Of all dreaded maladies, saàsära
is the worst, because it includes
all other diseases. As long as we
are bound to take birth in the
material world, we must inevitably
expose ourselves to cancers,
heart attacks, AIDS, and so on. All
cures within this world are
temporary because even if we are cured
of one disease, we will
eventually contract another, either
in the present life or a
future one. As with our attempts for
happiness, our attempts
for health must fail sooner or later.
In previous ages in India, a criminal
would sometimes be
strapped to a chair and immersed in
water almost to the point
of drowning. Upon being brought up,
he felt great relief—only
to be plunged under again by his torturers.
Similarly, the
times when we are pain-free and happy
are like the few seconds
of relief the prisoner feels when
he is brought up from under
water. The basic principle of material
life is suffering.
Therefore we should be very eager
to receive the medicine
that will cure all our diseases. The
word nirväëa in this
verse refers to the permanent cessation
of samsära and its
attendant miseries. Nirväna has
become famous from the teachings
of Buddhism, but the voidistic liberation
the Buddhists teach
is unnatural for the living entity,
and thus it is temporary.
We can find factual, permanent release
from pain only in the
kind of liberation King Kulashekhara
refers to here: the
liberation of a devotee engaged in
eternal service to the
Supreme Personality of Godhead. When
through the process of
devotional service we become free
of all material desires
and attain pure love of God, we will
be transferred to the
Vaikuntha realm, where there are no
anxieties or suffering.
At the beginning of the Tenth Canto
of the Shrimad-Bhägavatam
(10:1:4), King Parikshit also uses
the word aushadhi (“medicine”)
to refer to the chanting and hearing
of krsna-kathä, or words
about Krsna: “Descriptions of the
Lord are the right medicine
for the conditioned soul undergoing
repeated birth and death.”
Such descriptions, of course, include
the chanting and hearing
of the Lord’s holy name.
As with any bona fide medicine, one
should take the nectarean
potion of the holy name under the
guidance of experts, in this
case sages and the spiritual master.
The Supreme Lord’s names
vary with His different pastimes and
relationships with His pure
devotees. He appeared as the son of
Mother Yashodä and also as the
son of Mother Devaki, and therefore
He is named Devaki-nandana
and Yashodä-nandana. One should
receive the Lord’s authorized
names from the spiritual master in
disciplic succession.
The shästras recommend which
names we should chant. For example,
the Kali-santaraëa Upanishad
recommends the Hare Krsna mahä-mantra:
Hare Krsna, Hare Krsna, Krsna Krsna,
Hare Hare/ Hare Räma, Hare Räma,
Räma Räma, Hare Hare. We
don’t have to search for some name or
manufacture one. Rather, we must follow
the saintly persons and
the shästras in chanting the
Lord’s holy names, as Shrila
Prabhupäda recommends in his
Shrimad-Bhägavatam (8.1.13, purport).

"When a person is in deep sleep, he
dreams and sees in himself
many other objects, such as great
mountains and rivers or perhaps
even the entire universe, although
they are far away. Sometimes
when one awakens from a dream he sees
that he is in a human form,
lying in his bed in one place. Then
he sees himself, in terms of
various conditions, as belonging to
a particular nationality,
family and so on. All the conditions
of deep sleep, dreaming and
wakefulness are but energies of the
Supreme Personality of
Godhead. One should always remember
the original creator of
these conditions, the Supreme Lord,
who is unaffected by them".

PURPORT
None of these conditions of the living
entities—namely, deep
sleep, dreaming and wakefulness—is
substantial. They are simply
displays of various phases of conditional
life. There may be
many mountains, rivers, trees, bees,
tigers and snakes that are
situated far away, but in a dream
one may imagine them to be
nearby. Similarly, as one has subtle
dreams at night, when
the living entity is awake he lives
in gross dreams of nation,
community, society, possessions, skyscrapers,
bank balance,
position and honor. Under the circumstances,
one should know
that his position is due to his contact
with the material world.
One is situated in different positions
in various forms of
life that are all but creations of
the illusory energy, which
works under the direction of the Supreme
Personality of
Godhead. Therefore the Supreme Lord
is the ultimate actor,
and the conditioned living entity
should simply remember
this original actor, Shri Krsna. As
living entities, we are
being carried away by the waves of
prakriti, or nature, which
works under the Lord’s direction (mayädhyakshena
prakåtih
süyate sa-caräcaram [Bg.
9:10]). Bhaktivinoda Thäkura sings,
(miche) mäyära vashe, yäccha
bhese’, khäccha häbudubu, bhäi:
“Why are you being carried away by
the waves of the illusory
energy in various phases of dreaming
and wakefulness? These
are all creations of mäyä.”
Our only duty is to remember the
supreme director of this illusory
energy—Krsna. For us to do
this, the shästra advises us,
harer näma harer näma harer
nämaiva kevalam [Cc. Ädi
17.21]: one should constantly chant
the holy name of the Lord—Hare Krsna,
Hare Krsna, Krsna Krsna,
Hare Hare/ Hare Räma, Hare Räma,
Räma Räma, Hare Hare.

TOASTED CHEESE AND SWEET CORN SANDWICHES:
Make bread - see the recipies that follow.
Toast the bread
Place on the bread Tararua Tasty or
A Kapati Coast Veg Cheese, Koromiko
or other Vegetarian society approved
cheeses.
NOTE: Kapati Cheese Co. has
18 varieties of bona-fide cheeses.
Spoon on fresh sweet corn that has
been cooked in butter
(or for those out of season - a spoon
of creamed sweet corn)
Place another slice of toasted buttered
bread on top and its ready to offer.

Potato and Pumpkin Bread (Bhaktine
Robyn's from Carterton)
1t sugar
250ml lukewarm milk
2t dried yeast
250g mashed potato
250g mashed pumpkin
700g plain flour
1t salt
1T sugar extra
2T melted butter
Dissolve sugar in milk and sprinkle
yeast over. Stir lightly and stand for
10 mins to become frothy.
Place potato and pumpkin in a large
bowl. Sift in flour,salt and extra
sugar. Mix until the consistency of
fine breadcrumbs. Make a well in the
center and add yeast mixture and lukewarm
butter. Mix until well combined
and knead for 10 mins until mixture
is smooth and elastic.
Form dough into a ball and place in
a well oiled bowl. Cover with plastic
wrap and stand in a warm place for
1 to 1 1/2 hrs or until doubled in bulk.
Knock down dough and knead on a floured
board for 8 mins. Shape to fit a
large oiled loaf tin. Use a sharp
knife to cut diagonal slashes along the
top. Cover and stand in a warm place
for 1 hr or until doubled in bulk.
Bake at 230C for 15 mins. Reduce heat
to 190C and cook further 30 to 45mins.

Here's the recipie for the rye bread
also.
Dark Rye Bread
3t yeast
1 1/2cup warm water
2T golden syrup
2T oil
1 1/2t salt
2cup plain flour
1 1/2cups rye meal
2T carob
1t coffee (Caffeine Free coffee of
course)
1t caraway seeds
Measure first 5 ingredients into a
large bowl with 1cup flour and mix
thoroughly. Cover and leave to stand
in a warm place for 15 mins.
Stir in remaining flour, rye meal,
carob, "coffee" and caraway seeds. Add a
little extra flour or water to make
a dough just firm enough to knead,
like your ear lobe. Knead on a lightly
floured board for 10mins, adding
extra flour as needed,
until dough forms a soft ball which
springs back when pressed lightly.
Turn in 2-3t oilin a bowl, cover with
cling film and leave to rise 30 mins.
Knead dough lightly in bowl for 1min
before turning out onto a lightly
floured suface.
Place in an oiled loaf tin, cover
and let rise for an hour or until doubled
in size.
Bake at 200C for about 30mins.
Variation: For a light rye loaf, leave
out carob and coffee. Vary the
amount of caraway seed, carob and
coffee to suit taste.

KRISHNA FRUIT CAKE - (Mother Kamalaya's):
1 tin condensed milk
1 1/4 cups of water
275 grms butter
1 1/2 cups sultanas
1 3/4 cups currents
1/4 cup chopped cherries
2 1/2 cups flour
3/4 tspn Bicarb soda
1/4 tspn salt
In a pot heat milk, water, butter and
fruit.
Boil 3 minutes
Cool and sift in flour, salt and bicarb'
soda
Mix together
Pour into 22 cms round tin lined with
a couple of layers of
greaseproof paper.
Bake @ 160 degrees centigrade for 2 hours.
For a larger cake, double the recipe.
Cover the top with foil for most of the time.
Bring out from oven. Cool it on cake wrack.
This cake is great as just a fruit
cake but if you want
to ice it, or put layers of jam and
cream so much the nicer.

According to a report in the F.O.L.K.
Newsletter, with the increase
in materialism in a middle gurukul
school in Oregon it was faced with
unique problem. A number of girls
were beginning to use lipstick and
would put it on in the bathroom. That
was fine, but after they put on
their lipstick they would press their
lips to the mirror leaving dozens
of little lip prints.
Finally the principal decided that
something had to be done. She called all
the girls to the bathroom and met
them there with the maintenance man. She
explained that all these lip prints
were causing a major problem for the
custodian who had to clean the mirrors
every night.
Then to demonstrate how difficult it
was to clean the mirrors, she asked
the maintenance guy to clean one of
the mirrors. He took out a long-handled
squeegee, dipped it into the toilet
bowl, and then cleaned the mirror.
It's funny that since then there have
been no lip prints on the mirror.

There was once an aspiring veterinarian

through veterinary school working
nights as a taxidermist.
