"May there be good fortune throughout the universe, and may all envious persons be pacified. May all living entities become calm by practicing bhakti-yoga, for by accepting devotional service they will think of each other’s welfare. Therefore let us all engage in the service of the supreme transcendence, Lord Sri Krishna, and always remain absorbed in thought of Him."(Srimad Bhagavatam 5:18:9.)

Total Solar Eclipse of 2006 March 29

On Wednesday, 2006 March 29, a total eclipse of the Sun will be visible from within a narrow corridor which traverses half the Earth. The path of the Moon's umbral shadow begins in Brazil and extends across the Atlantic, northern Africa, and central Asia where it ends at sunset in western Mongolia. A partial eclipse will be seen within the much broader path of the Moon's penumbral shadow, which includes the northern two thirds of Africa, Europe, and central Asia.

http://sunearth.gsfc.nasa.gov/eclipse/SEcat/SEdecade2001.html

http://riemann.usno.navy.mil/AA/data/docs/UpcomingEclipses.html

Not visible in Australia and New Zealand due to the Sun's not being visible at night for us - still the effects can be there. Details for the eclipse are below. Bear in mind that we in the southern hemisphere of Australasia are 10 or 12 hours ahead of the eclipse so our time would be from 20:36 - 23:48 on the Wednesday evening of the 29th March but as its a Solar eclipse the Sun isn't visible at night for us, still it is advisable for pregnant women not to cut or sew items.

The year's first solar eclipse occurs on Wednesday, March 29. A total eclipse will be visible from within a narrow corridor, which traverses half the Earth. The path of the Moon's umbral shadow begins in Brazil and extends across the Atlantic, northern Africa, and central Asia, where it ends at sunset in western Mongolia. A partial eclipse will be seen within the much broader path of the Moon's penumbral shadow, which includes the northern two thirds of Africa, Europe, and central Asia (Figure 2 and Figure 3).

The central eclipse track begins in eastern Brazil, where the Moon's umbral shadow first touches down on Earth at 08:36 UT. Along the sunrise terminator, the duration is 1 minute 53 seconds from the center of the 129-kilometre wide path. Traveling over 9 km/s, the umbra quickly leaves Brazil and races across the Atlantic Ocean (with no landfall) for the next half hour. After crossing the equator, the Moon's shadow enters the Gulf of Guinea and encounters the coast of Ghana at 09:08 UT. The Sun stands 44° above the eastern horizon during the 3 minute 24 second total phase. The path width has expanded to 184 kilometres while the shadow's ground speed has decreased to 0.958 km/s. Located about 50 kilometres south of the central line, the 1.7 million inhabitants of Ghana's capital city Accra can expect a total eclipse lasting 2 minute 58 seconds (09:11 UT).

Moving inland the umbra enters Togo at 09:14 UT. Unfortunately, the capital city Lome lies just outside the southern limit so its inhabitants will only witness a grazing partial eclipse. Two minutes later, the leading edge of the umbra reaches Benin whose capital Porto-Novo experiences a deep partial eclipse of magnitude 0.985. Continuing northeast, the shadow's axis enters Nigeria at 09:21 UT. At this time, the central duration has increased to 3 minutes 40 seconds, the Sun's altitude is 52°, the path of totality is 188 kilometres wide and the velocity is 0.818 km/s. Since Lagos is situated about 120 kilometres outside the umbra's southern limit, its population of over eight million will witness a partial eclipse of magnitude 0.968.

The umbra's axis takes about sixteen minutes to cross western Nigeria before entering Niger at 09:37 UT. The central duration is 3 minutes 54 seconds as the umbra's velocity continues to decrease (0.734 km/s). During the next hour, the shadow traverses some of the most remote and desolate deserts on the planet. When the umbra reaches northern Niger (10:05 UT), it briefly enters extreme northwestern Chad before crossing into southern Libya.

The instant of greatest eclipse[1] occurs at 10:11:18 UT when the axis of the Moon's shadow passes closest to the center of Earth (gamma[2] = +0.384). Totality reaches its maximum duration of 4 minutes 7 seconds, the Sun's altitude is 67°, the path width is 184 kilometres and the umbra's velocity is 0.697 km/s. Continuing on a northeastern course, the umbra crosses central Libya and reaches the Mediterranean coast at 10:40 UT. Northwestern Egypt also lies within the umbral path where the central duration is 3 minutes 58 seconds.

Passing directly between Crete and Cyprus, the track reaches the southern coast of Turkey at 10:54 UT. With a population of nearly 3/4 million people, Antalya lies 50 kilometres northwest of the central line. The coastal city's inhabitants are positioned for a total eclipse lasting 3 minutes 11 seconds while observers on the central line receive an additional 35 seconds of totality. Konya is 25 kilometres from path center and experiences a 3 minute 36 second total phase beginning at 10:58 UT. Crossing mountainous regions of central Turkey, the Moon's shadow intersects the path of the 1999 Aug 11 total eclipse. A quarter million people in Sivas have the opportunity of witnessing a second total eclipse from their homes in less than seven years.

At 11:10 UT, the shadow axis reaches the Black Sea along the northern coast of Turkey. The central duration is 3 minutes 30 seconds, the Sun's altitude is 47°, the path width is 165 kilometres and the umbra's velocity is 0.996 km/s. Six minutes later, the umbra encounters the western shore of Georgia. Moving inland, the track crosses the Caucasus Mountains, which form the highest mountain chain of Europe. Georgia's capital, Tbilisi, is outside the path and experiences a magnitude 0.949 partial eclipse at 11:19 UT. As the shadow proceeds into Russia, it engulfs the northern end of the Caspian Sea and crosses into Kazakhstan. At 11:30 UT, the late afternoon Sun's altitude is 32°, the central line duration is 2 minutes 57 seconds and the umbral velocity is 1.508 km/s and increasing.

In the remaining seventeen minutes, the shadow rapidly accelerates across central Asia while the duration dwindles. It traverses northern Kazakhstan and briefly re-enters Russia before lifting off Earth's surface at sunset along Mongolia's northern border at 11:48 UT. Over the course of 3 hours and 12 minutes, the Moon's umbra travels along a path approximately 14,500 kilometres long and covers 0.41% of Earth's surface area. Path coordinates and central line circumstances are presented in Table 1.

Local circumstances for a number of cities within the zone of partial eclipse are given in Table 2. All times are given in Universal Time. The Sun's altitude and azimuth, the eclipse magnitude[3] and obscuration[4] are all given at the instant of maximum eclipse. Additional maps, tables, and prediction details are available at NASA's 2006 total solar eclipse web site:

http://sunearth.gsfc.nasa.gov/eclipse/SEmono/TSE2006/TSE2006.html

This is the 29th eclipse of Saros series 139. The series began with 7 partial eclipses, the first of which was on 1501 May 17. Quite remarkably, the first dozen central eclipses of Saros 139 were all hybrid with the duration of totality steadily increasing during each successive event. The first total eclipse occurred on 1843 Dec 21. The series continues to produce total eclipses which culminates with an extraordinarily long total eclipse of 2186 July 16. The 7 minute 29 second duration falls just 3 seconds short of the theoretical maximum [Meeus, 2005]. The last central eclipse of Saros 139 occurs on 2601 Mar 26 with a 36 second duration. The final nine eclipses are all partial events visible from the Southern Hemisphere. The series ends with the partial eclipse of 2763 Jul 03. Complete details for Saros 139 may be found at:

http://sunearth.gsfc.nasa.gov/eclipse/SEsaros/SEsaros139.html

.....amd some words of wisdom from Shyamasundara prabhu ACBSP:

Attached is a diagram in png format of the path for the upcoming total solar eclipse of March 29.

The red kine indicates where the eclipse will be seen as total, as you move away from that line it will be less than total the further you move away.

As can be seen it covers a large part of the world and will be seen in most of Europe, Africa, and a large part of Asia, including part of India.

The following link http://tinyurl.com/s85j8 shows a movable graphic that  shows exactly where the eclipse will be seen.

In India only a part of teh Sun will be covered. But places like Kazhakstan will see a total eclipse. With Libiya having the maximum eclipse.

Srimad Bhagavad Gita AS IT IS

Bhagavad Gita:  Chapter 5 -  Karma-yoga : Action in Krsna Consciousness

                                 TEXT 21

                        bahya-sparsesv asaktatma
                        vindaty atmani yat sukham
                         sa brahma-yoga-yuktatma
                          sukham aksayam asnute

   WORD FOR WORD

bahya-sparsesu--in external sense pleasure; asakta-atma--one who is
   not attached; vindati--enjoys; atmani--in the self; yat--that
   which; sukham--happiness; sah--he; brahma-yoga--by concentration in
   Brahman; yukta-atma--self-connected; sukham--happiness;
   aksayam--unlimited; asnute--enjoys.

                               TRANSLATION

Such a liberated person is not attracted to material sense pleasure
but is always in trance, enjoying the pleasure within. In this way
the self-realized person enjoys unlimited happiness, for he
   concentrates on the Supreme.

PURPORT by HDG Srila A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupad:

Sri Yamunacarya, a great devotee in Krsna consciousness, said:

                 yad-avadhi mama cetah krsna-padaravinde
               nava-nava-rasa-dhamany udyatam rantum asit
                 tad-avadhi bata nari-sangame smaryamane
               bhavati mukha-vikarah susthu nisthivanam ca

"Since I have been engaged in the transcendental loving service of
Krsna, realizing ever-new pleasure in Him, whenever I think of sex
pleasure I spit at the thought, and my lips curl with distaste." A
person in brahma-yoga, or Krsna consciousness, is so absorbed in
the loving service of the Lord that he loses his taste for material
sense pleasure altogether. The highest pleasure in terms of matter
is sex pleasure. The whole world is moving under its spell, and a
materialist cannot work at all without this motivation. But a
person engaged in Krsna consciousness can work with greater vigor
without sex pleasure, which he avoids. That is the test in
spiritual realization. Spiritual realization and sex pleasure go
ill together. A Krsna conscious person is not attracted to any kind
of sense pleasure, due to his being a liberated soul.

Prabhupada Uvacha:
(here's some nectar, sometimes it comes in the form of Srutakirti prabhu's diary, other times from Govinda dasi's diary, Hari Sauri prabhu's Transcendental Diary, or sometimes from a letter, or other related source, but still nectar...)

January 5th, 1976

Sri G. Gopala Reddy, the president of the local Rotary Club, also accompanied Srila Prabhupada on the morning walk. He is the secretary of a committee that Mahamsa Swami has formed for the new temple. The committee has been very active in making new ISKCON life members and obtaining pledges for construction work. Prabhupada was happy to see him and thanked him for his efforts. Upon noticing a colony of bhangis, or "untouchables," Mr. Reddy mentioned that the government was distributing land to them. He asked whether ISKCON was engaged in any sort of social welfare work, because many people have asked him what our Society did to benefit others.

Prabhupada replied by asking him what he considered the best social welfare.

When Mr. Reddy said serving the poor and the natives, Prabhupada told him, "Everyone is poor. Who is rich? First of all find out: Who is rich?" Srila Prabhupada went on to explain how everyone is poor because each of us must suffer disease, old age, and death. Adjustment of a person's material condition can be done by anyone, but ISKCON was established for a different purpose. "These things are being done by so many other people, and we are doing something which is ultimate. The hospital gives some medicine when there is some disease, but that does not mean there will be no disease. Can they guarantee that, 'I give you this medicine -- no more disease?' We are giving that medicine -- that no more disease. That is the best social work. As soon as you give up this body -- tyaktva deham punar janma naiti -- you'll have no more birth. And if you have no more birth, there will be no more death. And if you have no more birth, then there will be no more disease. This is our prescription. Tyaktva deham punar janma naiti mam eti. Not that he is finished; he goes back to home, back to Godhead. This is our program."

On the way back to the house a companion of Mr. Reddy asked Srila Prabhupada how to meditate. Although most people in India are familiar with the concept of mediation, or have even practiced some form of it themselves, the actual purpose of meditation is rarely understood. The man's lack of knowledge became apparent when he explained that he thought the goal of meditation was to make the mind silent.

Prabhupada immediately corrected him, saying that it is not possible to silence the mind. He recounted a recent Back to Godhead article where a woman disciple had analyzed the fallacy of the idea. Prabhupada had greatly enjoyed the article in which the girl described how she had read in a book that meditation means "to free the mind of all thoughts." So she considered, "How can I be without thoughts? I will think of being 'without thoughts,' and that is a thought." Therefore she concluded it was bogus, and she threw away the meditation book.

Prabhupada said the point is to think of God. This alone is the real goal of meditation -- there is nothing higher. If one is a rascal and has nothing beneficial to say, then it is good if he is silent. Otherwise the Bhagavad-gita never advises silent meditation. Krsna says, satatam kirta yanto mam. He never said that 'You become silent.' Where is? Can you show me any verse in theBhagavad-gita? Can you show me any verse where Krsna has advised that you become silent? Or the mind is vacant? Where are these things?

"Man-mana bhava mad-bhakto: 'The mind should be absorbed in My thought,' man-mana. That is recommended. Where does He say that 'Make your mind vacant and think of nonsense'? He never says. And where does He say that you become silent? He never says. Ya idam paramam guhyam mad-bhaktesv abhidhasyati; na ca tasman manusyesu kascin me priya-krttamah [Bg. 18.68-69]: 'Anyone who speaks about this Bhagavad-gita, he is my dearmost friend,' He said. So why one should be silent? Our ultimate aim is how to become dearmost to Krsna, and He never says that 'You become silent.' Rather, He recommends that 'You always be engaged in glorifying Me.' Where is the 'silent'? These are all manufactured by these rascals. Meditation and silence, these are not recommended in the Bhagavad-gita."

After the morning walk the sannyasis have been coming into Prabhupada's room for a few minutes, eager for as much association with him as they can get. As he relaxed behind his desk waiting for breakfast he told them our preaching will go on only if we have spiritual strength. "We may have external strength," he said, "but success will only come if we have spiritual strength. Preaching programs will work only if there is purity." Citing the example of one of his leading Godbrothers in the Gaudiya Matha, he pointed out that he had all kinds of material facility -- money, mathas, etc. But what had he done for spreading Krsna consciousness? He explained that simply amassing material wealth will not bring spiritual success, nor does it signify success. He gave the example of milk touched by a serpent: It looks like milk, but it is spoiled.

"How do we keep our spiritual strength?" Prabhupada asked. We can keep our spiritual strength by being very strict Vaisnavas, he told us: by strictly following the principles and not giving any consideration whatsoever to maya's allurements. Maya is always trying to weaken us, he said, but if we think only of Krsna we will have spiritual strength; if we think of something else then we will have no transcendental potency. As always, Srila Prabhupada emphasized that we must remain strictly regulated and chant all our rounds every day.

Prabhupada: That is the first education, first instruction in the Bhagavad-gita, beginning of Bhagavad-gita-dehino 'smin yatha dehe kaumaram yauvanam jara, tatha dehantara-praptih [Bg. 2.13]. Unless one understands that "There is change of body and I am spirit soul within this body," he remains a cat and dog, and that's all. Dehatma-buddhih. Yasyatma-buddhih kunape tri-dhatuke sa eva go-kharah [SB 10.84.13]. So we are keeping this civilization -- animals. How there can be peace? You cannot make several dogs, bring them together as nation, and they will live peacefully. It is not possible that "You all dogs come here and feel nationally and be peaceful." Will the dogs will be able to do that? Because you are dog, it is not possible.

Dr. Patel: (Hindi) They fight among themselves for nothing.

Prabhupada: Yes. So they are keeping them cats and dogs by education, culture, and they want to be happy. How it is possible? First of all let them come to the standard of human being. Then there is question of peace and happiness. They are kept as cats and dogs, and how there can be peace? You cannot make any peace in the dog society. That is not possible. Hare Krsna. So that consciousness can come only when one is spiritually educated. If he is simply engaged for satisfying the senses, material, then he remains a cat and dog. You cannot expect any peace.

Dr. Patel: I think the greatest damage done to this civilization of Aryans of India was by MacCauley, who introduced the British system of education.

Prabhupada: But why you accepted that? (laughter) Why you accepted? Then why don't you accept? You should have refused.

Dr. Patel: Well, we were not there to refuse. We came afterwards. Our forefathers gave us...

Prabhupada: No, you can... Just like they are reforming. Their forefathers were drunkards, woman-hunters, (laughter) and they are reformed, the great-grandchildren. And we old men, we cannot do that.

Dr. Patel: I talk of MacCauley...

Prabhupada: MacCauley may mislead you. Why you should believe?

Dr. Patel: He misled our forefathers.

Prabhupada: No, why you should be misled?

Dr. Patel: Now we are going to lead them. Are you not leading them?

Prabhupada: Yes. Your forefathers might have been misled, but why you will commit the same mistake again?

Dr. Patel: Now we have improved upon the mistake and we are leading them, and we will lead them.

Prabhupada: No, that is not the fact. These boys, European, American boys, they were misled from the very beginning of their life, but how they are improving in spiritual consciousness? The thing is we are not prepared to take up our own culture. That is...

SRILA PRABHUPADA'S QUOTE OF THE DAY

This conception of life is the greatest barrier for advancing in spiritual consciousness.
Therefore the Vedic  civilization is so planned that one has to give up this rascal "own men" conception.

"IN EVERY TOWN AND VILLAGE the chanting of the Holy Name of Krishna shall be heard. This was the forecast made by Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu almost 500 years ago in India. Today, as the Hare Krishna Mantra -- Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare, Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare -- resounds in Bombay and New York, Nairobi and Sydney, and in Paris and Hong Kong, the prophecy of Lord Caitanya stands fulfilled. The universal import of this "Samkirtan Movement" (the congregational chanting of the Holy Names of the Lord) was expressed by Lord Caitanya as follows:

"Glory to the Sri Krishna Samkirtan which cleanses the heart of all the dust accumulated for years together. Thus the fire of conditional life, of repeated birth and death, is extinguished. The Samkirtan Movement is the prime benediction for humanity at large because it spreads the rays of the benediction Moon. It is the life of all transcendental knowledge, it increases the ocean of transcendental bliss, and it helps us to have a taste of the full nectar for which we are always anxious."

Agama Tantra and the Vaishnava Samskaras as a way of life:

Recently I was asked, "Don't you find it an inconvenience to always be checking to see when is the right time to do this or the best time for that?"

In simple terms my answer was and still is; if you go to the bus or railway station or airport it is probably an intelligent venture to enquire about the times and routes of vehicles than to just hope that one will be along soon, or one is going in your direction.

There are subtle influences in the Universe that, for thousands of years gone by, advanced cultures have honoured, respected and utilised. Before the corruption of the Vedik literatures by the Christian and Moslem invaders to India all these things were used; Ayurvedik Medicine; Vedik Astrology; etc. Today there's a rennaisance among many to revive these arts.

We have been trained and studied to be able to provide these services. See some of my sites:

"The religious principles taught by Mohammed and Jesus Christ are similar to the religious principles taught by Vaishnava sects. Buddhism and Jainism are similar to Saiva-dharma. This is scientific consideration of truths regarding religious principles. Those who consider their own religious principles as real dharma and others religious principles as irreligion or subreligion are unable to ascertain the truth due to being influenced by prejudice. Actually religious principles followed by people in general are different only due to the different qualifications of the practitioners, but the constitutional religious principles of all living entities are one." thanx again Shyam'

Dear Friends,

Hare Krsna!

In the download section of my website  http://tinyurl.com/9er95 you will find a copy of Ganguly's complete English translation of the Mahabharata (originally in 13 hardback volumes) in HTML format. It is in a 7.5 MB zipped file.

The Mahabharata explains by example how Lord Krsna's Vedic culture and Varnashrama Dharma are meant to work. Where the Manu Smriti is a concise book of laws for Mankind the Mahabharata shows how those laws are applied. The Mahabharata along with the Ramayana have been the main foundation for the continuation of Vedic culture because they are easily accessible to the masses. The Mahabharata was actually written for the unfortunate people of the Kali Yuga to help uplift them. A close study of the Mahabharata and Ramayana in conjunction with the Manu Samhita would serve as a good guide on how to implement Varnashrama Dharma. And, in conjunction with the Srimad Bhagavatam, insight into Daivi Varnashrama Dharma. The Mahabharata is thus an essential text for anyone interested in implementing VAD.

The Mahabharata is a vast treasure house of Brahminical knowledge and as the Mahabharat itself says: "What is found in the Mahabharata may be found in other texts; whatever is not found in the Mahabharata is not found anywhere."

You will also find a PDF copy  of a canto of Agnivesa's Caraka Samhita (an Ayurvedic text) entitled Sarirasthana, a fascinating account of how the body is formed starting with philosophical details, conception, karmic details, embryology etc. I once gave this text to an obstetrician to read while she was waiting to see me and she was astounded at how much knowledge was contained in such an ancient text. Yours faithfully,

Holi Festival Celebrated Across India and the Diaspora

http://www.ibnlive.com/article.php?id=6804&section_id=3&pagenum=0

NEW DELHI, INDIA, March 15, 2006: It's a rainbow of colors across the country as India gets draped in the multi-coloured hues of Holi even though an unseasonal weather threatens to play spoilsport in North India. The festival of colors also marked the end of winter and arrival of spring. From Holi heartland Vrindavan and Varanasi to tinsel town Mumbai to Anandpur Sahib and up to the frontiers, a jubilant nation is getting a new high as throngs of crowds are getting into festive gears, singing "Holi hai bhai Holi hai, bura na mano Holi hai."

Varanasi celebrated Holi on a muted tone. The city showed much resilience and spirit to bounce back from last week's terror attacks and get draped in myriads colors. The festivities began on a sombre note in the morning but picked up as the day progressed. People danced and sang their way to the ghats early morning on Wednesday to offer prayers and play Holi.

At Vrindavan, it has been a full blast. A huge procession of people -- all drenched in colors -- converted the whole city into a sea of colors as Brijwasis sang and danced through the streets and thoroughfares and at temples and ghats, celebrating a festival that is said to have born in these very lands many centuries back. In the nation's frontiers, the sentinels of the border are celebrating in high spirit far away from their families. There is nothing that can dampen the Holi spirit among the jawans. While the very tradition of Holi usually revolves around Lord Krishna, in Karnataka, it's Lord Siva who burns away the evil. In Bihar, singing, dancing and splashes of colors marked Holi. Bihari Holi is more famous for latkas and jhatkas. And add to that Bhojpuri Holi songs, it becomes an automatic blast.

In Gujarat, over one million devotees from Gujarat, Maharashtra, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh visited the famous Ranchhodji Temple at Dakor town, about 45 km from Vadodra, and offered prayers on the occasion of Holi. About 1,500 policemen were deployed at 28 points in the town for regulating the flow of devotees in the wake of terrorists attack at Varanasi. Most parts of eastern India, including West Bengali marked Holi on Tuesday and Santiniketan came alive with Basantotsav (Spring festival) made famous by Nobel Laureate abindranath Tagore. Ashramites in Tagore's abode of peace revved up Holi spirits with the customary dawn rendition of "Khol dwar khol, laglo je dol" ("Open the door, spring's here") as students, and teachers of Visva-Bharati took out the procession on the main thoroughfare of the university. At Delhi's Tihar Jail, mirthful songs rang through the air and there were color splashes all around as the prisoners celebrated Holi. Around 2,000 inmates of the prison, the largest jail complex in Asia, took part in celebrating the festival of colors, with the Director General R. P. Singh also joining in the celebrations. "They congregated and celebrated Holi and there was song and dance. This is for the first time that such a grand celebration was organized in the jail," said Sunil Kumar, the Law Officer of the jail. The inmates sang songs in Hindi and Bhojpuri and danced to the tune of the traditional Holi songs.

Reconstruct Hare Krishna temple in Russia: BJP

Saturday, 18 March , 2006, 17:29

New Delhi: Bharatiya Janata Party today asked Government to seek Russian government’s intervention to ensure reconstruction of a demolished Hare Krishna temple in Moscow.

Raising the issue during the Zero Hour Lok Sabha, BPJ’s Deputy Leader V K Malhotra said a new temple should be allowed to be constructed since the existing one was demolished. The design for the new temple has also been approved, he said.

Claiming that the Mayor of London and some influential bodies have supported the reconstruction of the temple, Malhotra said an orthodox group in Russia was opposing it.
