"Those who have no faith even after hearing about Krsna and the
excellence of devotional service, who think that it is simply
eulogy, find the path very difficult, even if they are supposedly
engaged in devotional service. For them there is very little hope
of gaining perfection. Thus faith is very important in the discharge
of devotional service." Ref. VedaBase => Bg 9.3

"Our advancement in Krishna Consciousness is made possible in two ways, by
Knowledge and renunciation, jnana and tyaga or tapasya. The more we become
renounced from this material world, the more we advance in Krishna
Consciousness. But we are only able to make such sacrifices and perform
tapasya if we have got knowledge. So first thing is to become knowledgeable
in Krishna Consciousness, then the tapasya or voluntary life of austerity
will result automatically. So I am requesting all of my students to read my
books very seriously every day without fail. In this way, if your mind
becomes absorbed at least one or two hours daily in the transcendental
subject matter of Srimad-Bhagavatam, Bhagavad-gita, and other books then
very easily you will make your advancement in Krishna Consciousness. This
restlessness or agitation of the mind cannot be rectified by altering the
material circumstances. If we are Krishna Conscious, any type of occupation
will suit me and we shall always be satisfied. Therefore, I recommend you to
read books more and more and try to understand the subject matter from
different angles of vision and be always discussing it with your godbrothers
even while you are working. When you are working and you cannot read, then
listen to the tapes of my lectures and hear in that way. And never neglect
to chant your 16 rounds of beads daily, rise early without fail, attend
mangal arati, take bath, and follow the other regulative principles, and
everything will come out very successfully, you can rest assured of that."

"So hearing is so important. Sri Chaitanya Mahäprabhu's preaching
work... Caitanya Mahäprabhu's, this propaganda of sankirtana movement,
He has given stress on this hearing process. Sthäne sthitäh sruti-gatäm
tanu-väì-manobhih. You can remain in your place. We don't say that you
change your place. Whatever you are, you remain. If you are American,
you remain American. If you are Hindu, you remain a Hindu. If you are
Muslim, you remain Muslim. We don't say that first of all you become
a Hindu or this or that. No. We simply request, "Please come here, sit
down, and hear." That's all. This is the yoga system. Hearing yoga system."

"The easiest way to control the mind, as suggested by Lord Caitanya,
is chanting "Hare Krsna," the great mantra for deliverance, in all
humility. The method prescribed is sa vai manah krsna-pädäravindayoh:
[SB 9.4.18] one must engage one's mind fully in Krsma. Only then will
there remain no other engagements to agitate the mind." Ref. VedaBase

Agastya Muni, Illvala and Vatapi

Once Agastya Muni was walking through the forest and came to a tree
where he saw many persons hanging upside down.  He asked, "Who are you?" and
they answered, "We are your forefathers.  Because you have no son, and
are also not perfectly self-realized, we have to suffer in this condition.
So either you get a son now who can perform sraddha for us and deliver
us from this condition, or we'll just have to go on like this waiting for
you to get full self-realization."

So Agastya, deciding he should save his forefathers, went to one
king and begged for his daughter.  But the king replied, "I have no
children."  So Agastya warned the king of the fate of his forefathers,
and then called all the beauty of the universe into one place, which became
a baby girl.  He gave the girl to the king, saying "Here is your daughter.
You raise her up.  She'll grow to youthful maturity in just one week - I'll
return then to take her as my wife."

And so that came to pass.  But when he had taken her to his ashram, and
proposed to her that they now produce a child, she said "If you want to
live as a grhastha with me, then you must provide suitable opulence.  I was
raised by a king, so this ashrama life is not suitable for me.  Of course,
I am your wife, so I will serve you in any case.  But if you wish to keep
this present standard, then don't ask me to bear you a son.  I'll serve
you as a brahmacarini."

So then Agastya Muni went to beg charity from a king.  That king took
him to the treasure-house and gave him his account book.  "You look at
the earnings and expenditures  - if you find any profit, I'll give it to you."
But Agastya, upon examing the bookkeeping, saw that this king had no profit
all his tax collection was spent on the welfare of his people.

So he asked the king if there was any other king who had great wealth,
and that king told where Agastya should go.  But Agastya said, "You are also
in need of extra money, so you just come with me and get some charity from
this king too."  So they both went.  At this new king's palace, the same thing
happened - that king had no extra wealth.  So Agastya and the two kings went
to a third king, and found the same thing there too.  So Agastya went with
the three kings to a fourth, and still the same thing happened.

So Agastya asked the fourth king, "Please tell me who has extra wealth
that he's not using."  That king said, "In the forest are two demon brothers
named Illvala and Vatapi.  They have killed many rishis and kings and have
looted them.  They do this by inviting travellers into their house for a
meal.  Illvala cooks Vatapi and serves him to the guest, saying that this is
goat flesh from a sacred fire yajna.  After the guest has eated, Illvala calls
"Vatapi, come out!", and Vatapi breaks through the stomach of the guest,
killing him of course.  Then these two eat the guest and keep his wealth.
In this way they've become fabulously rich, and they do nothing good with
their wealth."

So Agastya went with the four kings into the forest and approached
the house of the two demons.  Illvala invited them in to eat.  They sat and
he served what he said was goat meat.  But when he went out for a moment,
Agastya said to the four kings, "Don't eat anything."  When Illvala returned
he inquired why the kings hadn't eaten, and they said "We're following a
fast.  Only our guru eats."  So Illvala put all the food before Agastya,
and he ate it all.  Then Agastya, rubbing his belly, said "Vatapi, chiro
bhava (Vatapi, be digested).

Illvala said "Vatapi come out!"  But he did not.  He called again
and again but to no avail.  The kings told him, "This is Agastya Muni.  He
knows all about you, Illvala.  He knows you've killed many rishis and kings.
You'd better make a plan to satisfy him, because he's angry and will
soon digest you as he has digested your brother."

Agastya looked upon Illvala with angry eyes, declaring he would
be punished now for his sins.  Illvala bowed down and pleaded, "I'll give
anything if you spare me."  Agastya said, "Then give all your wealth to
these kings."  So then by his mystic power Agastya went with all the
wealth and the four kings to the Himalayas, to his ashrama.  He called
his wife, and she saw that the whole valley was filled with gold.

Then Agastya asked the kings for charity.  They gave, his wife
consented to have a child, and a son was born to them.  As soon as the
son appeared from her womb, Agastya Muni left his wife and returned to
the life of a renounced sage.

SHUKTO

This recipe is submitted by Krishna Ghosh

Ingredients

1 kaachkola (plantain )
1 cup mulo (radish/daikon)
1 medium aloo (potato)
1 medium begun (eggplant)
1 slicced thinly uchche (bittergourd - kerela)
1-1/2 tbsp. shorshe (mustard seeds)
1/2 tsp. methi (fenugreek seeds)
2 tbsp. posto (white poppy seeds)
1 tbsp. salt to taste

Method

Soak 1 tbsp. of each mustard seeds and poppy seeds in warm
water. Cut plantain, radish, potato and eggplant lengthwise
(about 2" long). Heat 1/4 cup of oil in a wok. Fry the
eggplant pieces, set aside. Fry the bittergourd slices, and
set aside. In the remaining oil, roast 1/2 tsp. each of
fenugreek seeds and mustard seeds. When mustard seeds start
to pop, add to it the plantain, radish(mulo), and potato and
stir fry in medium heat. As you stir the vegetables, blend
the soaked mustard seeds and poppy seeds and about 1" long
fresh ginger root, all in a blender into a smooth paste.
After stir frying vegetables for about 5 to 7 minutes, add
the blended mixture to the vegetables and stir constantly
for about 2 minutes. Add salt. Also, add the fried
bittergourd slices and eggplant pieces. Add now to the
"shukto" about 1/2 cup of hot water and cover wok for about
5 minutes, stirring occassionally and check if the vegetables
are cooked or not. When vegetables are all cooked, pour on top
about 1 tsp. of either butter or ghee. Serve with the rice.

Bengali Eggplant and Yogurt with Mustard Seed Sabji:

1      large eggplant--1 to 1 1/2 pounds, tip cut off and cut into 1" cubes
1 1/2T black mustard seeds, powdered in a coffee grinder
1/4 t  cayenne pepper
5 T    mustard oil
1 T    panch pharon mix (equal parts of whole cumin, fennel,
       fenugreek, black mustard, kalunji seeds*)
1 Cup  yogurt
1 1/2t salt and sprinkle black pepper, and cardamon powder

* kalunji is also known as nigella, kala jeera, and black onion seed

Soak ground mustard seed and cayenne in one cup of water. Cut up eggplant
into cubes. Heat mustard oil, put in panch pharon mix and after a few
seconds add the black mustard/cayenne water. This will splatter so have a
cover ready. Add eggplant and cook. You will probably need to add
additional water as the eggplant cooks to keep its level about the same.
Cover it for the last ten minutes.

When the eggplant is cooked add a cup of yogurt and the salt, mix and heat
up yogurt, but do not boil.

Sprinkle a tiny bit of black pepper and cardamon if you want.

This dish also tastes good cold the next day.

Variation: Anasua Munshi tells me that in his grandmother's village they
make this without the yogurt, substituting green chillis for cayenne and
using only fennel for the panch pharon mixture.

BENGALI BHAT PAYASAM (Rich Rice Pudding)
>From The Art of Indian Vegetarian Cooking by Yamuna Devi.

Serves 4 to 6

2 Tbs. ghee or unsalted butter
1/4 cup basmati or other long-grain white rice, washed, drained, and air-dried
1/2 of a cassia or bay leaf (optional)
8 cups whole milk, or a mixture of 6 cups milk and 2 cups half-and-half
1/2 cup sugar or rock candy, pulverized
1/4 cup currants
1/2 tsp ground cardamom
Enough pure camphor powder to cover the head of a straight pin (optional)*
1 Tbs. toasted charoli or pine nuts for garnishing**

Heat the ghee or butter in a heavy-bottomed nonstick 5 quart/liter pan
over moderate heat.  Add the rice and stir-fry until it darkens one or
two shades, then add the cassia or bay leaf and milk or
milk-half-and-half mixture.  Raise the heat to high and, stirring
constantly, bring it to a frothing boil.  (This will take about 15
minutes).  Reduce the heat slightly and let the milk boil, stirring
slightly, until it is reduced to about half of its original volume.

Add the sweetener, currants, and cardamom, and reduce the heat to
moderately low.  Simmer, stirring attentively to avoid scorching,
until the liquid is reduced to a fourth of its original volume.  It
will become thick and creamy.  Stir in the optional camphor and cool
to room temperature.  The pudding will continue to thicken as it
cools.  If you prefer it chilled, refrigerate for at least 3 hours.
Serve garnished with toasted charoli or pine nuts.

*Camphor: pure edible camphor (kacha karpoor) is a crystalline
compound that looks like coarse salt.  It is from steam distillation
of the aromatic leaves and wood of the evergreen tree _Cinnamomum
camphora_ that grows in India and China.  Extremely difficult to
obtain in the U.S.  It is *not* inedible synthetic camphor.

**Charoli seed: nut-like seeds from the tree _Buchanania lazan_ .
Available at Indian or Middle Eastern grocery stores.

At the time of creation:

God created the mule and told him, "you will be Mule working
constantly from dusk to dawn, carrying heavy loads on your back.
You will eat grass and lack intelligence. You will live for 50 years."

The mule answered, "To live like this for 50 years is too much.
Please give me no more than 20."
And it was so.

Then God created the dog and told him, "you will hold vigilance
over the dwellings of Man, to whom you will be his greatest companion.
You will eat his table scraps and live for 25 years."

The dog responded, "Lord, to live 25 years as a dog is too much.
Please no more than 10 years."
And it was so.

God then created the monkey and told him, "You are Monkey. You
shall swing from tree to tree acting like an idiot. You will be
funny and you shall live for 20 years."

The monkey responded, "Lord to live 20 years as the clown of the
world is too much. Please Lord, give me no more than 10 years."
And it was so.

Finally, God created Man and told him, "You are Man, the only
rational being that walks the earth. You will use your intelligence
to have mastery over the creatures of the world. You will dominate
the earth and live for 20 years."

The man responded, "Lord, to be Man for only 20 years is too little.
Please Lord, give me the 20 years the mule refused, the 15 years the
dog refused, and the ten years the monkey rejected."
And it was so.

And so. . . God made Man to live 20 years as a man, then marry and
live 20 years as a mule working and carrying heavy loads on his back.
Then he is to have children and live 15 years as a dog, guarding his
house and eating the leftovers after his family empty the pantry.
Then in his old age, to live 10 years as a monkey, acting like a
clown to amuse his grandchildren.

A mother took her daughter to the doctor and asked him to give her an
examination to determine the cause of the daughter's swollen abdomen.

It only took the doctor about 2 seconds to say, "Gimme a break, lady!
Your daughter is pregnant!"

The mother turn red with fury, and she argued with the doctor that *her*
daughter was a good girl, and would *never* compromise her reputation by
having sex with a boy.

The doctor faced the window and silently watched the horizon.

The mother became enraged and screamed, "Quit looking out the window!
Aren't you paying attention to me?"

"Yes, of course I am paying attention, ma'am.  It's just that the last
time this happened, a star appeared in the east, and three wise men
came.  I was hoping they'd show up again, and help me figure out who got
your daughter pregnant!"

"Excuse me, Sir," one of the reporters said,
"but how did you come to live to 150?"

"It's actually quite simple," the old feller replied.
"I just never argue."

"That's impossible," the reporter responded.  "There must
be something else, like diet, or meditation, or something.
Just not arguing won't keep you alive for 150 years!"

The old fellow stared hard at the reporter for several seconds.

"Hmmm," he finally shrugged, "maybe you're right."

Manika was married to a male chauvinist. They both worked full time,
but he never did anything around the house and certainly not any
housework. That, he declared, was woman's work! But one evening Manika
arrived home from work to find the children bathed, a load of wash in
the washing machine and another in the dryer, dinner on the stove and
a beautifully set table, complete with flowers. She was astonished,
and she immediately wanted to know what was going on.

It turned out that Charminder, her husband, had read a magazine article
that suggested working wives would be more romantically inclined if
they weren't so tired from having to do all the housework, in addition
to holding down a full-time job.

The next day, Manika couldn't wait to tell her girlfriends at the
office. "So, How did it work out?" they asked.

"Well, is was a great dinner, Manika said. "Charminder even cleaned
up, helped the kids with their homework, folded the laundry and
put everything away."

"I really enjoyed my evening." she went on to say.

Then her friends ludely said, "But what about afterward?" they
wanted to know.

"Oh, It didn't work out," Manika said. "Charminder was too tired."

..where the term "Facing the music" came from ?

The phrase originates in a military tradition. You've probably seen a
soldier in the movies "drummed out" of the service. He's done something
dishonorable so he's stripped of his rank and has to pass through columns
of other soldiers who may look away from him while drum beats mark his
passage through the ranks. The drums are the music he's facing and the
source of the phrase.

Strange BUT True - Did You Know...

To prevent evil spirits from entering the bodies of their male children,
parents dressed them in blue. Blue was chosen because it's the color of the
sky and was therefore associated with heavenly spirits.

Girls weren't dressed in blue, apparently because people didn't think that
evil spirits would bother with them. Eventually, however, girls did get
their own color: pink. Pink was chosen because of an old English legend
which said that girls were born inside of pink roses.
