved
To decorate:
sprigs of fresh mint
icing (confectioners) sugar (optional)

Method:
First make the sauce. Put the butter and caster sugar in a saucepan and cook over a gentle heat.
Spear the lemon quarter with a fork and use it to stir the butter and sugar until the butter has melted and the sugar has dissolved. Press the lemon with the fork to squeeze out all the juice into the butter mixture, then discard it.
Stir in the halved strawberries, then remove from the heat and push the mixture through a sieve. Leave to cool.
Spoon the sauce onto four serving plates, and then top with the fresh strawberries. Decorate with sprigs of mint and sprinkle with icing sugar. Serve.

Points of View
I don't know if Shel was actually a vegetarian or not, but he did do some pro-veg works like the following:

Thanksgiving dinner's sad and thankless,
Christmas dinner's dark and blue,
When you stop and try to see it
From the turkey's point of view.

Sunday dinner isn't funny
Easter feasts are just bad luck,
When you see it from the viewpoint
Of the chicken or the duck.

Oh, how I once loved tuna salad,
Pork and lobsters, lamb chops, too,
Till I stopped and looked at dinner
From the dinner's point of view.

Four Wives parable:
http://www.hknet.org.nz/4wives.pps

There was a religious lady that had to do a lot of traveling for her business, so naturally, she did a lot of flying. Flying made her extremely nervous, so she always took her Bible along with her to read since it helped relax her on the long flights.

One time, she was sitting next to a man. When he saw her pull out her Bible, he gave a little chuckle, smirked and went back to what he was doing.

After a while, he turned to her and asked, "You don't really believe all that stuff in there, do you?"

The lady replied, "Of course I do. It is the Bible."

He said, "Well, what about the guy that was swallowed by the whale?"

She replied, "Oh, Jonah. Yes, I believe that, it is in the Bible."

He asked, "Well, how do you suppose he survived all that time inside the whale?"

The lady said, "Well, I don't really know. I guess when I get to Heaven, I will ask him."

"What if he isn't in heaven?" the man asked sarcastically.

"Then you can ask him," replied the lady.

TEACHER:     "Jasbinda, how do you spell  'crocodile?'"

JASBINDA:   "K-R-O-K-O-D-A-I-L"

TEACHER:     "No, that's wrong"

JASBINDA:   "Maybe it's wrong to you, but you asked me how I spell it!"

While trying to teach morals at the Gurukul school the teacher gave an example for the children to think about and to reply with a possible answer:

Teacher : " George Washington not only chopped down his father's Cherry tree, but also admitted doing it.

Now do you know why his father didn't punish him ?"

One Student: "Was it because George still had the axe in is hand?"

Another Student: "Was it because the tree fell on his father and killed him?"

Another Student: "Was it because his father couldn't catch him?"

Another Student:  "Did George Washington have his army with him then???"

....the Gurukul teacher didn't punish the children either !!!!

Each evening bird lover Bill stood in his backyard hooting like an owl - and one night, an owl called back to him.

For a year, Bill and his feathered friend hooted back and forth. Bill even kept a log of the "conversation."

Just as Bill thought he was on the verge of a breakthrough in inter-species communication, his wife had a chat with next door neighbor, Tammy.

"My husband spends his nights...calling out to owls," said Bills wife.

"That's odd," Tammy replied. "So does my Doug."

Then it dawned on them.

Coffee Machine Instructions

Cousin Elly is the world's worst at getting instructions mixed up.

When she got married her husband bought her one of those fancy, electric coffee makers. It had all the latest gadgets on it.

The Salesman carefully explained how everything worked; how to plug it in, set the timer, go back to bed, and upon rising, the coffee is ready.

A few weeks later Elly was back in the store and the Salesman asked her how she liked the coffee maker.

"Wonderful!" she replied, "However, there's one thing I don't understand. Why do I have to go to bed every time I want to make a pot of coffee?"

Moral: See what drinking coffee does to you !!!!!!

Did you ever wonder?

A question asked to a gurukul kid about bowel movements in older people:

Q: What happens to your body as you age?

A: When you get old, so do your bowels and you get intercontinental.

Q: What does "varicose" mea n?
A: Nearby. (I do love this one...)

Q: Give the meaning of the term "Caesarean Section"
A: The Caesarean Section is a district in Rome .

Q: What does the word "benign" mean?'
A: Benign is what you will be after you be eight.

An Alsatian dog went to a telegram office, took out a blank form and wrote: "Woof, woof woof woof. Woof woof woof woof woof."

The clerk looked the paper and politely told the dog: "There are only nine words here. You could send another 'Woof' for the same price."

"But," the dog replied, "what sense would that make!"

Santasingh's mother walks into the kitchen and finds the daughter in law sitting at the table sobbing wildly.

"What's the problem?" she asks

She replies, "Santa called to wish me happy birthday.

"So why did that upset you?" she asks.

In response she wails, "He's been arrested."

Mother asks, "What was he charged with?"

"I don't know," she sobs.  "He just said he was calling me on his cell phone."

Teaching Prospects in the Kali yuga school systems

Being interviewed by the school administration, the eager teaching prospect said:

"Let me see if I've got this right.  You want me to go into that room with all those kids, and fill their every waking moment with a love for learning. And I'm supposed to instill a sense of pride in their ethnicity, modify their disruptive behavior, observe them for signs of abuse and even censor their T-shirt messages and dress habits.

You want me to wage a war on drugs and sexually transmitted diseases, check their backpacks for weapons of mass destruction, and raise their self esteem.  You want me to teach them patriotism, good citizenship, sportsmanship, fair play, how to register to vote, how to balance a checkbook, and how to apply for a job.

I am to check their heads for lice, maintain a safe environment, recognize signs of anti-social behavior, make sure all students pass the mandatory state exams, even those who don't come to school regularly or  complete any of their assignments.  Plus, I am to make sure that all of the students with handicaps get an equal education regardless of the extent of their mental or physical handicap. And I am to communicate regularly with the parents by letter, telephone, newsletter and report card.

All of this I am to do with just a piece of chalk, a computer, a few books, a bulletin board, a big smile AND on a starting salary that qualifies my family for food stamps!

You want me to do all of this and yet you expect me
..... NOT TO PRAY?"

I was teaching a life-skills class to my high school students one day, and we were discussing the various terms one might encounter in a restaurant. I asked, "What does 'a la carte' mean?"

"It means," one student answered, "you're in the wrong restaurant."

Albert T. Grande  in READER'S DIGEST

Mumbai to Pune
--------------

This happened about a month or two ago near Lonavala and even though it sounds like something out of the X-Files or from an Alfred Hitchcock movie... it's real!

This guy drives from Mumbai to Pune and decides not to take the new expressway as he wants to see the scenery. The inevitable happens and when he reaches the ghats his car breaks down - he's stranded miles from nowhere. Having no choice he starts walking on the side of the road, hoping to get a lift to the nearest human habitation. It's dark and raining and pretty soon he's wet and shivering. The night rolls on and no car goes by, the monsoon rains are so strong he can hardly see a few feet ahead of him.

Suddenly he sees a car coming towards him. It slows and then stops next to him - without thinking the guy opens the car's door and jumps in. Seated in the back, he leans forward to thank the person who had saved him when he realizes there is nobody behind the wheel!!! Even though there's no one in the front seat and no sound of any engine, the car starts moving slowly. The guy looks at the road ahead and sees a curve coming (remember, this is in the hills and there is a steep, steep drop beyond the curve).

Scared almost to death he starts to pray, begging the Lord for his life. He hasn't come out of shock, when just before he hits the curve, a hand appears through the window and moves the wheel! The car makes the curve safely and continues on the road to the next bend. The guy, now paralyzed in terror, watches how the hand appears every time they are before a curve and moves the steering wheel just enough to get the car around each bend.

Finally, the guy sees lights ahead. Gathering his courage he wrenches open the door of the silent, slowly moving car, scrambles out and runs as hard as he can towards the lights. It's a small town. Wet and in shock goes to a roadside dhaba, which is open, and asks for a drink. They find some hooch and give him a shot. And he starts telling whoever is in the dhabba about the horrible experience he's just been through. A silence envelops everybody when they realize the guy isn't drunk, and is really frightened - he's crying and shaking. So they give him more hooch and talk about what they should do, whether to call the police or find a priest, or what.

But just then two guys(santa & banta) walk into the dhaba. One says to the other "Look, Banta - that's the guy who got in our car when we were pushing it."
