Here we are suggesting some contingency
plan so as not to

interesting facts, as well as some
hairy possibilities.
If nothing goes wrong and we all have
provisions, then where
is the loss? One thing for sure is
that the Gaura Purnima festival
and feast will be that much bigger
and better.
The ultimate plan is to chant the Hare Krishna maha mantra...

"New Millinium Travelling Festival"
HH Indradyumna Swami has asked me to
inform all of you regarding
the details of the upcoming travelling
festival program on the
South Island of New Zealand. We welcome
as many devotees as would
like to come.
The travelling festival will take place
from January 10th - 30th.
The theme will be 'Spiritual Solutions
to Material Problems'.
We will be meeting various dignitaries
and VIPs along the way to
offer guidance and advice for a new
millenium.
To keep costs down and make everything
simple and easy, we will
generally be staying in public campings.
Devotees are expected to
bring their own tents and pay for
their own fees at the camping sites.
In a couple of places (ie: Christchurch
and Dunedin) we will organize
devotee's and friends' homes for free
accomodation.
Devotees must also make their own travel
arrangements. We expect many
devotees to travel by public transportion
from place to place (bus).
In order to make bookings for campings,
we need to know by December
10th (at the latest) exactly how many
adults and children will
be coming ...and for how many days.
It is very important that you
contact me on, or before this date,
if you plan to come. We cannot
guarantee that late reservations will
be accepted.
Everyone who joins us will be asked
to contribute $5 per day for
prasadam, children under 12 will be
free of charge.
We will have incense, blissballs and
stickers available for
distribution, if you need to raise
funds as you go.
All devotees will be required to do
menial tasks to help with
the general running of the festival;
cleaning duties, kitchen
service, bhoga shopping, etc.
Devotees will also be expected to strictly
follow a devotional
morning program.
The planned itinerary is as follows.

The first thing
is that one should very nicely understand the
position of material existence. Sanätana
Gosvämi, who approached
Lord Chaitanya, he presented himself
that “My dear Lord, people in
general, they speak of me that I am
very learned man,” grämya
vyavahäre kaha pandita, “I am
very learned man. But actually when I
think of myself, what kind of learned
man I am, I do not know what I
am.” So this type of advancement of
knowledge, simply for material
comforts, without knowing about oneself,
“What I am?” they’re simply
useless labour. One should try to
understand what he is. That is also
the beginning of Vedänta-sütra.
Athäto brahma jijnäsä: one should be
inquisitive to understand about himself,
Brahman, or the Supreme
Brahman. That is the real necessity
of this human form of life. The
animals, they cannot inquire about
himself or about the Supreme. But
a human being can inquire, that “I
want to become happy, but miseries
are coming upon me one after another.”
At least, one should know what
are the miseries. The miseries are
three kinds of miseries. It is not
the question of one religion or another
religion. The miserable
condition of life is for everyone,
either he is Hindu or he is Muslim
or Christian or Jew. It doesn’t matter.
Anyone who has accepted this
material body has to undergo the miserable
condition of material
existence. That is a fact. And what
are the miserable condition?
There are three types: adhyätmika,
adhibhautika, adhidaivika.
Adhyätmika means pertaining to
the body, mind. Everyone is
experienced that “I’m not feeling
today well due to some sickness
of my body or some mental disturbance.”
This is called adhyätmika.
And there are other miseries inflicted
by other living entities,
my enemies, some animal, some mosquito
or some bug. There are so
many living entities, they are also
try to give me some trouble.
This is called adhibhautika. And there
is another type of misery,
which is called adhidaivika. That
is natural disturbance—severe
cold, severe heat, some famine, some
earthquake, some disaster,
some hurricanes. There are so many
things, natural disturbance.
So in either of these three types
of miserable condition we are.
But those who are foolish, they do
not see to it. Under illusion
of mäyä they think, “Oh,
we are very happy.” This is called mäyä.
One is not happy, but he’s thinking,
“I am happy.” And they are
trying to become happy in so many
other ways.
But that is not the way of seeking
happiness. If we actually
want to be happy, then you have to
inquire about your
constitutional position, what I am.
That is meditation, to know.
You just think over yourself, “Whether
I am this body?” If you
think that... Suppose you think over
your, meditate upon your
finger. You’ll come to the conclusion
that “I am not this finger.
It is my finger. I am not this finger.”
Because if the finger is
cut off, that I am not dead, therefore
I am not finger. It is
very easy to understand. So you meditate
on every part of your body.
You’ll come to the conclusion, if
you are sane, that “I am not this
body. The body is mine. I am not this
dress. The dress is mine.”
That is the conclusion. Then what
I am? At the present moment I
am identifying with this body, with
this dress. (child disturbing)
That is illusion. Yasyätma-buddhih
kunape tri-dhätuke [SB 10.84.13].
Bhägavata says anyone who is
identifying himself with this body,
he’s an ass. He’s not even a human
being. Actually it is so, because
I am not this body. And the beginning
of Bhagavad-gitä is with
this proposition, that you are not
this body. Dehino ’smin yathä
dehe kaumäram yauvanam jarä
[Bg. 2.13]. The body is growing
because I am sitting within this body.
A child grows so long the
soul is there. If a child takes birth,
dead body, it does not
grow. That means the soul is not there.
That is called dead.
So this preliminary knowledge one
has to learn. That is called
brahma-jijnäsä. The Bhagavad-gitä
begins from this point, that
“I am not this body.”
So this is... The function of human
activity is to know oneself,
what he is, and then begin his work.
And if he works simply just
like animal, eating, sleeping, mating
and defending... These
are animal activities. If you simply
endeavor for eating whole
day and night, and if you are satisfied
whatever you like to
eat, and you think that “My mission
of life is finished, now
my belly is full with foodstuff,”
that is not human civilization.
But in this age people are degrading
so much that at the end of
the day, if he can have a full belly
meal, he says, “Oh, I am
now satisfied.” Just like animal.
Or “If I can sleep in a nice
apartment, oh, I am very happy.” Or
“If I can mate with a
beautiful opposite sex, oh, I am happy.”
These are animal
happiness. Actual human happiness
is not simply to meet the
bodily demands. That is called brahma-jijnäsä.
Athäto brahma
jijnäsä. Now where to inquire
about this Brahman, about oneself,
that is the next question. Just like
if you want to learn
something about medical science you
have to approach some medical
man or you have to take admission
in some medical school or
college. Or if you want to learn about
engineering you have to
seek after somebody who knows engineering
or technology.
That is the way of education. So many
universities and
department of knowledge teaching different
department of
knowledge. Similarly, if you want
to learn about yourself,
Brahman, then you have to seek after
some teacher who can
teach you about your self. This is
common knowledge. This
is common knowledge. So all the Vedic
literature says that
in order to learn that transcendental
science about yourself
or about God, then tad vijnänärtham
sa gurum eväbhigacchet
[Mundaka Upanishad 1:2:12]. In order
to learn that science,

certainly. One must.
And this verb gacchet is used where
this sense is used,
“must.” Gacchet, “must go,” “must
approach.” That is the
injunction of the Vedas. Similarly,

Yes there was all darkness in New
York on the 10th instant and
it was not a happy incident. I learn
that may people remained
in the elevators and in the subway
trains for more than seven
to eight hours in darkness. I do not
read newspapers but there
must have been some mishaps also which
we may not know. That is
the way of material civilization too
much depending on machine.
At any time the whole thing may collapse
and therefore we may
not be self complacent depending so
much on artificial life.
The modern life of civilization depends
wholly on electricity
and petrol and both of them are artificial
for man. You will
be surprised to know that I had to
take help of the old crude
method of lightening by burning some
vegetable oil and use the
small bowl as lamp to save myself
from the extreme darkness. I
could not procure any candle from
the shop but by the Grace of
Krishna one friend Mr. Bill happened
to come and he arranged
for some fruits and candle. Yes in
India we such experience
failure of electricity but I was surprised
to see the same
thing in America. In India the village
people say that in
Europe (Vilait) also there is ass.
And I saw it practically
that it is true. Even in such an advanced
country there may
be possibility such failure but failure
in America is more
dangerous than that in India. In India
they are not so much
dependent on electricity but in America
the whole activity
is dependent on electricity and think
on that night it was
a great deal of loss to the American
nation.

Subject: Success, Wealth or Love
A woman came out of her house and saw
3 old men with long white
beards sitting in her front yard.
She did not recognize them.
She said "I don't think I know you,
but you must be hungry.
Please come in and have something
to eat."
"Is the man of the house home?" they
asked.
"No", she said. "He's out."
"Then we cannot come in", they replied.
In the evening when her husband came
home, she told him what
had happened.
"Go tell them I am home and invite
them in!"
The woman went out and invited the
men in.
"We do not go into a House together,"
they replied.
"Why is that?" she wanted to know.
One of the old men
explained: "His name is Wealth," he
said pointing to one of
his friends, and said pointing to
another one, "He is Success,
and I am Love." Then he added,
"Now go in and discuss with your
husband which one of us you want in
your home."
The woman went in and told her husband
what was said. Her
husband was overjoyed. How nice!!",
he said. "Since that is
the case, let us invite Wealth. Let
him come and fill our
home with wealth!" His wife
disagreed. "My dear, why don't
we invite Success?" Their daughter-in-law
was listening from
the other corner of the house.
She jumped in with her own
suggestion: "Would it not be better
to invite Love? Our home
will then be filled with love!"
"Let us heed our daughter-in-law's
advice," said the husband
to his wife. "Go out and invite
Love to be our guest."
The woman went out and asked the 3
old men, "Which one of
you is Love? Please come in
and be our guest."
Love got up and started walking toward
the house. The
other 2 also got up and followed him.
Surprised, the lady
asked Wealth and Success: "I
only invited Love, Why are
you coming in?" The old men
replied together: "If you
had invited Wealth or Success, the
other two of us would've
stayed out, but since you invited
Love, wherever He goes,
we go with him. Wherever there is
Love, there is
also Wealth and Success!!!!!!"

BEAN AND LEGUME DISHES
Beans and legumes are not only rich
in essential iron, vitamin B,
and proteins, but they're also delious!
Here are some of the many
interesting ways to use them.
Israeli Chickpea Croquettes (Falafel)
Falafel are spicy chickpea croquettes.
The original Egyptian
variety contained dried white broad
beans and were called ta'amia.
In Israel, chickpeas were substituted
for the broad beans.
Falafel are delicious served
stuffed inside split Middle
Eastern Round Bread (Pita) dressed
with Tahini Sauce or Hummus
and accompanied by green salad.
CHICKPEA SOAKING TIME: overnight
PREPARATION TIME: 10 minutes
MIXTURE RESTING TIME: 1/2 hour
COOKING TIME: 20 minutes
YIELD: 14 to 16 falafel
11/4 cups (310 ml) chickpeas, soaked
overnight and drained
1/2 teaspoon (2 ml) yellow asafoetida
powder
3/4 cup (185 ml) finely chopped parsley
1 teaspoon (5 ml) ground coriander
1 teaspoon (5 ml) ground cumin
1/4 teaspoon (1 ml) cayenne pepper
11/2 teaspoons (7 ml) salt
1/4 teaspoon (1 ml) freshly ground
black pepper
1/2 teaspoon (2 ml) baking powder
oil for deep-frying
1. Place the chickpeas in a food processor
and mince finely.
Scrape the minced chickpeas into a
bowl. Fold in the herbs,
spices, salt, and baking powder. Mix
well, knead, and leave
for 30 minutes.
2. Form the mixture into 14 to 16 falafel
balls. If they're
too sticky, roll the falafel in a
little flour. Repeat until
all the mixture is rolled.
3. Fill a heavy pan or wok with ghee
or oil to a depth of
6.5 - 7.5 cm (21/2 - 3 inches). Heat
until moderately hot
180°C/355°F. Deep-fry 6 to
8 falafels at a time, turning
when required, for 5 or 6 minutes,
or until they're evenly
golden brown.
4. Remove and drain on paper towels.
Cook all the falafel.
Serve hot, as recommended above.

Baked Zucchini with Cheddar Cheese
Preparation Time: 20 minutes
Servings: 3 as a side
INGREDIENTS
2 medium zucchini, thinly sliced
1/8 tsp ground nutmeg
1 tsp Dijon mustard
1/2 cup Cheddar cheese or Tasty Tararua;
shredded
1/8 tsp ground white pepper
DIRECTIONS:
Place the sliced zucchini into a large
bowl.
Combine the remaining ingredients
and toss well.
Pour into a lightly oiled 2-quart casserole.
Bake at 350F (175 C). for 35-40 minutes.

RICH CHRISTMASY TYPE FRUIT CAKE:
METRIC IMP. US.
200g 7 oz 1 ¾ cups white
self-raising flour
250g 9 oz 1 ½ cups currants
175g 6 oz 1 cup raisins
75g 3 oz ½ cup sultanas
75g 3 oz ½ cup dried
apricots, finely chopped
75g 3 oz ¾ cup flaked
almonds
300ml ½ pint 1 ¼ cups
orange juice
175g 6 oz ¾ cup soft
unsalted butter
100g 4 oz ½ cup caster
sugar
2 tbs. 2 tbs. 2 tbs. molasses
8 tbs. 8 tbs. 8 tbs. sour cream
50g 2 oz ½ cup ground
almonds
1 tsp. 1 tsp. 1 tsp. ground
mixed spice
½ tsp. ½ tsp. ½
tsp. ground cinnamon
¼ tsp. ¼ tsp. ¼
tsp. ground nutmeg
3 tbs. 3 tbs. 3 tbs. milk
grated rind 1 lemon
DECORATION.
METRIC IMP. US.
2 tbs. 2 tbs. 2 tbs. apricot
jam
2 tbs. 2 tbs. 2 tbs. clear honey
2 tbs. 2 tbs. 2 tbs. boiling
water
a selection of halved shelled nuts
Preheat the oven to 140C/275F/gas
mark 1
Use a 20cm/8 inch round cake tin.
Place the dried fruit in a bowl with
the flaked almonds, lemon
rind and orange juice, cover with
a damp cloth and leave to
stand for 8 hours or overnight.
Grease and line the base and sides
of the cake tin with a double
layer of greased greaseproof paper.
Tie a thick band of brown
paper around the outside of the tin
and stand it on a pad of
brown paper on a baking sheet to protect
the cake during cooking.
Cream the butter, sugar and molasses
together until light and
fluffy. Gradually beat in the sour
cream, a little at a time,
adding the ground almonds alternately
and mixing well after
each addition.
Sieve the flour and spices into the
bowl, adding any bran
remaining in the sieve. Add the fruit,
with the liquid, then
the milk and mix to a dropping consistency.
Spoon into the
prepared tin and smooth the top. Cover
the top loosely with
several layers of greaseproof paper
and a layer of brown paper.
Bake in the preheated cool oven. Check
the cake after 2 ½ hours,
and then at half hourly intervals.
Test by inserting a warm
knife into the centre of the cake;
if it emerges clean then
the cake is ready.
Remove from the oven and leave to cool
in the tin until
completely cold. Remove from tin,
and take out of the lining
paper. Wrap in kitchen foil and store
in an airtight
container until needed.
Decoration: Arrange the nut halves
on the top of the cake.
Make a glaze by combining the apricot
jam with the honey and
boiling water in a small bowl. This
makes a smooth, shiny
paste. Brush this over the top of
the cake.
