Srimad Bhagavad Gita AS IT ISBhagavad Gita: Chapter 1
Observing the Armies on the Battlefield of Kuruksetra

sankarah--such unwanted children; narakaya--make for hellish life; eva--certainly; kula-ghnanam--for those who are killers of the family; kulasya--for the family; ca--also; patanti--fall down; pitarah--forefathers; hi--certainly; esam--of them; lupta--stopped; pinda--of offerings of food; udaka--and water; kriyah--performances.TRANSLATION
An increase of unwanted population certainly causes hellish life both for the family and for those who destroy the family tradition. The ancestors of such corrupt families fall down, because the performances for offering them food and water are entirely stopped.PURPORT by HDG Srila A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada:
According to the rules and regulations of fruitive activities, there is a need to offer periodical food and water to the forefathers of the family. This offering is performed by worship of Visnu, because eating the remnants of food offered to Visnu can deliver one from all kinds of sinful actions. Sometimes the forefathers may be suffering from various types of sinful reactions, and sometimes some of them cannot even acquire a gross material body and are forced to remain in subtle bodies as ghosts. Thus, when remnants of prasadam food are offered to forefathers by descendants, the forefathers are released from ghostly or other kinds of miserable life. Such help rendered to forefathers is a family tradition, and those who are not in devotional life are required to perform such rituals. One who is engaged in the devotional life is not required to perform such actions. Simply by performing devotional service, one can deliver hundreds and thousands of forefathers from all kinds of misery. It is stated in the Bhagavatam (11.5.41):devarsi-bhutapta-nrnam pitrnam
na kinkaro nayam rni ca rajan
sarvatmana yah saranam saranyam
gato mukundam parihrtya kartamAnyone who has taken shelter of the lotus feet of Mukunda, the giver of liberation, giving up all kinds of obligation, and has taken to the path in all seriousness, owes neither duties nor obligations to the demigods, sages, general living entities, family members, humankind or forefathers. Such obligations are automatically fulfilled by performance of devotional service to the Supreme Personality of Godhead.

Prabhupada Uvacha:
(here's some nectar, sometimes it comes in the form of Srutakirti prabhu's
diary, other times from Govinda dasi's diary, or sometimes from a letter,
but still nectar...)
Short Story
One of Srila Prabhupada's sannyasi disciples had
gradually drifted away, stopped strictly following the principles, allowed
his hair to grow back, and stopped wearing a dhoti. Despite these changes,
the devotee still fancied that he could be a spiritual leader. But when
he came to visit Srila Prabhupada in Melbourne, Australia, however, Prabhupada
told him he would never succeed unless he followed the standard practice.
To illustrate this, Prabhupada told a story.
A servant of a very rich man came before his
master one day and told him of an interesting yogi he had seen in the river.
The servant said that this yogi claimed he could stay in the cold water
of the river all night in the middle of winter without any outside heat.
The yogi was willing to wager with anyone to prove that he could do it.
When the rich man heard this, he decided to wager against the yogi. So
the bet was made to see whether the yogi could stay in the water all night.
The yogi went into the water and the rich man and his servant went home. The next day the word came that the yogi had successfully stayed in the water all night. The rich man went out to see the yogi and indeed he was still standing in the water. Therefore, by all rights the rich man had lost the wager. But then a friend of the rich man said, "Wait! See that light?" He pointed to a small flame far away in the tower of a temple.
The rich man's friend said, "By his mystic power, this yogi had been using the heat of that light to keep warm in the water. So he shouldn't be paid, because the bet was that he would stay in the water without taking any heat.
Taking advantage of this word jugglery, the rich
man said, "Yes, I'm not going to pay you. You've tricked me."
Then the rich man and his servant went back to
their house. The rich man asked his servant to quickly cook him a nice
breakfast, but after waiting for some time, the servant had not produced
anything. The rich man expressed his impatience, but the servant replied,
"Please wait, I'm cooking." The rich man waited, but it got later and later
and no food was brought. When he demanded from the servant, the servant
only replied, "I'm cooking. It's going to be ready soon." Finally the rich
man became angry and walked into the kitchen. "What is this cooking?" he
demanded. And there he saw that the servant had a very strange arrangement
for cooking. He had a very small fire on the ground and a tall bamboo tripod
to hold the pot he was supposed to heat high by the ceiling. Obviously
the small flame would never be able to reach the pot to heat it.
"What do you think you're doing?" demanded the
rich man.
"Well," said the servant, "if you claim that
the yogi was keeping warm in the water by that light, then I am also cooking."
The man could understand that his servant was dissatisfied with the outcome
of his wager with the yogi. And so he went and paid the yogi the wager.
When Prabhupada told this story, the devotees
kept waiting for a punch line or a further conclusion. It didn't seem very
obvious. Then Prabhupada explained it.
"If you want to cook, then you have to cook according
to the method. You may have a pot and you may have a flame, but if you
don't cook according to the method, then you'll never get the food. It
will never work. So he may be chanting Hare Krsna", and now Prabhupada
looked to his fallen sannyasi disciple, "but if you're not following the
process, then what good is your chanting? If you want to get the result,
you have to follow the method."

Prabhupada:
visnu-saktih para prokta
ksetrajnakhya tatha para
avidya-karma-samjna anya
trtiya saktir isyate
[Cc. Madhya 6.154]
So we were discussing other night about the three principal energies of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. There are multi-energies. Parasya saktir vividhaiva sruyate svabhaviki jnana-bala-kriya ca [Cc. Madhya 13.65, purport]. From sruti we understand that the Supreme Lord is full of potencies. Even we are. We are a small particle of the Supreme Lord; still, we are full of potencies. Just like you shave today, and tomorrow morning, by your own potency, the hairs again grown. We see actually things are happening. How it is happening, that we do not know, even in our body. But it is a fact it is happening. Things are happening. That means due to my potency. As soon as I leave this body there will be no more hair growth. The potency is gone. So as we are a small particle, mamaivamso jiva-bhutah... [Bg. 15.7]. Jiva, the living entity is a very small particle, one ten-thousandth part of the top point of hair. Kesagra-sata-bhagasya satadha kalpitasya ca [Cc. Madhya 19.140]. So such a small particle, atomic particle of the Supreme Lord, has got so much potencies. We see different varieties of life, different intelligence all over the world. What is that? Potency. So if we have got so much potencies, just imagine what Krsna, the Supreme Person, has got, potency.
So He has got potency. He is not nih sakti. He has got sakti. Parasya saktir vividhaiva sruyate svabhaviki jnana... [Cc. Madhya 13.65, purport]. Everything is happening on account of His potency. Just like in your body so many things are happening on account of potency, similarly, the gigantic universal form of the Lord -- His potencies are working. Everything is happening. The tree is coming out, the fruit is coming out, the flower is coming, the color is painted -- everything. Svabhaviki jnana-bala-kriya ca. Na tasya karyam karanam ca vidyate. He hasn't got to do anything personally, but His potencies are acting. Na tasya karyam karanam ca vidyate. Na tat-samas cabhyadhikas ca drsyate. Nobody can be equal to Him or greater than Him. Sama. Asama urdhva. In the Bhagavad-gita it is explained that Krsna is asama urdhva. Nobody is greater than Him, and nobody is equal to Him. So anyone who is claiming equal to Him, they are less intelligent. They have no intelligence. Asama urdhva. Na tasya samah. Nobody is equal to Him, neither urdhva. Krsna says, mattah parataram nanyat: [Bg. 7.7] "Nobody is greater than Me." Therefore God is great. If somebody is equal to Him or greater than Him, then he is not God. God is Krsna.
isvarah paramah krsnah

He is the original cause of everything. So he has got... He is working the whole cosmic manifestation is exhibited by His potency. That is described here: visnu-saktih para prokta [Cc. Madhya 6.154]. That is spiritual potency.

By the sacrifice of the congregational chanting of the holy name, I worship the deliverer of the living entities of Kali-yuga, Sri Gaurangadeva, who constantly sings the name of Krsna. Although His complexion is not blackish, He is Krsna Himself. He is accompanied by His angas (bodily limbs in the form of Nityananda and Advaita Prabhu), upangas (parts of limbs like Srivasa Pandita), astra (weapon in the form of the holy name), and parsada (associates like Svarupa Damodara, Raya Ramananda, Gadadhara, and Govinda). When will the son of Sacimata appear within the path of my eyes? He has accepted the Gaudiya Vaisnavas, who are like bees at His lotus feet, as His personal associates. Like a father, He gave them instructions to chant the Hare Krsna maha-mantra counting a fixed number of rounds. The Supreme Absolute Truth, Sri Hari, has manifested His golden form in Navadvipa to deliver the living entities of Kali-yuga. Along with His associates, He has given the treasure of love of God by introducing the chanting of the holy names of the Lord the religious practice for the age of Kali. Congregational chanting of the holy names of the Lord is an eternal activity of the living entity.
Shikshastaka (1):
ceto-darpana-marjanam bhava-maha-davagni-nirvapanam
sreyah-kairava-candrika-vitaranam vidya-vadhu-jivanam
anandambudhi-vardhanam prati-padam purnamrtasvadanam
sarvatma-snapanam param vijayate sri-krsna-sankirtanam
(11)
Glories to the Sri Krsna sankirtana, which cleanses the heart of all the dust accumulated for years together. Thus the fire of conditioned life, of repeated birth and death is extinguished. This sankirtana movement is the waxing moon that spreads the white lotus of good fortune for all living entities. It is the life of all transcendental knowledge, it increases the ocean of transcendental bliss, and it helps to have a taste of the full nectar for which we are always anxious. By performing congregational chanting of the Hare Krsna mantra, one can destroy the sinful condition of material existence, purify the unclean heart, and awaken all varieties of devotional service. The result of chanting is that one awakens his love for Krsna and tastes transcendental bliss. Ultimately, one attains the association of Krsna and engages in His devotional service, as if immersing himself in a great ocean of love.

Jain monks have compassion to all beings; avoid what is
sinful; abstain from food especially prepared or them; abstain from
wicked deeds and from injuring living beings.
Maxim of the Monks (Jainism)
With the three means of punishment, words, thoughts and
acts, ye shall not injure living things.
Jaina Sutras (Jainism)
He who harms animals has not understood or renounced deeds
of sin ... Those whose minds are at peace and who are free
from passions do not desire to live at the expense of
others.
Acharanga Sutra (Jainism)
All beings hate pains; therefore one should not kill them.
This is the quintessence of wisdom: not to kill anything.
Sutrakritanga (Jainism)
Viler than unbelievers are those cruel ones who make the
law that teaches killing.
Yogashastra (Jainism)
Beings which kill others should not be killed in the belief
that the destruction of one of them leads to the protection of many others.
Purushartha Siddhyupaya (Jainism)
Gambling, eating meat, wine-bibbing, adultery, hunting,
thieving, debauchery - these seven things in this world lead to the hells.
Sanskrit Shloka (Jainism)
Propagate the religion which is a blessing to all creatures
in the world.
Acharanga Sutra (Jainism)
In this world of misery, disease, old age, and death,
there is no other protection, refuge or help than our own practise of the
truth. Others are powerless; as we sow we reap.
Quoted by Warren in 'Jainism'
Peace comes from within. Do not seek it without.
Buddha (B.C. 568-488)
True happiness consists in making happy.
Bharavi's Kiratarjuniya (Hindu)
Truth, self control, asceticism, generosity, non-injury,
constancy in virtue - these are the means of success, not caste or family.
Mahabharata (Hindu)
Let him not destroy, or cause to be destroyed, any life
at all, nor sanction the acts of those who do so. Let him refrain from
even hurting any creature, both those that are strong and those that tremble
in the world.
Suita-Nipata (Buddhist)
One act of pure love in saving life is greater than spending
the whole of one's time in religious offerings to the gods ...
Dhammapada (Buddhist)
He who, seeking his own happiness, punishes or kills beings
who also long for happiness, will not find happiness after his death.
Dhammapada (Buddhist)
The ways are two: love and want of love. That is all.
Menchius (?732-?289 BC) (Confucian)
This is the sum of duty: do naught to others which if
done to thee, would cause thee pain.
Mahabharata (Hindu)
When a man has pity on all living creatures then only
is he noble.
Buddha (563? - 483? B.C.)
Hurt not others with that which pains yourself.
Udanavarga (Buddhist)
Srimad Bhagavatam (3.5.40):
dhatar yad asmin bhava isa jivas tapa-trayenabhihata na
sarma
atman labhante bhagavams tavanghri- cchayam sa-vidyam
ata asrayema (20)
O Father! O Lord! O Personality of Godhead! The living entities in the material world can never have any happiness because they are overwhelmed by the three kinds of miseries. Therefore they take shelter of the shade of Your lotus feet, which are full of knowledge, and we also thus take shelter of them.
Srimad Bhagavatam (8.3.20):
ekantino yasya na kancanartham
vanchanti ye vai bhagavat-prapannah
aty-adbhutam tac-caritam sumangalam
gayanta ananda-samudra-magnah (22)
Unalloyed devotees, who have no desire other than to serve the Lord, worship Him in full surrender and always hear and chant about His activities, which are most wonderful and auspicious. Thus they always merge in an ocean of transcendental bliss. Such devotees never ask the Lord for any benediction.

The Vedas describe the truth of the holy name in these words, from the Rg-veda:
om ity etad brahmano nedistam nama yasmad uccaryamana
eva samsara-bhayat tarayati tasmad-ucyate tara iti (27)
om asya jananto nama cid-viviktan mahaste visno
sumatim bhajamahe om tat sat (28)
tato 'bhut trivrd-omkaro yo 'vyakta prabhavah svarat
yat tal-lingam bhagavato brahmanah paramatmanah (29)
One who chants om, which is the closest form of Brahman, approaches Brahman. This name liberates one from the fear of the material world, therefore it is known as tarak brahma. O Visnu, your self-manifest name, om, is the eternal form of cognizance. Even if my knowledge about the glories of reciting this name is incomplete, still, by the practice of reciting this name I will achieve that perfect knowledge. He who has unmanifested potencies and is fully independent, manifests the vibration omkara, which indicates Himself. Brahman, Paramatma, and Bhagavan are the three forms He manifests.
The three letters comprising omkara a, u, m specifically represent the three names Hari, Krsna, and Rama respectively. The name Hari is nondifferent from Hari Himself. His eternal form, svarupa, is known as vacya, and the transcendental name of Hari is known as vacaka. These two forms, vachya and vachaka, fulfill all kinds of desires. Therefore in the Chaitanya-bhagavat it is stated:
hare krsna hare krsna krsna krsna hare hare hare rama hare rama rama rama hare hare (30)
Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu said, “While counting the number, all of you chant this maha-mantra which I have given you. Everyone will achieve all perfection from this chanting. No other rules and regulations are there, except that one should always chant”
pratisthasa dhrsta svapacaramani me hrdi natet
katham sadhu-prema sprsati sucir-etan-nanu manah
sada tvam sevasva prabhu-dayita-samanta-matulam
yatha tam niskasya tvaritam iha tam vesayati sah (21)
O mind, you are like a shameless, low-born prostitute who eats dog meat and is flagrantly dancing in my heart in the form of desire for fame. How then can pure love of Krsna ever find a place in my heart? Just serve the devotees of Krsna, who are His dear unparalleled commanders, so they can drive out this prostitute and enthrone pure love within my heart.
Manah-siksa (7):
Quotes by famous persons on
vegetarianiism over time
"A human can be healthy without killing animals for food. Therefore
if he eats meat he participates in taking animal life merely for the sake
of his appetite."
- Leo Tolstoy
"The soul is the same in all living creatures, although the body of
each is different"
Hippocrates
Alas, what wickedness to swallow flesh into our own flesh, to fatten
our greedy bodies by cramming in other bodies, to have one living creature
fed by the flesh of another.
- Pythagoras
"Nothing will benefit human health and increase chances for survival
of life on earth as much as the evolution to a vegetarian diet"
-Albert Einstein
"In all the round world of utopia there is no meat. There used to be.
But now we cannot stand the thought of slaughterhouses. And in a population
that is all educated and at about the same level of physical refinement,
it is practically impossible to find anyone who will hew a dead ox or pig.
We never settled the hygienic aspect of meat-eating at all. This other
aspect decided us. I can still remember as a boy the rejoicings over the
closing of the last slaughterhouse."
H.G.Wells - A MODERN UTOPIA
"To be a vegetarian is to disagree -- to disagree with the course
of things today. Starvation, world hunger, cruelty, waste, wars --
we must make a statement about these things. Vegetarianism is my statement.
And I think it is a good one."
~Isaac Bashevis Singer
"Animals are my friends and I don't eat my friends"
- George Bernard Shaw
"If a slaughterhouse had glass walls, everyone would be a vegetarian.
We feel better about ourselves and better about the animals, knowing we're
not contributing to their pain."
- Paul and Linda McCartney
"If we live in peace and love, we will not kill our fellow creatures
for any reason, even to obtain food. There is no need to do so when
other foods are available to us that are both healthful and delicious."
- Peter Max
"We must be reminded that each morning as dawn breaks, millions upon
millions of animals are slaughtered for food in town and village the world
over: death on produciton lines, death en mass, industrial death; they
see it, smell it, they know its coming. Niether their sight nor their
instincts deceive them. They know."
- Brigitte Bardot
"We patronize them for their incompleteness, for their tragic fate of
having taken form so far below ourselves. And therein we err, and greatly
err. For the animal shall not be measured by man. In a world older and
more complete than ours they move finished and complete, gifted with extensions
of the senses we have lost or never attained, living by voices we shall
never hear. They are not brethren, they are not underlings; they are other
nations, caught with ourselves in the net of life and time, fellow prisoners
of the splendour and travail of the earth."
- Henry Beston, circa 1925
One of the most dangerous things that can happen to a child is to kill
or torture an animal and get away with it.
- Anthropologist Margaret Mead

"IN EVERY TOWN AND VILLAGE the chanting of the Holy Name of Krishna shall be heard. This was the forecast made by Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu almost 500 years ago in India. Today, as the Hare Krishna Mantra -- Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare, Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare -- resounds in Bombay and New York, Nairobi and Sydney, and in Paris and Hong Kong, the prophecy of Lord Caitanya stands fulfilled. The universal import of this "Samkirtan Movement" (the congregational chanting of the Holy Names of the Lord) was expressed by Lord Caitanya as follows:
"Glory to the Sri Krishna Samkirtan which cleanses the heart of all the dust accumulated for years together. Thus the fire of conditional life, of repeated birth and death, is extinguished. The Samkirtan Movement is the prime benediction for humanity at large because it spreads the rays of the benediction Moon. It is the life of all transcendental knowledge, it increases the ocean of transcendental bliss, and it helps us to have a taste of the full nectar for which we are always anxious."

Agama Tantra and the Vaishnava Samskaras as a way of life:
Recently I was asked, "Don't you find it an inconvenience to always be checking to see when is the right time to do this or the best time for that?"
In simple terms my answer was and still is; if you go to the bus or railway station or airport it is probably an intelligent venture to enquire about the times and routes of vehicles than to just hope that one will be along soon, or one is going in your direction.
There are subtle influences in the Universe that, for thousands of years gone by, advanced cultures have honoured, respected and utilised. Before the corruption of the Vedik literatures by the Christian and Moslem invaders to India all these things were used; Ayurvedik Medicine; Vedik Astrology; etc. Today there's a rennaisance among many to revive these arts.
We have been trained and studied to be able to provide these services. See some of my sites:

"The religious principles taught by Mohammed and Jesus Christ are similar to the religious principles taught by Vaishnava sects. Buddhism and Jainism are similar to Saiva-dharma. This is scientific consideration of truths regarding religious principles. Those who consider their own religious principles as real dharma and others religious principles as irreligion or subreligion are unable to ascertain the truth due to being influenced by prejudice. Actually religious principles followed by people in general are different only due to the different qualifications of the practitioners, but the constitutional religious principles of all living entities are one." World Vegetarian Awareness Month
- October
http://www.hknet.org.nz/VegeWVD.html
Visit our main page Vegetarianism & Beyond http://turn.to/Vegetarianism
Dear Fellow Vegetarians,
As you'd know WVD is very close and in these troubled times I'd like to
invite you all to share with us a mood of mutual co-operation in getting
our message across to the world. For those who are not vegetarian it is
an opportune time for us to reach them especially given the present climate.
In the words of George Bernard Shaw:
Elephant an blined men story put in the form of a poem to decribe how different religious seekers try to find God
Sanitarium Research Results 2001
http://www.ivu.org/nzvs/info/stats.htm
To mark World Vegetarian Day this year the Sanitarium Nutrition Education
Service researched* New Zealanders' attitudes to vegetarian meals and our
non-meat eating habits. Some of the results are highlighted below:
Compared to 5 years ago about a quarter of New Zealanders (25%) eat
more meals without meat (red meat, poultry and fish), and just over half
(55%) are eating the same amount.
Around a quarter (25%) of New Zealanders eat meals both with and without
meat on an equal basis.
It appears that singles like their meatless meals, as a quarter of
this group often or only ever eat meals without meat (compared to the 17%
population average)
The myth that vegetarian food is boring was refuted by New Zealand
consumers, 46% said they totally disagree with this statement.
Around 1/5th of New Zealanders expressed a preference for eating meals
without meat (21%); with females more likely to express a preference for
meatless meals (this includes those who currently include meat in their
diet)
Nearly 50% of meat-eating New Zealanders had between one and three
meals which excluded red meat, poultry or fish in the last seven days (before
the survey)
Amongst those who eat meat, 15% actually prefer meals without red meat,
poultry or fish. A further 7% of meat eaters also prefer meatless meals,
but do include poultry and/or fish in their diet.
Top New Zealand chefs agree that the demand for vegetarian dishes has
quadrupled over the last five years.
This trend is confirmed by research undertaken by ACNielsen* which
indicates that, compared to five years ago, over a quarter of New Zealanders
(26%) aged 15 years and over eat more meals without meat.
Head Chef at MJs in Auckland, Michael James, has seen a marked increase
in the number of vegetarian meal requests.
"Over the last five years vegetarian requests have tripled and to match
that we have increased the vegetarian options available on our menu", he
says. "I think people are choosing vegetables over meat as they see the
vegetarian option as a health conscious move."
Chefs throughout the country were questioned regarding their changing
menus, including Michael James of MJs in Auckland, Adrian Woodhouse of
Braisserie Flip in Wellington, Jason Robinson of Annies Wine Bar in Christchurch
and Michael Coughlin of Bell Pepper Blue Restaurant in Dunedin.
The research also indicated that 17% of the 15 years plus population
often eats, or only ever eats meals without meat. Of those surveyed, 46%
stated that meals without meat are not boring.
Kim Stirling, Sanitarium's Nutrition Education Service Manager, says
that this research suggests New Zealanders are becoming more conscious
of their health and well being. "There is plenty of evidence that eating
more plant food can offer significant health benefits," she says.
A balanced, healthy diet based on a variety of plant foods such as
whole grains, nuts and seeds, fruits and vegetables and legumes is important
for everyone following a vegetarian diet.
*Research was conducted by ACNeilsen between September 5 and 11, 2001
ANDHRA PRADESH, INDIA, September 30, 2004: Kanchi Sankaracharya Jayendra Saraswathi will present a 11.5-kg gold crown to the hill shrine of Lord Venkateswara on Thursday. The Sankaracharya and his junior acharya, Vijendra Saraswathi, will hand over the crown, worth about US$340,000, to Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Dr Y S Rajasekhara Reddy in the temple. Temple sources said the Deity would be adorned with the crown, studded with diamonds and other precious stones, after an abhishekam [ceremonial bath].

Never forget Gaura who is more merciful and benevolent than Krsna. Krsna
is like a just ruler who takes into account your offences in his administration
of justice . Gaura does not take into account your offences. Whereas, Krsna
is more interested in the dispensation of justice, Gaura is more interested
in the distribution of mercy.
From this point of view, Gaura- Kirtan is more useful than Krsna -
Kirtan. Gaura Kirtamn means : Sri Krsna Caitanya, Prabhu Nityananda, Sri
Advaita, Gadadhara, Srivasidi, Gaura Bhakta Vrnda. Krsna is the Avatara
of Dvapara- Yuga. Gaura is the Kali yuga avatara. We should sing the name
and glories of the avatara in whose age we live; just as in a kingdom we
praise the ruling king." Jai Sacinandana Gaura Hari, Jaya Sacinandana Gaura

TRENTON, New Jersey (AP) -- Which is more harmful to your health -- a smoky bar or a city street filled with diesel truck fumes? Well, you might want to skip your next happy hour.
Smoky bars and casinos have up to 50 times more cancer-causing particles in the air than highways and city streets clogged with diesel trucks at rush hour, according to a study that also shows indoor air pollution virtually disappears once smoking is banned.
Conducted by the researcher who first showed secondhand smoke causes thousands of U.S. lung cancer deaths each year, the study found casino and bar workers are exposed to particulate pollution at far greater levels than the government allows outdoors.
"This paper will help localities pass smoking bans," predicted the author, James Repace, a biophysicist who works as a secondhand-smoke consultant after spending 30 years as a federal researcher. "It shows how beneficial smoking bans are for hospitality workers and patrons."
Repace tested air in a casino, a pool hall and six taverns in Delaware in November 2002 and in January 2003, two months after the state imposed a strict indoor smoking ban.
His detectors measured two substances blamed for tobacco-related cancers: a group of chemicals called particulate polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, or PPAHs, and respirable particles -- airborne soot small enough to penetrate the lungs.
"They are the most dangerous" substances in secondhand smoke, said Repace, a visiting assistant clinical professor at Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston.
Repace said his research also showed that ventilation systems -- sometimes touted by tavern, restaurant and casino groups as an alternative to smoking bans -- cannot exchange air fast enough to keep up with the smoke.
The study, published in the September issue of the Journal of Occupational
and Environmental Medicine, was partly funded by the nation's largest philanthropic
organization devoted to health care, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation
of Plainsboro, New Jersey.
Health benefits of smoking bans
Repace found an average level of respirable particles of 231 micrograms, or millionths of a gram, per cubic meter of air in the eight nightspots in Delaware. That is 15 times the 15-microgram Environmental Protection Agency limit for outdoor air, and 49 times the rush-hour average on Interstate 95 in Wilmington. It even tops the 199-microgram rush-hour level at the Baltimore Harbor Tunnel tollbooths.

Temple Worship Integrates Cultures of North and South
India
http://www.telegraphindia.com/1040826/asp/calcutta/story_3669036.asp
CALCUTTA, INDIA, August 26, 2004: A priest in a dhoti greets you at the entrance of Sri Ganesh and Sri Murugan Kovil (Temple). The hospitable fragrance of camphor, coconut oil and flowers makes the visitor feel transported to a remote village in South India. The near half-million South Indians in Calcutta have enriched the country's cultural capital and have themselves become bona fide Bengalis. The city now has six South Indian temples - Sri Ganesh and Sri Murugan Temple, Sree Guruvayurappan Samajam, Rama Mandir, Veda Bhavan, Shastha Samooham and Shankara Institute of Philosophy. T. S. Srinivasan of the Ganesha and Murugan Temple trust says South Indians are proud to be associated with the city. "We are more Bengali than South Indian. But we've maintained our identity. Local residents, Bengalis, Marwaris and Jains, have recognized our efforts and are helping us run the temples." T. Ranganathan adds that the Gurvayurappan Samajam - built on the lines of the main temple in Kerala - is visited every day by devotees from all communities. The temples mainly belong to two denominations - Shakta and the Vaishnav. Priests - Shantis from Kerala and Gurukal from Tamil Nadu - perform the abishekham and pujas before the traditional South Indian deities. There are nearly 300 visitors daily and more than a thousand devotees on festival days. Temple trusts also contribute to social causes. Priest Meenakshi Sundaram Gurukkal said: "I have fallen in love with the city and its people. Though I cannot communicate with all of them, as I do not know any language apart from Tamil, I feel at home and have realized that Bengalis and Tamils share similar values and are rich in culture."

Any agriculturalist will tell the earth can produce enough food to feed ten times the present human population. Yet political intrigues and wars, unfair distribution of land, the production of cash crops like tobacco, tea, and coffee instead of food, and erosion due to misuse ensure that millions go hungry, even in wealthy countries like the United States.
According to information compiled by the United States Department of Agriculture, over ninety percent of all the grain produced in America is used for feeding live stock -- cows. pigs, lambs and chickens -- that wind up on dinner tables.
The process of using grain to produce meat is incredibly wasteful. Information from the USDA's Economic Research Service shows that only one pound of beef is produced for every sixteen pounds of grain consumed.
In his book "Proteins:Their Chemistry and Politics," Dr. Aaron Altshul notes that, "In terms of calorie units per acre, a diet of grains, vegetables and beans will support twenty times more people than a diet of meat.
If the earth's arable land were used primarily for the production of vegetarian foods, the planet could easily support a population of twenty billion and more.
In a report submitted to the United Nations World Food Conference (Rome, 1974), Rene Durmont, an agricultural economist at France's National Agricultural Institute, made this judgement , "The over consumption of meat by the rich means hunger for the poor."

Pakistan Government to Renovate Krishna Temple in Lahore
http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/articleshow/868899.cms
LAHORE, PAKISTAN, September 30, 2004: Lahore's famous Krishna Mandir is getting set for a makeover with Hindu festivals of Dussehra and Diwali around the corner. According to the Daily Times, the Evacuee Trust Property Board (ETPB) of Pakistan has announced plans to spend US$21,000 on the temple's renovation next month. Faraz Abbas, the administrator of the ETPB, was quoted as saying that the temple and other Hindu edifices had been badly damaged in communal clashes in the aftermath of the demolition of the Babri Masjid in Ayodhya in December 1992. Now a thought was being given to renovate them as Hindus had been demanding a proper place for worship and prayer, he added. Abbas claimed that it had renovated the temple several times after partition and a number of proposals had been sent to the higher authorities for the renovation of other temples for the minorities in the province.
HPI adds: According to the website of Human Rights Without Frontiers, Int., http://www.hrwf.net/html/pakistan_2004.html, The Evacuee Trust Property Board is a government body of the minorities affairs ministry that is supposed to look after properties abandoned by fleeing Sikhs and Hindus when the Indian sub-continent was partitioned in 1947.

Donkey in the well
A parable about life.
One day a farmer's donkey fell down into a well. The animal cried piteously for hours as the farmer tried to figure out what to do. Finally he decided the animal was old, and that the well needed to be covered anyway and that it just wasn't worth retrieving the donkey. So he invited all his neighbours to come over and help him.
They all grabbed a shovel and began to shovel dirt into the well. At first, the donkey realized what was happening and cried horribly. Then, to everyone's amazement, he quietened down. A few shovel loads later, the farmer finally looked down the well and was astonished at what he saw. With every shovel of dirt that hit his back, the donkey was doing something amazing. He would shake it off and take a step up. As the farmer's neighbours continued to shovel dirt on top of the animal, he would shake it off and take a step up. Pretty soon, everyone was amazed as the donkey stepped up over the edge of the well and trotted off!
Life is going to shovel dirt on you, all kinds of dirt. The trick to getting out of the well is to shake it off and take a step up.
