"May there be good fortune throughout the universe, and may all envious persons be pacified. May all living entities become calm by practicing bhakti-yoga, for by accepting devotional service they will think of each other’s welfare. Therefore let us all engage in the service of the supreme transcendence, Lord Sri Krishna, and always remain absorbed in thought of Him."(Srimad Bhagavatam 5:18:9.)

The 108th ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION
of the appearance of
His Divine Grace
A.C. BHAKTIVEDANTA SWAMI PRABHUPADA
http://www.prabhupada108.net/

1896 – 2004

Founder Acarya of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness

Celebrated By

The International Society for Krishna Consciousness

The year beginning on Prabhupada's Vyasa Puja September 6th, 2004, and ending with his Vyasa Puja on August 28, 2005 marks the 108th anniversary of his birth. While everyone honors 100th anniversaries, Vaisnavas place great significance on the 108th anniversary, because 108 is a special number. Krsna enjoys with 108 principal gopis (cowherd girls), there are 108 Upanishads, and a round of japa on beads is 108 Hare Krsna mantras. ISKCON has created a special opportunity to glorify Srila Prabhupada on his 108th birthday and throughout the year afterwards. ISKCON's governing body commissioners in their annual meeting this year passed the following resolution.

Whereas: The 108th anniversary of Srila Prabhupada's appearance can bring special inspiration to the devotee community by glorifying Srila Prabhupada.
Whereas: H.H. Lokanath Swami was successful in performing the service of Srila Prabhupada's Centennial Global Minister.

Resolved: ISKCON will make the celebration of Srila Prabhupada's 108th appearance anniversary year a highlight of its activities until Vyasa Puja 2005. H.H. Lokanath Swami will take up the service of global coordinator for this project.

In 1996 ISKCON celebrated Srila Prabhupada's Centennial.  Participation in events far exceeded expectations.  Throughout the Centennial year, followers of Srila Prabhupada made extraordinary efforts to spread his glories world wide by inundating their countries, states, and cities with the holy name of Krsna, Krsna prasadam, and Prabhupada's books.  Temples world wide joined in celebrating many spectacular special events.  Streets were named in Prabhupada's honor, and several biographies about him were published.  There were also many wonderful special achievements and offerings by individuals and groups.  but why was the Centennial so successful?  We could only conclude that it was because Krsna wanted to glorify Srila Prabhupada.  Krsna wanted to show the world that He is know as bhaktanama mana vardhanah, "He who enhances the reputation of His devotees."
Srila Prabhupada's teachings, which continue to be felt throughout all parts of ISKCON, are the universal inspiration for the 108 celebration.  All initiated devotees and all followers of Srila Prabhupada have a high level of awareness, appreciation, and remembrance of him.  They feel connected with him as their siksa guru, accepting as essential the teaching he gave in his books.  Inspired by his powerful presence, they follow his instructions in their own lives and are able to bring others to follow them too.
The celebration of Srila Prabhupada's 108th anniversary will focus on a series of public events.  most of the international events that were so successful in 1996 will be held again.  The events will bring about a heightened appreciation for Srila Prabhupada and his movement in the public and increase ISKCON's member's awareness of being part of a united worldwide movement.
The 108th Celebration is not limited to events.  The spirit of the Celebration is to encourage each ISKCON devotee, member and follower to make at least one personal offering to Srila Prabhupada during the year in one or more of the following areas:
1. Help spread Srila Prabhupada's mission by expanding the congregation, distributing books and chanting the holy name, especially at 108 events.
2. Dedicate oneself to glorifying Srila Prabhupada by personally meaningful special achievement during the 108th year.
3. Build personal internal strength by commitment to improving both personal spiritual standards and practices and those of your community.
The 108th Celebration is a great time to introduce the whole world to Srila Prabhupada and his mission.  Let us all take seriously this very special opportunity, and wholeheartedly glorify Srila Prabhupada.

Srimad Bhagavad Gita AS IT IS

Bhagavad Gita:  Chapter 3 - Karma-yoga

                                 TEXT 2

                          vyamisreneva vakyena
                          buddhim mohayasiva me
                         tad ekam vada niscitya
                         yena sreyo 'ham apnuyam

                             WORD FOR WORD

   vyamisrena--by equivocal; iva--certainly; vakyena--words; buddhim--intelligence; mohayasi--You are bewildering; iva--certainly; me--my; tat--therefore; ekam--only one; vada--please tell; niscitya--ascertaining; yena--by which; sreyah--real benefit; aham--I; apnuyam--may have.

                               TRANSLATION

My intelligence is bewildered by Your equivocal instructions. Therefore, please tell me decisively which will be most beneficial for me.

PURPORT by HDG Srila A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada:

In the previous chapter, as a prelude to the Bhagavad-gita, many different paths were explained, such as sankhya-yoga, buddhi-yoga, control of the senses by intelligence, work without fruitive desire, and the position of the neophyte. This was all presented unsystematically. A more organized outline of the path would be necessary for action and understanding. Arjuna, therefore, wanted to clear up these apparently confusing matters so that any common man could accept them without misinterpretation. Although Krsna had no intention of confusing Arjuna by any jugglery of words, Arjuna could not follow the process of Krsna consciousness--either by inertia or by active service. In other words, by his questions he is clearing the path of Krsna consciousness for all students who seriously want to understand the mystery of the Bhagavad-gita.

Prabhupada Uvacha:
(here's some nectar, sometimes it comes in the form of Srutakirti prabhu's diary, other times from Govinda dasi's diary, Hari Sauri prabhu's Transcendental Diary, or sometimes from a letter, or other related source, but still nectar...)

July 15 1977

When he came down to sit in the garden, it was raining; therefore, he sat on the porch. He called for me and began to speak. "What benefits humans can get from this modern civilization? In India, the caste system was very good. A child would learn the technology of his father. Like a potter. The son of a potter would make little cups, little plates, little toys and sell to other children. The whole family would earn. Now they are sent to school. And then unemployment. What does a potter need school for? People were satisfied with the simple necessities. They would not charge unnecessarily for labor. They required very little to live. Now, time is being wasted without the purpose of life being accomplished. And when we teach the real purpose, they say, 'brainwash.' The Communists and others, they try to check us. In the varnasrama system, everyone was taken care of.
"The lower class men would worship the demigods. They knew there is someone greater than 'me.' The blacksmiths would worship Visvakarma. On one day, they clean all their tools and offer flowers and puja. brahmanas would come and do the puja. Even a butcher would worship goddess Kali and then apply the knife. In this way, they would recognize a higher authority. A spice merchant would worship Ganesa. A gold merchant would worship Laksmi-Narayana. A student would worship Sarasvati. Some sort of worship was there. But actually learning the Vedic knowledge was done by the brahmanas and they would give advice to others. Just like Gargamuni came to Nanda Maharaja. Now the big civilization [is simply interested in] how to make sex life and then kill babies. Concentration on sex. Become a hippie and worship hogs. Hippies are nothing but a group of madmen. Public sex and homosex."

Prabhupada: Suppose I am a very big business magnate. Next life, if I am going to become a dog -- according to my karma, the nature's law will act -- then what is benefit? One day before, Indira Gandhi was so important. Next day I'll maybe(?) nowhere, finished. Nobody knows where is Indira Gandhi. Just twenty-four hours she was most prominent woman. And after twenty-four hours nobody cares to look at her. This nature's law, how you can check? This is going on. Any moment, anything can be changed by the laws of nature. So India's importance is there. They know the law. Therefore so long the body, full of intelligence, human body, is there, they'll utilize it very... That is life, not to be carried away by the waves of nature. This is India's duty. So we want to make our institution at least a place for understanding this knowledge. It doesn't matter only a few persons may understand. That is sufficient. Ekas candras tamo hanti na ca tarah sahasrasah: "If you keep one moon in the sky, that is sufficient for light. What is the use of millions of stars?" Modern education, they are creating twinkling stars, millions. All useless for light. No light. And our Vedic civilization is: "Create one moon. That's all." That is sufficient. We respect, therefore, acaryas. Ramanujacarya, Madhvacarya, not the so-called voted leaders. We don't care for them. What is their value? Sva-vid-varahostra-kharaih samstutah purusah pasuh [SB 2.3.19]. You say, "Oh, they are being liked, eulogized, by so many hundreds and thousands," but what these hundreds and thousands of people are? Sva-vid-varahostra-khara. They're kept in ignorance like dogs, hogs, camels and asses. This propaganda should go on by the ISKCON movement. Bombay is the nicest place. Invite them. Convince them. We have got answers for everyone, however big scientist, big philosopher, big politician. Bhagavata has answered everyone. How selected animals' name has been given. This is Bhagavata. How the comparison is perfect. I have tried to explain why a particular animal has been selected.
Tamala Krsna: That purport is very clear.
Prabhupada: So the sum and substance is that I have got the opportunity of human form, everyone, and they should not be kept in the same animal consciousness. This is civilization. They should be raised to the standard of inquiring. Athato brahma jijnasa. That is civilization. This, civilization? To keep them in darkness? Hm? Sanatana Gosvami went to Caitanya Mahaprabhu. The first question is ke ami kene amaya jare tapa-traya. "Sir, I was prime minister, and I was very much eulogized by the people as pandita." Gramya-vyavahare pandita tai satya mani. "These village people, they call me pandita, and I also, such a fool, I accept, 'Yes, I am pandita. Yes.' But factually, if I inquire, 'What kind of pandita'? then apanara hitahita kichui na jani: 'I am such a learned pandita that I do not know what is the ultimate goal of my life. I am such a pandita.' Therefore I have come to You, Caitanya Mahaprabhu. You say what is my ultimate goal of life." This is approaching guru, not that "I am pandita, I am brahmana, or minister. Why shall I go to learn? I can teach everyone whatever nonsense I know. Let them..." What is that injunction? That emasculation? That Sanjay Gandhi became?
Tamala Krsna: Sterilization.
Prabhupada: Rascal, he's a boy, and he thought by sterilization the country will be delivered. Just see. By force. He thought... He became learned leader in one day, and he thought, "This will be sacrifice now." This is going on. "Because I am Indira Gandhi's son, I am perfect." Nature's law -- "Yes, you are perfect. It is all right. But I kick out in a moment -- finished."
Tamala Krsna: Perfect rascal.
Prabhupada: Perfect. They do not know. Ahankara-vimudhatma kartaham iti manyate [Bg. 3.27]. So at least in India these things should be stopped. That is my ambition. India cannot go in that way. We have got so much stock of knowledge. Bharata-bhumite haila. That I want. Others rascals may be misled, but in India at least there must be an ideal class. That I want. Why India's name should be defamed? That... They are following in the same blind man's way. Therefore I repeatedly said that "I invite you all. Come. Join. Understand." What is this nonsense? "Health. What will be health?" But where is your health, nonsense? You are going to die next moment. And "WHO"? What is that "WHO"?
Tamala Krsna: That Rajneesh.
Prabhupada: Huh? No, no, that...
Guest (2): Question last night.
Prabhupada: United Nation, WHO.
Tamala Krsna: Oh. World Health Organization.
Prabhupada: World Health Organization. Rascal, who is healthy? Everyone is going to die. "World Health Organization." They are manufacturing. They do not think that "Where is health?" Such foolish things are going on all over the world. So organize something reality and spread, slow but sure.
Tamala Krsna: We shouldn't be impatient to compromise just to...
Prabhupada: There is no question of becoming impatient. You have got diamond. No buyer of diamond -- that does not mean you have to throw it away.
Tamala Krsna: And sell something less.
Prabhupada: Yes. Diamond is diamond. It must be purchased by the suitable customer. Because there is no customer I shall throw it away? So we have got diamond. It is not possible that everyone will purchase it, but there must be diamonds. People must know that "Here is diamond. If I want it, I must pay the proper price." That I want to establish. Why India's culture should be lost in this way, in the wilderness?I am not cheap patriot like Gandhi and... I want to give Indian culture to the whole world. I'm not going to cheat people, taking Bhagavad-gita and speaking all nonsense. I want to present Bhagavad-gita as it is. That is my mission. Why shall I cheat you, a gentleman? (Hindi)
Guest (1): We'll try to follow your message properly.
Prabhupada: (Hindi) Why India's such big culture should be lost for the matter of these rascal leaders? This should be stopped. As Krsna says, catur-varnyam maya srstam guna-karma [Bg. 4.13]. There must be ideal brahmana, ideal ksatriya, ideal vaisya, as Krsna says. That is Krsna consciousness movement. It is all-inclusive. Economic question? Annad bhavanti bhutani [Bg. 3.14]. Grow food. Practical. Just like when I was going to the pandals, millions of clerks were coming -- "Education. Educated." And who is growing food? And they have to be provided in these pigeon holes and depend on ration. Is that civilization? And throngs of people are coming, just like machine, ants. Ants are coming. I saw like that. And go to the village side -- all vacant land. Nobody's interested to produce food. Everyone is interested to live within the city, in these pigeonholes, and go to the cinema and go to the brothel, go to the club and learn how to drink, how to become gentleman. Is that civilization? Human life's aim is lost. You do not know why you are going to the office, why you are eating, why you are... Keeping them all pet animal's mentality, doggish mentality. We have explained. University education means doggish mentality. Unless he becomes a dog, there is no food. No, the dog goes...
Tamala Krsna: Wagging it's tail.
Prabhupada: "Give me some food." "Hut hut hut!" Then another animal.(?) And as soon as you give some food, oh, so many -- "ka,ka,ka,ka,ka,ka,ka." For five hundred posts, 300,000 applications. Did you see that?
Tamala Krsna: Coming in Churchgate.
Prabhupada: No, there was a newspaper publication. For some post there is five hundred posts vacant.
Guest (1): Oh, yes. For application for a job, five jobs and five thousand people applied.
Prabhupada: Five thousand. Is that education? Better not to be educated. Those who are not educated, they purchase ten rupees' worth of potato and sit down anywhere and half... (laughter) Five rupees. Yes.
Guest (1): All vegetable are...
Prabhupada: You take some dal. Go to house to house, dal. They have no scarcity. And after spending so much money, living at the cost of fathers, mothers -- unemployed. No job. No food. Then plan something, Naxalite, this party, that party. Join some political movement and help Indira Gandhi. They are paid to make propaganda. They are paid. And they earn money by smuggling.

Completely rejecting all religious principles that are materially motivated, Bhägavata-Puräëa propounds the highest truth, which is understandable by those devotees who are fully pure in heart. The highest truth is reality distinguished from illusion for the welfare of all. Such truth uproots the threefold miseries. This beautiful Bhägavatam, compiled by the great sage Vyäsa in the maturity of his spiritual realization, is sufficient in itself for God-realization. What is the need for any other scripture? As soon as one attentively and submissively hears the message of Bhägavatam, by this culture of knowledge, the Supreme Lord is established within his heart. (Srimad Bhägavatam. 1.1.2)

The material miseries of the living entity, which are superfluous to him, can be directly mitigated by the linking process of devotional service; but the mass of people do not know this, therefore the great sage Vyäsa compiled this Vedic literature, which is in relation to the Supreme Truth. Simply by hearing this Vedic literature, the feeling for devotional service to Kåñëa sprouts up at once to extinguish the fire of lamentation, illusion, and fearfulness within the heart.  Vyäsadeva collected whatever conclusions were in the four Vedas and 108 Upaniñads, and composed them in the form of codes as the Vedänta-sütras. In Vedänta-sütra the purpose of all Vedic knowledge is explained, and in Çrémad-Bhägavatam, it is elaborated upon in 18,000 verses. What is explained in Çrémad-Bhägavatam and in the Upaniñads serves the same purpose. (Chaitanya Charitamrita. Madhya-lila 25.98-100)

I worship that Supreme Lord Çré Kåñëa, the origin of all the gods, the abode of mercy, whose transcendental form is black like the tamal tree, and who has appeared in the form of His sound avatära, Çrémad-Bhägavatam. It is the literary incarnation of Kåñëa, a bridge by which lost souls can cross the ocean of repeated birth and death.
Çrémad-Bhägavatam has twelve cantos, which correspond to the twelve different parts of Kåñëa's divine form. The first two cantos are the lotus feet of Kåñëa. The third and fourth cantos are His lotus thighs. The fifth canto is His lotus navel. The sixth canto is His torso and chest. The seventh and eight cantos are his lotus arms. The ninth canto is his throat. The tenth canto is his beautiful lotus face. The eleventh canto is His forehead, and the twelfth canto is His crown.

Vaiñëavas are divided into different sampradäyas according to their inclinations. The first of these has come from Näräyaëa by way of Brahmä, Närada, and so on. Another sampradäya comes from Çeña Bhagavän and has been outlined by the Sanat-Kumäras. (Çrédhara Svämé's commentary on Srimad Bhägavatam. 3.1.1)

O wicked mind! What kind of Vaiñëava are you? You go off o chant in a solitary place, but your chanting is only for name and fame (pratiñöhä). It is nothing but hypocrisy. Such mundane name and fame is hog's stool. It is an allurement of mäyä. Day and night you think of nothing but women and money. Why waste your time meditating on things that are temporary? You think money is the father of enjoyment, but money is not meant for your pleasure. When you claim wealth as your own, it only creates within you a lust for enjoyment. Your money should serve Kåñëa, who is Mädhava, the husband of the goddess of fortune and the enjoyer of all wealth.
Satisfying the desire of beautiful women is never your domain; it is the domain of their proprietor Yadava. He alone can fulfill the hankering of their heart. Rävana fought Räma in order to achieve the highest prestige (pratiñöhä), but that prestige was only an illusion. His hope for prestige had grown as mighty as a great tree within the forest of desires within his heart, but the soul can find no cooling shade there, for the "forest" is really only a mirage in the desert of material illusion. Don't be like Rävana, who wanted to enjoy the position of Räma. Accept the position of the servant of Viñëu. Take your stand upon the foundation of pure devotional service, giving up all your hopes for false prestige, and thus become a genuine Vaiñëava. If you don't worship the position of the Vaiñëava, you will be doomed.
Those who go to great trouble in hopes for prestige as great devotees, are envious of devotees and are rewarded for their trouble with a hellish life. The genuine fame that follows a Vaiñëava is not the same as the temporary fame that follows pretenders. The fame that follows a Vaiñëava does not stink of mäyä. It has no trace of the treachery of pretentious imposters. The self-promotion and fame of a pseudo Vaiñëava is like a dog-eating whore: it is unchaste and unprincipled. Their solitary bhajan is counterfeit. O mind, know that both the artificial fame and bogus bhajana of pseudo-devotees is a hellish phantasmagoria. They think: "I shall give up the kértana of the holy name and pray for fame and position." But what is the use of such "fame'"?
O mind, know for certain that Mädhavendra Puré never cheated himself in this way by robbing himself of his own internal treasure and proclaiming his greatness to the world. O mind, your fame is hog stool. No one shall ever be the equal of Mähavendra Puré, so why do you wish to compete with him for fame? Under the control of envy, you have drowned yourself in the ocean of mundane rasa and material enjoyment. The only thing you have truly renounced is the sublime Kåñëa kértana in the association of devotees.
O wicked mind! Your so-called solitary worship is preached and practiced by wicked imposters who impersonate devotees for nefarious purposes. With great care you should consider what Çré Caitanya Mahäprabhu taught Sanätana Gosvämé. Loudly chant the holy name of Kåñëa. Never forget the two most valuable things he taught Sanätana: phalgu and yukta, "real and false renunciation;" and baddha and mukta, "freed and enslaved." Never mistake one for the other, or think them to be the same.
Money, women, and fame are like tigers. A Vaiñëava gives them up and keeps them at a distance. Such a devotee, who is without material attachments, is a çuddha-vaiñëava. Such a devotee has conquered over the material world and its illusions of enjoyment. Accepting only what is needed in the service of the Lord, he remains free from the diseased mentality of material enjoyment and dedicates himself to the Lord's service. Free from all false attachments he sees everything in relationship to Kåñëa, understanding that everything is meant for the pleasure of Çré Kåñëa. He knows that to engage everything in the service of Kåñëa is real renunciation. Because he understands that the true position of renunciation is in dedicating everything to Kåñëa, he is truly fortunate. Although he lives within the material world he dwells within the revelation of Kåñëa's pastimes, and experiences the extension of the spiritual world within the material world.
On the other hand, one who chants the holy name of the Lord for name and fame is simply a hypocrite and a cheater. His renunciation is false. O mind! give up the association of both those who want liberation and those who want material enjoyment. They are all nondevotees.
What is in connection with Kåñëa is apräkåta: non material and supra mundane. The divine things in relation to Kåñëa should never be seen as material. By virtue of its divine connection with Kåñëa a thing becomes transcendental. It is therefore impossible for it to be anything less than divine. The mäyävädés can never think of Kåñëa. Proud of their piety, they think themselves liberated and blaspheme the Vaiñëavas.
O mind, your only prayer is to be the servant of the devotees. Make this prayer your only contemplation. Why do you want to go off and leave the devotees. A phalgu-vairägé does not understand that the true meaning of renunciation is devotion. In the dress of a devotee, such an impostor calls himself a tyägé, a great renouncer, but he is only a great pretender. He will never be a true Vaiñëava. Giving up the lotus feet of Çré Hari, he leaves the Lord's service behind in order to perform his "worship" in a solitary place. Having left the service of Çré Kåñëa and the association of devotees, what will he get by becoming famous as a humble man? Those who, in a false spirit of renunciation, give up the service of Kåñëa, the association of Vaiñëavas and the order of the guru to execute solitary bhajana may sit in their hut and chant, but the only fruit they get is false. What is the use of such foolishness?
O mind! Always engage yourself in the service of Çré Rädhä, and keep aloof from the snake of material enjoyment. There is nothing glorious about performing kértana simply for name and fame. You are the eternal servant of Çrématé Rädhäräëé. Why then do you renounce her for the cheating process of nirjana-bhajana? Why do you run after false renunciation and so give up the service of Çré Rädhä? The residents of Våndävana are the real object of preaching. They do not aspire for false prestige, nor are they devoid of life, as are the false renunciates. Those who have spiritual vitality can preach and instill spiritual life in their audience. Preaching is the symptom of vitality. One who preaches the message of Kåñëa consciousness is devoid of hopes for prestige.
Çré Dayita Däsa, (Çréla Bhaktisiddhänta) the humble servant of Çré Rädhä and her beloved Kåñëa always hopes for kértana, and begs everyone to sing the holy name of the Lord aloud. By the influence of such kértana, one may gradually come to the exalted stage of smaraëam, wherein one constantly remembers the pastimes of Kåñëa within one's mind. Nirjana-bhäjana is conceivable only after attaining this advanced level of Kåñëa-bhakti. (Mahäjana-racita Géta, Bhaktisiddhänta Sarasvaté Öhäkura. from Gaudiya Kantahara 3.24)

"IN EVERY TOWN AND VILLAGE the chanting of the Holy Name of Krishna shall be heard. This was the forecast made by Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu almost 500 years ago in India. Today, as the Hare Krishna Mantra -- Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare, Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare -- resounds in Bombay and New York, Nairobi and Sydney, and in Paris and Hong Kong, the prophecy of Lord Caitanya stands fulfilled. The universal import of this "Samkirtan Movement" (the congregational chanting of the Holy Names of the Lord) was expressed by Lord Caitanya as follows:

"Glory to the Sri Krishna Samkirtan which cleanses the heart of all the dust accumulated for years together. Thus the fire of conditional life, of repeated birth and death, is extinguished. The Samkirtan Movement is the prime benediction for humanity at large because it spreads the rays of the benediction Moon. It is the life of all transcendental knowledge, it increases the ocean of transcendental bliss, and it helps us to have a taste of the full nectar for which we are always anxious."

Agama Tantra and the Vaishnava Samskaras as a way of life:

Recently I was asked, "Don't you find it an inconvenience to always be checking to see when is the right time to do this or the best time for that?"

In simple terms my answer was and still is; if you go to the bus or railway station or airport it is probably an intelligent venture to enquire about the times and routes of vehicles than to just hope that one will be along soon, or one is going in your direction.

There are subtle influences in the Universe that, for thousands of years gone by, advanced cultures have honoured, respected and utilised. Before the corruption of the Vedik literatures by the Christian and Moslem invaders to India all these things were used; Ayurvedik Medicine; Vedik Astrology; etc. Today there's a rennaisance among many to revive these arts.

We have been trained and studied to be able to provide these services. See some of my sites:

"The religious principles taught by Mohammed and Jesus Christ are similar to the religious principles taught by Vaishnava sects. Buddhism and Jainism are similar to Saiva-dharma. This is scientific consideration of truths regarding religious principles. Those who consider their own religious principles as real dharma and others religious principles as irreligion or subreligion are unable to ascertain the truth due to being influenced by prejudice. Actually religious principles followed by people in general are different only due to the different qualifications of the practitioners, but the constitutional religious principles of all living entities are one." Dear Friends,

Hare Krsna!

In the download section of my website  http://tinyurl.com/9er95 you will find a copy of Ganguly's complete English translation of the Mahabharata (originally in 13 hardback volumes) in HTML format. It is in a 7.5 MB zipped file.

The Mahabharata explains by example how Lord Krsna's Vedic culture and Varnashrama Dharma are meant to work. Where the Manu Smriti is a concise book of laws for Mankind the Mahabharata shows how those laws are applied. The Mahabharata along with the Ramayana have been the main foundation for the continuation of Vedic culture because they are easily accessible to the masses. The Mahabharata was actually written for the unfortunate people of the Kali Yuga to help uplift them. A close study of the Mahabharata and Ramayana in conjunction with the Manu Samhita would serve as a good guide on how to implement Varnashrama Dharma. And, in conjunction with the Srimad Bhagavatam, insight into Daivi Varnashrama Dharma. The Mahabharata is thus an essential text for anyone interested in implementing VAD.

The Mahabharata is a vast treasure house of Brahminical knowledge and as the Mahabharat itself says: "What is found in the Mahabharata may be found in other texts; whatever is not found in the Mahabharata is not found anywhere."

You will also find a PDF copy  of a canto of Agnivesa's Caraka Samhita (an Ayurvedic text) entitled Sarirasthana, a fascinating account of how the body is formed starting with philosophical details, conception, karmic details, embryology etc. I once gave this text to an obstetrician to read while she was waiting to see me and she was astounded at how much knowledge was contained in such an ancient text. London Hindus Promote Religious Pluralism In Wake of Bombings

Vivekananda Centre London

LONDON, ENGLAND, August 5, 2005: Jay Lakhani of Vivekananda Centre London reports, "As a consequence of 7/7 bombings in London many interesting things have started to develop in London. Government departments including the academic bodies, media, and the mainstream faith bodies are frantically exploring various avenues to see if a resolution to this thorny problem can be found. The issues raised by these events are not going to go away that easily. The main commercial channel (ITV) in London interviewed us on this topic. We said that the resolution lies firmly in the pluralistic teachings of Hinduism. These ideas have to be incorporated and promoted within the framework of teaching of all world religions. We continue to promote this agenda to the Department for Education and Skills as well as the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority and the Religious Education council of England and Wales. Some stodgy theologians who cannot tell the difference between r elativism and pluralism continue to resist our ideas but they are perhaps not aware that the only other alternative left to us will be to disown all religions. Our reading on this issue is very brash; to be able to live peacefully we either embrace pluralism or pursue a secular path and banish all religions! Some mainstream faith bodies are showing tremendous openness in exploring the issue of how people of different religions can coexist. To give you an example, last night we (together with many other faith representatives) were invited to the Al Khoi Shia Mosque in London for a prayer meeting for the victims of the London bombings. We recited and translated Shanti-paths (peace invocations) from the Vedas. We have in the past presented Hindu teachings from quite a few mainstream church pulpits but this must be a first where Hindu prayers are recited and explained in a mainstream mosque! This can only happen in London and not in any other part of the world. We are optimisti c that the resolution of how people of different faiths can live together peacefully will be discovered and practised in London."

Rs. 560 mn (US$13 Million) plan to modernise security at shrine complexes
Posted on Thursday, August 04, 2005  KN News Desk
http://www.keralanext.com/news/?id=306798

BY Nasreen Mohammed
LUCKNOW: A grenade-proof cover for the makeshift temple in the Babri mosque Ramjanmabhoomi complex is part of a Rs. 560 million plan to modernise security at Uttar Pradesh's contentious shrine complexes in Ayodhya, Mathura and Varanasi.

The decision, taken late on Wednesday at a high-level meeting of central and state government officials, comes in the wake of a terrorist attack on the disputed Babri Mosque-Ramjanmabhoomi complex in Ayodhya last month. "To begin with, we have decided to enclose the makeshift Ayodhya temple in a bullet-proof and grenade-proof cover from all sides. But, of course, it would have to be done in accordance with the Supreme Court's guidelines," state principal home secretary Alok Sinha told reporters.

A major part of the exercise involves screening of all residents living in the immediate vicinity of the outer barricading of the 80-acre area around the complex. It has been decided to maintain a record of people residing in areas along the barricading. Residents will also have to provide particulars of every outsider visiting them.

Existing close-circuit televisions would be replaced by high-dome close circuit TVs with night vision facilities. Besides a modern public-address system, a 48-line intercom system is also proposed to be installed in the Ayodhya complex. "At least two of the five existing gates to the complex would be shut while a new plan would also be drawn up to facilitate entry and exit of pilgrims," Sinha said.

"Besides Ayodhya, where a high capacity generator was to be now installed, in view of the frequent breakdown or shutdowns, a decision has also been taken to install generators at the shrines in Mathura and Varanasi as well," Sinha said. In 1992, a Hindu mob pulled down a 16th century Mughal mosque in Ayodhya in the belief that it was built on the birthplace of Lord Ram.

Hindu radicals are also pressing their claim over the birthplace of Lord Krishna, currently shared between a temple and mosque in Mathura. Also in dispute is the ancient Kashi Vishwanath Shiva temple in Varanasi, where a mosque shares its wall with the temple. The Ayodhya dispute came back in focus after a terrorist attack in July in which five militants were gunned down by security forces.

Indians warned against carrying scriptures to Saudi
Indo-Asian News Service
http://www.eians.com/stories/2005/08/03/03gg.shtml

Hyderabad, Aug 3 (IANS) Indians travelling to Saudi Arabia have been warned not to carry religious scriptures, photographs or idols.

An official statement issued here Wednesday said that religious activities in private residences or undertaking missionary or preaching activities are banned in Saudi Arabia and could invite stringent punishment.

C.R. Banswal, principal secretary (political) to the Andhra Pradesh government, said the Indian ambassador in Riyadh had said that detention cases of Indian nationals on allegations of involvement in religious activities in that country were increasing.

The statement said the Saudi religious police recently arrested nine Indians for preaching Christianity.

"He (the ambassador) has therefore expressed the view that it is urgent and important that all Indian nationals be forewarned prior to their departure from India against carrying any religious scripture, photographs or idols with them to Saudi Arabia," said the statement.

The ambassador said the Indian nationals should also be strictly briefed against organising group religious activities in private residences or undertaking missionary or preaching activity.

"This would be a major preventive measure in promoting the welfare of the Indian nationals in Saudi Arabia," the statement added.

TV really is idiot box, say researchers
http://www.eians.com/stories/2005/07/21/21do.shtml

Wellington, July 21 (DPA) That television set in the corner really is an idiot box, New Zealand researchers say.

A 30-year study of more than 1,000 children has found that those who watch the most TV are least likely to go to university and get a degree.

Those seven percent of children who watched the box for under an hour daily were the most qualified by the time they were aged 26.

"Those who watched little television had the best chance of going on to university and earning a degree," said researcher Bob Hancox, deputy director of the Dunedin Research Unit.

He said some children spent more time in front of the box than they did in the classroom and the findings suggested that reducing television viewing could improve their education.

"A lot of people say you can learn a lot from television. I think this is saying that may be possible, but people aren't learning anything that helps them get any qualifications," Hancox said.

The study, which monitored the TV habits of 1,037 children born in Dunedin in 1972 and 1973 when they were aged between 5 and 15, showed they watched for an average of two hours a day, though this soared at weekends.

But over 20 percent sat in front of the box for more than three hours each school-day and they did the worst at all academic levels failing to get high school leavers certificate, a diploma or a degree.

Hancox said that although teenage viewing was strongly linked to leaving school without any qualifications, earlier childhood viewing had the greatest impact on getting a degree.

"This suggests that excessive television in younger children has a long-lasting adverse effect on educational performance."

The study found that even bright children and those from well-off families who watched a lot of TV were less likely to go on and get a degree.

"Children of all levels of intelligence did worse if they watched a lot of television. Similarly, the association between watching television and poor achievement was not because heavy television viewers had poor socio-economic backgrounds," said Hancox.

He said television had also been linked to attention and behaviour problems in young children that could impact on classroom performance.

The university said that while some previous studies had investigated links between television viewing and school performance, the study was the first to follow a group of children into adulthood.

NEW YORK - Sexy Vegetarians. If only Bo Bice had cut down on the ribs. Carrie Underwood, who beat out Bice to win the "American Idol" crown in May, was voted the "World's Sexiest Vegetarian" in PETA's annual online poll. She shares the honor with Coldplay frontman Chris Martin. More than 13,000 votes were cast in the contest run by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, the animal rights group announced Tuesday. Underwood, a 22-year-old Oklahoma native, wore a "V for Vegetarian" T-shirt on the Fox show. Martin, 28, and his wife, Gwyneth Paltrow, made headlines when they gave their 1-year-old daughter, Apple, a vegan birthday cake.

Underwood and Martin beat out other famous veggie lovers including David Duchovny, Reese Witherspoon, Avril Lavigne, Joaquin Phoenix and Prince. Last year, Andre 3000 of OutKast and Alicia Silverstone won the "sexiest vegetarian" title. Other previous winners include Tobey Maguire, Lauren Bush and Shania Twain. On the Net:

THE FOUR BRAHMIN BOYS

There's a story of four brahmin boys who were looking for wealth, so they went up into the Himalayas.  Brahmin means devotee, but they were interested in getting wealth.  They were thinking, "I've just come out of gurukula training, now we have to get some wealth, and then we can get married and have a happy life."  So they went to one sage who was living near the Himalayan mountains, and they asked him, "My dear sage, we have heard that you are all-knowing, so please tell us where we can find wealth."  The sage said, "All right.  So now I will put in each of your hands one ghee wick, a cotton ghee wick.  You just hold that in your hand, and you walk up into the Himalayan mountains.  Wherever this wick drops during the course of walking up the mountain, at that spot if you dig you will find something valuable.  You will find precious metal up to the value of gold."  So they were very happy, and they went up into the mountains holding their wicks.  One of the wicks dropped, so the boy dug there and he found copper.  "Oh, copper.  Very nice."  The other boys said, "Why just copper?"  "No no," the boy said, "I am satisfied.  The sage said, wherever the wick drops, so this is my quota.  God has given copper."  So he took that and went down.  The other boys continued, and another wick dropped.  When they dug they found silver.  "Ah, silver, very nice.  Even more valuable."  The boy whose wick had dropped was very satisfied, but the other two said, "Well silver's alright, but the sage said up to gold."  "Anyway," the boy said, "I've found silver by God's grace, so I'm taking that."  So the other two continued, and one of their wicks dropped.  He dug, and he found gold.  "All right," one said, "here it is, the gold.  Enough for both of us."  The last one said, "Yes, but I still have my wick.  It hasn't dropped yet."  The other one replied, "Yes, but the sage said nothing more valuable than gold."  "Well anyway," the last boy said, "I still have my wick, so I am going to find my treasure."  "Well you do as you like," the boy who found the gold said, "but I am taking this gold."  So then the last boy went high into the Himalayas, up to the very top, and still his wick didn't drop.  Then he saw one man in the distance.  So he was calling to him, "My dear sir, do you know of any valuable treasure up here?  I am looking for wealth."  As soon as he said that, his wick dropped.  So he thought, "There must be something very valuable here."  Meanwhile the boy had come a little closer to the man, and he noticed that the man was standing in a strange way, he was not moving, and there was a wheel turning on his head.  The middle of the wheel, the hub was grinding into his head and causing blood to flow, and this man was obviously in great pain.  When this boy's wick dropped then that wheel was suddenly moving from the other man's head onto his head, and the wheel was turning and he was feeling great pain.  He also could not move any more, the wheel was somehow keeping him in place.  The other man could move again and he was saying, "Oh, I'm free!  Thank God!"  The brahmin said, "Please tell me what is going on here!  Why am I suddenly stuck to this spot?  I cannot move and this wheel is on my head and it is feeling very painful.  What is happening?"  The other man replied, "You have come to the place where Kuvera keeps his treasure.  He's the treasurer of the demigods, and all his wealth, all the wealth of the demigods is buried here and you have come across it."  "Well, what is this wheel?" the boy asked.  "This wheel is a weapon of Kuvera which protects his treasure."  "Oh," the boy said.  "So tell me, what is going to happen to me?"  "What is going to happen to you," the man said, "Is the same thing that happened to me.  I also came up here looking for treasure.  I came up with some friends and met an old sage, and he gave us ghee wicks.  My friends got copper, silver and gold, but I wanted to go higher.  I came up here, and the wheel came onto my head."  "So what can I expect?" the boy asked.  "Well, this wheel will stay on your head and keep you fixed to this place.  You will not grow thirsty or hungry, you will just stay and not be able to move until somebody else comes up here looking for treasure.  Then you will be released, and he will get the wheel on his head."  "How long were you here?"  the boy questioned.  "Who is the king of India now?"  The boy gave the name of some king, and the man replied, "Well when I came up here, Lord Ramachandra was king."  "Oh no!" the boy said.  "That was two million years ago!"  And then the man was going to leave.  "No you can't leave!" the boy said.  "Yes, I can leave, I'm getting out of here.  I've suffered so much."  This greedy brahmin was left up there, and probably he's still up there now.  So don't go up into the Himalayas looking for treasure.

MORAL:  This is an illustration how this lusty desire for sense gratification can get one in great difficulty.  This brahmin broke the law and took more than his quota, so therefore he got into trouble.

How Spiritual Are You? Take This Test
http://www.time.com/time/covers/1101041025/quiz.html

UNITED STATES, October 20, 2004: Are you fascinated by the many things in life that cannot be scientifically explained? Do you seem to have a "sixth sense" that sometimes allows you to know what is going to happen? Do you sometimes feel so connected to nature that everything seems to be part of one living organism? To find out how spiritual you are, click on "source" above. The short test is adapted from a personality inventory devised by Washington University psychiatrist Robert Cloninger, author of "Feeling Good: The Science of Well-Being."

In case of emergency (ICE) contact number
East Anglian Ambulance Service have launched a national "In case of Emergency (ICE)" campaign with the support of Falklands war hero Simon Weston.

The idea is that you store the word "ICE" in your mobile phone address book, and against it enter the number of the person you would want to be contacted "In Case of Emergency". In an emergency situation ambulance and hospital staff will then be able to quickly find out who your next of kin are and be able to contact them. It's so simple - everyone can do it. Please do. Please will you also forward this to everybody in your address book, it won't take too many forwards' before everybody will know about this. It really could save your life.

Making Food Sacred - Offering our food to Krishna:
....excerpt from lecture by HDG Srila A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada - Srimad-Bhagavatam 1.3.1-3 -- San Francisco, March 28, 1968

The Vedic literature says like this, that God has no leg, no hand. Therefore the impersonalists take advantage of it. "Oh, here it is stated God has no legs, no hands." But the next line is, javana grhita: "He can accept everything which you offer Him in devotion."

Now how He can accept? If He has no hand, how He can accept things from us? That means He hasn't got a hand like us. His hand is different. Therefore even though He is situated in the spiritual world, which is far, far away from us, still, He says in the Bhagavad-gita, it is said,

patram puspam phalam toyam
yo me bhaktya prayacchati
tad aham bhakty-upahrtam
asnami prayatatmanah

Krsna says that "A little flower or little water or a little leaf, whatever My devotee offers Me in love and devotion, I accept it." And tad aham bhakty-upahrtam. "And because he has brought it with great devotion, therefore I eat." Tad aham bhakty-upahrtam asnami. Asnami means "I eat." Now you can say, "All right, I'll offer these fruits and flower to God, but it is the same. It is remaining. How He is eating?" But His eating is not like my eating, because He hasn't got a body like this. This body is material. If you bring me a plate of fruits, this body immediately swallows it. But He has got spiritual body. He eats... Simply as soon as He knows that you have offered it in devotion, He eats immediately.

Go here to follow the simple system for offering foodstuffs to the Lord
... and always with the Magic ingredient - Offer it to Krishna.....

Tex-Mex Spring Rolls
Submitted by Don Barnes
http://www.vegfamily.com/vegan-recipes/appetizers/tex-mex-springrolls.htm

Ingredients:
Coleslaw
Tamari
Corn tortillas
(see below for Coleslaw and Corn tortillas - you can purchase Tamari from almost any asian shop.)

Directions:
Heat 1 or 2 tablespoons of oil; add packaged coleslaw (cabbage or broccoli)and mix in 1 tablespoon of tamari. Cook, stirring occasionally, until slaw begins to brown.

Place corn tortillas between 2 slightly dampened paper towels. Microwave for 10 seconds.

Wrap ingredients in tortilla and eat.

Comments: This recipe is so easy, it's scary. My friend, Alice Strong of the Houston Vegetarian Society, passed it to me, and I was skeptical - until I tried it.

Now prabhus' if you want to make this from scratch which I humbly suggest you do, please find the following recipes for the ingredients:

Tamari: - tamari = wheat-free soy sauce  Substitutes:   soy sauce (thinner and less rich; made with wheat)
1/3 less sodium. Substitutes: tamari (thicker) OR Maggi seasoning OR black bean sauce thinned ... Szechuan chile (or chili) paste tamari = wheat-free soy sauce Substitutes: soy sauce

Coleslaw: -
Ingredients:
1 (3-inch) piece ginger, grated fine
1/2 cup rice vinegar or cider vinegar
1 tablespoon soy sauce
1 lime, juiced
2 tablespoons sesame oil
1/2 cup peanut butter
1 head Napa cabbage, sliced thin
1 red bell pepper, julienne fine
1 yellow bell pepper, julienne fine
2 serrano chiles, minced fine
1 large carrot, grated fine with a peeler
2 tablespoons chiffonade cilantro - coriander
2 tablespoons chiffonade mint
1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper

In a small bowl, or food processor combine ginger, vinegar, soy sauce, lime juice, oil, and peanut butter. In a large bowl, combine all other ingredients and then toss with dressing.

Corn Tortillas and Tortilla Chips

Serving Size : 12
Ingredients:
1 1/2 cups Masa harina *
2 teaspoons Salt
2 teaspoons Vegetable shortening
1 1/4 cups Water

* Masa harina - A flour made from dried corn, which is combined with liquid and used to make corn tortillas and tamales. Masa harina is available in many grocery stores and may be stored in an airtight containers or in a freezer.
In a medium bowl, stir together the masa harina and salt. In a small saucepan over high heat, bring the lard of shortening and water to a boil and stir until melted. Pour this liquid into the masa harina and blend well with a fork or pastry blender. Knead on a lightly floured board until smooth, about 5 minutes.
Divide the dough into 12 pieces and roll each into a ball about 1 inch in diameter. Roll out the dough between pieces of parchment or waxed paper until the dough is paper thin and about 6 inches in diameter.
Heat a large cast iron or other heavy skillet over high heat until very hot. Remove a circle of dough from the paper and place it in the hot skillet. Cook until brown on one side, about 30 seconds, turn and brown the other side. Keep warm in a cloth towel. Repeat until all the tortillas are made.

TORTILLA CHIPS

Cut tortilla into 8 wedges; set aside. Pour oil into a heavy saucepan or skillet to a depth of 1 inch Over medium high heat, heat to a temperature of 375 degrees F, or until a tortilla chips browns in 60 seconds.
Drop the tortilla wedges into the hot oil in batches and cook for 1 to 2 minutes, or until they turn golden. Drain on paper towels. Let cool and store in airtight containers.

Easy Jalapeno Pepper Jelly

This is a very lovely, very sophisticated jelly to have on hand for the holidays, as well as for unexpected visitors. Serve this with crackers, or puff pastry fingers and soft cream cheese.

Note I've kept the vinegar as it was in the original receipe, but please use the cider one and not the distilled variety when offering to the Deity.

Makes 6 small jars

Ingredients:
3 green bell peppers, minced
2 (4oz) cans diced jalapeno peppers
12fl oz/1 1/2 cups distilled white vinegar - or cider vinegar
3 1/4lbs/6 1/2 cups white sugar
1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1 (6fl oz) container liquid pectin
5 drops green food colouring

Method:
In a large, stainless steel saucepan, combine peppers, vinegar, sugar, and cayenne pepper. Cook over medium high heat. Stir frequently until mixture begins to boil.
Stir in pectin; boil 5 minutes longer, stirring constantly. Skim off foam, add colouring, stir and remove from heat.
Ladle into sterilized jars. Seal, and process in a boiling-water canner for 5 minutes.

Basic Puff Pastry

Ingredients:
1/4 cup Butter
1 3/4 cup All-purpose flour chilled
1/2 cup Water cold
3/4 cup Butter softened
1/4 cup All-purpose flour chilled

Method :
Preparation Time: 1:00

Cut 1/4 cup butter into 1-3/4 cups flour with pastry blender until mixture resembles coarse meal. Sprinkle cold water (1 tablespoon at a time) evenly over surface; stir with a fork until dry ingredients are moistened. Shape into a ball, and wrap in waxed paper. Chill 15 minutes. Combine 3/4 cup butter and 1/4 cup flour; stir until smooth. Shape mixture into a 6-inch square on waxed paper. Chill 5 minutes.
Roll pastry into a 15-inch circle on a lightly floured surface; place chilled butter mixture in center of pastry.
Fold left side of pastry over butter; fold right side of pastry over left. Fold upper and lower edges of pastry over butter, making a thick square. Working quickly, place dough, folded side down, on a lightly floured surface; roll dough into a 20- x 8-inch rectangle. Fold rectangle into thirds, beginning with short side. Roll pastry into another 20- x 8-inch rectangle; again fold rectangle into thirds. Wrap dough in wax paper, and chill about 2 hours.
Repeat rolling, folding, and chilling process 2 additional times. Chill for 2 hours.

Fast French Puff Pastry

Ingredients :
3 cup Unbleached all-purpose flour
1 cup Plain bleached cake flour
6 1/2 stk Chilled unsalted butter
1 1/2 tsp Salt
1 cup Ice water

Method :
Place the flour in your mixing bowl. Rapidly cut the sticks of chilled butter into lengthwise quarters, then into 1/2-inch dice; add to the flour. Add the salt. Blend flour and butter together rapidly, the butter should be roughly broken up but stay in lumps the size of large lima beans.

Blend in the water, mixing just enough so that dough masses roughly together but butter pieces remain about the same size.

Turn dough out onto a lightly-floured work surface. Rapidly push and pat and roll it out into a 12- by 18-inch rectangle. It will look messy.

Lightly flour top of dough and, with a pastry sheet to help you, flip the bottom of the rectangle up over the middle, and then flip the top down to cover it, as though folding a business letter. Lift the dough off the work surface with a pastry sheet; scrape the work surface clean, flour the surface lightly and return the dough to it, settling it down in front of you so that the top flap is at your right. Lightly flour top of the dough, and pat, push, and roll it out again into a rectangle; it will look a little less messy.

Fold again into three as before, each of three "roll-and-fold" operations is called a "turn". Roll out and fold 2 more times, making 4 "turns" in all, and by the last "turn" of the pastry it should actually look like dough. You should see large flakes of butter scattered under the surface on the dough, which is just as it should be. With the balls of your fingers make 4 depressions in the dough to indicate the 4 turns. Wrap the dough in plastic, place in a plastic bag and refrigerate for 40 minutes to firm the butter and relax the gluten in the dough.

Give the dough 2 more turns, beating it back and forth and up and down first if chilled and hard. Let the dough rest another 30 minutes if it seems rubbery and hard to roll; then it is ready for forming and baking.

Mexican Layered Dip

In a square pan, or a 9X13 roasting pan if you are making it for a crowd, or for feast, and layer from bottom to top:

Ingredients:
A layer of vegan refried beans
A layer of reconstituted taco-seasoned TVP (optional)
A layer of either vegan sour cream flavored with taco seasoning, or soft silken tofu blended with a small amount of lemon juice, and then flavored with taco seasoning
A layer of finely diced or grated white cabbage
A layer of avocado, mashed or diced, with additional lemon juice to keep from darkening
A layer of diced tomatoes
A layer of shredded lettuce
A layer of shredded cheddar-flavor Vegan-Rella or Vegan Gourmet Alternative Cheese or other Vege cheeses
Decorate with sliced black olives

Directions:
Serve with corn chips or tortilla strips or good old chappatis. One of the layers can be a jar of salsa, as hot as you want it to be. An alternative to this salsa is an Indian sweet hot tomato chutney - find below

Comments:
This is so good, I can eat it for BREAKFAST!

Tomato Chutney (Ekadasi)

Cooked chutneys act as piquant relishes that accent other dishes with which they are served. This North Indian-style tomato chutney is hot, spicy, and sweet. It can be either eaten immediately or refrigerated for up to a week.

PREPARATION & COOKING TIME: 15 - 30 minutes
YIELD: 2 - 2 1/2 cups (500 - 625 ml)

  Ingredients:
  •   3 tablespoons (60 ml) ghee or oil
  •   1/2 teaspoon (2 ml) black mustard seeds
  •   1/2 teaspoon (2 ml) cumin seeds
  •   one 5 cm (2-inch) piece of cinnamon stick
  •   3 - 4 whole dried red chilies, broken
 •   1/2 teaspoon (2 ml) turmeric
  •   3 1/2 cups (875 ml) firm, ripe tomatoes, peeled and coarsely chopped
  •   2/3 cup (165 ml) sugar
  •   1/2 cup (125 ml) sultanas (optional)
  •   1/2 teaspoon (2 ml) salt

1. Heat the ghee or oil in a large, heavy frying pan over moderate heat. Saute the mustard seeds in the hot ghee until they begin to crackle. Add the cumin and cinnamon. When the cinnamon darkens, add the chili bits and the turmeric. Immediately add the chopped tomatoes and, stirring to mix, cook over moderate heat for 10 minutes.

2. Add the sugar, sultanas, and salt. For moist chutney, continue to cook for another 5 minutes. For a thick jam-like chutney, cook for another 15 minutes or until the chutney appears thick and glazed. Serve warm or cold.

Soya Milk and Tofu

Two recipes in one. Make your own Soya Milk and, if you want, turn it into Tofu.

Ingredients:

Soya Milk:
½ pint dried Soya Beans
1 Gallon Water

Tofu:
1 Gallon Soya Milk (as made above)
2 teaspoons Epsom Salts

Method:

Soya Milk:

Soak the beans in water overnight.

With an excess of water, liquidise the beans to form a light slurry. Make up to 1 gallon.

Quickly bring to the boil and boil for only 20 minutes (if you boil longer, it will curdle and this is not the correct time to start the cheese process).

Cool quickly and filter the milk through muslin or cheese cloth.

Tofu:

Take one gallon of Soya milk and add the Epsom Salts. Stir and it will curdle. Leave for around 30 minutes (adjust the time and the amount of salts according to experience with any particular source of Soya beans).

Strain through a cheese cloth. The liquid (equivalent to whey in the calf vomit process) is an extremely powerful detergent and can be used for cleaning purposes (including washing the dishes). Slowly squeeze the liquid out of the curds and gradually compress them - this can be done by butting weights on the cheese cloth bag (as it has become) or by putting it in a press. Stop squeezing when the curds are firm.

Variations:

Tofu has almost no flavour of its own (your palette needs to have been meat free for a number of years before you can appreciate the subtleties of tofu) so it will quite easily take on other flavours - add them before pressing.
Add various herbs.
Add garlic and /or onion.
Try smoking it (putting it in wood smoke - not wrapping it in paper and trying to set fire to it)

Storage:

Store in a refrigerator under water that is changed daily. Will keep various times according to how well it is prepared but usually around one week maximum.

Serving suggestions:

To cook with it, chop it up into half inch cubes and deep fry it (in hot oil but with the heat turned off so that it doesn't stick to the bottom) until browned, drain it and then mix it in with any sauce you like. It can alter the emphasis on any meal, curries, even a pasta sauce.

Otherwise, it can be mashed up or chopped up and put in with salads or marinated with salad dressing first.

Note:

Making your own Soya Milk involves boiling around a gallon of water and, as a result, is quite hazardous. Boiling such a large quantity on a domestic cooker is not particularly efficient (or green) and is also time consuming. Making Tofu is also time consuming, involving a pressing process and after you have taken the trouble to make your gallon of soya milk, you may find it difficult to come to terms with the fact that you are going to curdle it.

Baked Blackcurrant Marscapone Peaches

For a delicious fruity taste of summer try this winning combination of fresh peaches with tangy blackcurrants (or frozen depending on the seasons).

Serves 6 (hahahaha yeah right, maybe non-devotees - hey we're talking about prasadam here.....I'd say two or three max')
Ingredients:
125g/4oz blackcurrants
2 tbsp caster (refined granulated) sugar
6 ripe but firm peaches
250g/8oz Mascarpone
6 Amaretti or similar biscuits, crushed
2 tbsp clear honey

Method:
1. Preheat the oven to 220°C/425°F/Gas 7. In a small saucepan gently heat together the blackcurrants, caster sugar and 1 tablespoon of water. Once the blackcurrants begin to pop remove the pan from the heat.

2. Halve the peaches, discarding stones. Place the peaches on a greased baking sheet, skin side-down. Fill each peach cavity with a spoonful of the cooked blackcurrants.

3. Mix together the marscapone and amaretti. Spoon the marscapone mixture over the peaches. Drizzle a little honey over each peach half.

4. Bake the peaches until the juices start bubbling, around 10-15 minutes. Serve warm from the oven.

Points of View
I don't know if Shel was actually a vegetarian or not, but he did do some pro-veg works like the following:

Thanksgiving dinner's sad and thankless,
Christmas dinner's dark and blue,
When you stop and try to see it
From the turkey's point of view.

Sunday dinner isn't funny
Easter feasts are just bad luck,
When you see it from the viewpoint
Of the chicken or the duck.

Oh, how I once loved tuna salad,
Pork and lobsters, lamb chops, too,
Till I stopped and looked at dinner
From the dinner's point of view.

My father is so old that when he was in school,
history was called current affairs.

TEACHER: Sanjay, give me a sentence starting with "I."

SANJAY: I is...

TEACHER: No, Sanjay..... In English we always say, "I am."

SANJAY: All right... "I am the ninth letter of the alphabet."

A devotee walks into the temple room and immediately begins opening all the windows.

The local Temple President asks the devotee "...why are you opening all the windows, in the middle of winter?"

"Srila Prabhupad told me to to open the windows" he said.

"Oh when was that?"

"That would have been 1974, yes the summer of 1974."

But prabhu that was thirty odd years ago, and in summer. It's flaming winter here at present............

Moral: oh dear, no you don't really need an explanation do you?

those who earn their living by the sweat of their brow,
and those who sell them handkerchiefs, cold drinks and electric fans.

A woman offered a brand-new car for sale for a price of ten dollars.
A man answered the ad, but he was slightly skeptical. "What's the gimmick?" he inquired.

"No gimmick," the woman answered. "My husband died, and in his will he asked that the car be sold and the money go to his secretary."

In a train compartment a young couple and an elderly, somewhat ragged, man were sitting. The girl looks like she's having some discomfort so her boyfriend asks her, "What's wrong honey?"

She replies, "My head hurts."

Her boyfriend kisses her forehead, and asks her, "Is it better now?"

"Yes," she says.

Then he asks, "Does it hurt somewhere else?"

"Here," she replies, pointing to her lips. So the boyfriend kisses her lips.  "Is it better now?"

"Much better."

"Anywhere else?"

She replies by pointing to her neck. So the boyfriend kisses her neck.

Annoyed at the pitiful public display, the elderly man asks the young man, "Excuse me pal, do you do hemorrhoids?"

The Joint Family means:

Having children while your parents are still young enough to take care of them.

A bossy top executive of our local bank was hospilized and was ordering his nurses around as if they were his employees.

One morning the head floor nurse entered his room and announced, "I have to take your temperature." After complaining for several minutes, he finally settled down, crossed his arms and opened his mouth. "No, I'm sorry," the nurse said, "but I can't use an oral thermometer, it has to be a rectal reading."

This started another round of complaining, but eventually he rolled over and bared his bottom. After feeling with her thermometer, the nurse the nurse announced, "I have to get something while this is registers. Now you stay just like that until I get back!"

She left the door to his room open on her way out, and he cursed under his breath as he heard people walking past his door laughing.

After almost an hour, the man's doctor entered the room. "What's going on here?" asked the doctor.

Angrily, the man swore, "Hell, what's the matter, Doc? Haven't you ever seen someone having their temperature taken before?"

"Yes," said the doctor. "But never with a daffodil."

The ways of this material world - strange but true

A young doctor was looking at a practice that was up for sale in a remote part of West Virginia. It appeared perfect with a comfortable house, fully equipped lab, and lovely gardens. The retiring doctor even quoted a very affordable price.

"This looks great," said the young doctor. "I just can't figure out how you're able to have such a nice set up with so few people to practice on.

"It's just simple, common sense and a strong work ethic," replied the older doc. "For example, most folks around here take a couple weeks off for a vacation every year.

My wife and I, however, spend the time at home, gardening and putting things in order. Our herb garden gives us a huge harvest, so we mix the herbs and boil them up for my secret tonic."

"But that doesn't explain this fine house and all this land," said the younger man. The elder doc replied, "That's where going that extra bit pays off. I run into my patients at church, at the store, whatever, right after they get back from their vacations. I tell them they don't look too good, and they usually say that their vacation took a lot out of them." He continued, "I'll agree with them, then invite them to stop around to my office for some of my old fashioned tonic, and at ten bucks a bottle, it can add up really fast!

Of course, that's just the beginning. A few weeks after a patient buys the tonic, I comment on how much better they're looking, so that they feel like the tonic is working."

"Then I have them stop by the office for a complete physical exam, just to make sure everything is alright. I also tell them to bring in a specimen, and that way I even get my bottles back!"

Two men were talking, comparing insane asylums to public schools.
The first man said, "I can see no difference between the two.  You are severely in need of help when admitted to either one."

The second man said, "That may be true, but I can point out one BIG difference!"

"What's that?" asked the first man.

"In an insane asylum, you have to show some improvement before they will let you out in the 'real world!'"

.......more optical illusions and paradigm twists here:

George Phillips of Meridian, Mississippi was going up to bed when his wife told him that he'd left the light on in the garden shed, which she could see from the bedroom window.

George opened the back door to go turn off the light but saw that there were people in the shed stealing things.

He phoned the police, who asked "Does someone live in your shed?" and he said no.

Then they said that all patrols were busy, and that he should simply lock his door and an officer would be along when available.

George said, "Okay," hung up, counted to 30, and phoned the police again. "Hello I just called you a few seconds ago because there were people in my shed. Well, you don't have to worry about them now, cause I've just shot them all." Then he hung up.

Within five minutes three police cars, an Armed Response unit, and an ambulance showed up at the Phillips' residence.  Of course, the police caught the burglars red-handed.

One of the policemen said to George, "I thought you said that you'd shot them?"

George said, "I thought you said there was nobody available?"

thanks Shyam' prabhu ACBSP for that one.....says a lot eh

Bafflegab:

Incomprehensible or pretentious language, especially bureaucratic jargon.

This word hit the newspapers and public notice on 19 January 1952, the day after a plaque was presented to its inventor to mark his creation of this invaluable word. He was Milton A Smith, assistant general counsel for the US Chamber of Commerce. It was presented by Michael V DiSalle, the head of the Office of Price Stabilization, who rejoiced in the title of Price Stabilizer. (Where are people like this when you need them?) Milton Smith coined the word in a piece he wrote for the Chamber's weekly publication, Washington Report, which criticised the OPS for the bureaucratic language it used in one of its price orders. This was picked up by the Bellingham Herald in Washington State, which wrote an editorial about it, saying "Gobbledegook is mouth-filling, but it lacks the punch of bafflegab. The inventor of that one deserves an award." The newspaper made sure he got one by paying for the plaque to be made and organising its presentation.

The inventor said he had spent a maddening day trying to explain the OPS order to a colleague and decided a special word was needed to describe its special blend of "incomprehensibility, ambiguity, verbosity and complexity". He tried "legalfusion", "legalprate", "gabalia", and "burobabble" before settling on "bafflegab". There's nothing mysterious about the make-up of the word, and that's part of its appeal. But it's the stress on those plosive consonants that really makes it fly. It might well have succeeded even without the publicity associated with the award.

At the presentation, Milton Smith was asked to briefly define his word. It was, he said, "multiloquence characterized by consummate interfusion of circumlocution or periphrasis, inscrutability, and other familiar manifestations of abstruse expatiation commonly utilized for promulgations implementing Procrustean determinations by governmental bodies." Just so.

.........otherwise known as BS

from Sunil

...and Finally no Bull S***

In the 16th and 17th centuries, everything had to be transported by ship and it was also before commercial fertilizer's invention, so large shipments of manure were common.  It was shipped dry, because in dry form it weighed a lot less than when wet, but once water (at sea) hit it, it not only became heavier, but the process of fermentation began again, of which a by product is methane gas. As the stuff was stored below decks in bundles you can see what could (and did) happen. Methane began to build up below decks and the first time someone came below at night with a lantern, BOOOOM!

Several ships were destroyed in this manner before it was determined just what was happening. After that, the bundles of manure were always stamped with the term "Ship High In Transit" on them, which meant for the sailors to stow it high enough off the lower decks so that any water that came into the hold would not touch this volatile cargo and start the production of methane.

Thus evolved the term "S.H.I.T " , (Ship High In Transport) which has come down through the centuries and is in use to this very day. You probably did not know the true history of this word.

Neither did I.  I always thought it was a driving term.........
